Cool Guides

And why not chew it off? Is it like in church where you're not supposed to nibble your consecrated wafer?

I agree with the other things, though. And I feel like I'm supposed to repost the old "The Japanese Tradition" video on sushi: https://youtube.com/watch?v=bDL8yu34fz0 It's awesome. (And since satire doesn't always translate on the internet: It's a spoof.)

ggppjj ,

I want to say it's some reason a long the lines of "it was masterfully creafted in such a way that the only best experience is to eat the whole thing at once, and to do otherwise is to insinuate a lack of respect", with the disclaimer that I don't actually know if that's what it is.

h3ndrik ,

I think a good display of respect and that you enjoyed something, is to finish your plate. But that doesn't mean you got to swallow everything at once?!

ggppjj ,

As I understand it, sushi in this context is specifically made to be a single bite.

h3ndrik ,

You're probably right. I think the form factor is mainly due to sushi being finger food. And Japanese people seem to like bite-sized food anyways. I mean they don't hand you a knife in the first place so there wouldn't be any way to cut your food even if you wanted.

I'm not an expert on sushi either. And I wonder if it really has a long tradition of how it's supposed to be done. I suppose what we deem authentic are relatively new inventions. Like conveyor-belt restaurants aren't from the 18hundreds. And they certainly didn't eat raw salmon before refrigerators were invented.

Yeah I was confused by that part, too. I have always eaten sushi in a few bites. Maybe I'm a big pale skinned dickhead.

jacksilver ,

When getting sushi in the US it's not uncommon to get, at least in my opinion, non bite sized pieces. Like the super deluxe roll with 15 things in it isn't going to be bite sized. However, I don't believe that's typical when getting sushi in Japan.

Malgas ,

Sushi is supposed to be bite-sized. In my experience this is not always the case in practice, but the idea is that you should just pop the whole thing in your mouth.

TootSweet ,

And why not chew it off?

Last time I had sushi (about a week ago), I tried a place I'd never tried before. I ordered some sashimi and they were huge. If I'd eaten those in one bite each, it would have been like that game "chubby bunny". But then again I don't really know how authentic this particular sushi place was. Tasted great, though.

10_0 ,

Don't chew it off because the rice will go everywhere. But if you've got a plate then your fine.

Hugh_Jeggs ,

Then your fine is what? How much?? I demand to know

blindsight , in A Cool Guide Comparing US Letter and A4 Paper Sizes

The biggest advantage of A4 isn't explained clearly: since it follows √2 ratios, you can reduce by half and get it to fit exactly 2 pages of information on 1 sheet, so you can make any document into a 2-per-page booklet with perfect formatting.

If you try to print 2 pages per page with US Letter, you get massive waste and it looks terrible.

RalphWolf , in A Cool Guide Comparing US Letter and A4 Paper Sizes

I would like to change to A4 paper, but in Canada? Good luck even finding it. Staples carries 1 SKU and at $28 for 500 seets it's 4x the price of other paper.

Magnetar , in A Cool Guide Comparing US Letter and A4 Paper Sizes

I never would have believed Canada to be on the dark side of paper formats.

MadMadBunny ,

It sucks, trust me…

The Americans haven’t been alright since pirates captured the reference kilogram on its way to the newly independent USA from France, and they sour-grapesed themselves into making wilful archaisms part of their identity.

Saying a Jihad just means "Struggle" is like saying a Crusade is just an expedition of people marked by the cross.

Like, sure, if only translate it literally and you ignore all the historical context.

saigot ,

I mean not really. Greater jihad is a fully inner struggle to be a good person. Lesser jihad is about converting others, the lesser jihad of the pen/tongue is about debate and proselytizing, onky jihad of the sword is about violence and only those in active combat. For all Muslims the greater jihad is the most important part, and for 95% of Muslims the jihad of the pen is the only relavent part. In the Qur'an there are roughly 30 references to greater jihad, and 10 or so for the lesser jihad.

And most Christian Crusades are about making gay people scared, not conquering Jerusalem

So, fun fact, this is lifted directly (except with shittier graphics and formatting and also what I think are the remnants of OCR or autocorrect mistakes that didn’t get fixed, which is kind of hilarious - for instance, the middle square should be “Wording this is hard,” not “Working this is hard”) from Dani Donovan’s Anti-Planner: How to Get Sh*t Done When You Don’t Feel Like It, an amazing resource for people with ADHD. (Highly recommend, by the way, even though it was kinda pricy.) It was meant as a guide for anxious, dysregulated people who severely struggle with writing these types of emails and communications. It’s not quite the investment bro bullshit I think a lot of people here seem to think.

I mean, whether it has value in itself is up to the beholder. I just wanted to give credit to the actual creator and provide a little context.

The A series is better because it divides easily into smaller sizes, shows more on phones, and portrait monitors.

I like my A sheets, but no paper format is good on screen, it's a whole different medium.

SOME species are doing well. But we should remember we’re in a pretty massive extinction event, and these are outliers.

I mean, sure. There are animals that went extinct (and that did so in North America and over a century ago; it wouldn't have been in this list anyway).

But this is saying that from ~1960, a lot of European animal populations have increased.

I have a friend I help with her start up and occasionally she starts that shit with me. I have zero patience for boss speak and my labor is free so I just tell her off.

Just because in your head you RP as a boss doesn't mean I'm going to do a meeting instead of an email, and a little friendly, humble speech goes a long way vs. whatever the fuck these rude ass emails are.

I do not take people who use corporate and "boss" jargon seriously at all. Like, ever. Just talk to me like a goddamn person please.

kralk , in A cool guide on emailing like a boss

If I get an email that says "it's easier to discuss in person" I am DEFINITELY writing that shit down.

Brickardo , in A cool guide on emailing like a boss

Why does this feel so wrong?

Phil_in_here ,

Because so much of that would put you off if you were on the receiving end.

As a human person, when a human person is on the other end, I do my best to be kind, empathetic, forgiving, and accommodating.

When some asshole wants to try and swing his dick around in an email, my instinct is "fuck that guy"

Sanguine , in A cool guide on emailing like a boss

This fucking garbage again. Just be genuine, you dont need to find some optimal way to flex / power game in emails.
