metaphortune , in Have a good week-end everyone!

Anyone else going and watching soccer/football this weekend?? Hoping my beloved Pittsburgh Riverhounds can beat Tampa Bay Rowdies to snap a 3-game winless streak to start the season.

wjrii ,

Nothing this week, but we have tickets for USA-Bolivia at Jerryworld this summer. Might try to find a stream of the FCD game tomorrow though, even though they're also starting the season like stale ass.

metaphortune ,

Oooh, Copa America! Nice, hope that's a good time.
FC Dallas has been puzzling, that's for sure. I bought into the hype, I thought they'd take a positive step forward from last year's mild success... nope :(

wjrii ,

Yeah, with Ferreira and Pomykal still here, and supposedly some spending (though god knows if the Hunts even remember they own the soccer team back in their hometown), things should be better, but it's a long season and yay playoff system, I guess. This Apple TV thing has made it so much more tedious to try to catch them. Even if I were paying, tfor me the intensity of the MLS regular season is closer to the NHL or NBA than NFL or CFB, so I tend to watch upon running across it, rather than hunting for each game. Then the whole league did the USOC dirty, but I gather FCD made a point of being one of the entrants, as it would look awfully bad for them not to be in the LAMAR HUNT US Open Cup.

metaphortune ,

If Pomykal can avoid major injuries for a while it's over for everyone else, as they say... For me, I like the regular season and therefore I LOVE the AppleTV deal. I'm originally from Columbus (woo lamar hunt!) and basically being unable to watch games without paying for cable was terrible. Now I can watch every game and see the MLS360 whiparound show which is fun.
But yeah, the USOC change is shameful, I hate it so much. I hope FCD make a good run in it this year, at least! If the Riverhounds and the Crew can't/won't win it, certainly wouldn't mind it being Dallas.

RizzRustbolt , in Have a good week-end everyone!

You're not the boss of me!

But the position is open.

BonesOfTheMoon , in Have a good week-end everyone!

Same to you! Be careful out there everyone, I have a lovely case of bronchitis despite being the last person masking in my city. Ugh.

Krudler , in What's a piece of advice you've received that has stuck with you?

My grandfather continually underscored to me that no matter what you try to do, even if it is a failure so to speak, you have learned. And you can carry what you've learned into your next effort, and be that much more strong and powerful. There is no shame in trying to invent something and discover that you are wrong, or start a business and not have it succeed, or try to approach something in a novel way and have it fall flat. That is the essence of how we learn and discover and grow.

Furthermore he taught me that you need to let people show you how to do things that you already know how to do. Everybody out there has a piece of priceless gold that they're just willing to hand to you, and all you have to do is be willing to listen. And accept that while we may know how to do something, there's always a better way.

I remember one time way back in high school some kids were making fun of some other kids for liking something, can't remember what it was. Teacher overhead what happened and stopped it, and told us: Imagine how boring the world would be, if everyone liked the same stuff. This one has always stuck with me.

Watch old popular programs and shows from the past.

There's a reason why some shows went on for seven, eight or nine years ... people liked them and the productions were well done because they had to be back then.

Nowadays, it's far too easy to slap together a formulaic show or movie pump it out with a low budget and send it out. It's good in one way because it gets writers, producers, actors and directors to do work they never could have done in the past but it also means there is less pressure to make something great. Twenty, or thirty years ago and more, a production had to be really well done because it was way more expensive, involved a lot more people and there was far more risks for everybody. Doesn't mean they always produced great stuff but due to the circumstances, there was more pressure to make great content.

At this point in media ... you can take your time watching what's new and if you ever feel like there's nothing to watch .... there's decades of great content from the past that will suit anyone.

stoy , in Is there anything on tv that isnt sex and violence

Yep, there is a lot of stuff.

Obviously this is a dependent on what media you have access to.

I am going to define your requirenments for TV rather loosely and include Youtube as well.

So here are some of the shows I find quite wholesome and nice.

Michael Palin's travel shows like

Pole To Pole with Michael Palin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_to_Pole_with_Michael_Palin - Very interesting documentary as he visits the Societ Union just days before it fell without realizing it.

Full circle with Michael Palin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Circle_with_Michael_Palin

Michael Palin's New Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Palin's_New_Europe

There are plenty more to watch from his travel documentaries, these three are just the ones I have watched and enjoyed.

They can be found on dailymotion, though some episodes might be missing.

I am a Swede, and unless you know Swedish, the next one might be slightly difficult to fully understand, since they speak a fair bit of Swedish in it, but most of what it said is in English.

Allt för Sverige - Ten Americans come to Sweden to explore their Swedish herritage and, if they win rhe competition, get to meet their Swedish family: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allt_f%C3%B6r_Sverige - this also exists on Dailymotion, all eleven seasons can befound there, I tend to skip the competition parts and just watch as the Americans get to visit Sweden and experience the place they have dreamt a lot about.

The following YT channels are great for slow, well made content without sex and violence:

Bigclivedotcom - https://youtube.com/@bigclivedotcom - a lovely man reverse engineering crappy electronics from ebay and experiementing with spirits to see if they carbonate or if they can be distilled and what end result tastes like.

Brick Experiment Channel - https://youtube.com/@BrickExperimentChannel - do you like Lego? Do you like Lego being built into working drones, submarines and other clever stuff without a commenter talking over the action? This is the place for you, and absolue gem of a channel.

Calum - https://youtube.com/@CalumRaasay - A channel full of very well produced videos, there a everything about documentaries about the jerrycan, WWII rescue bouys, WV Beetles at the south pole, old arieal navigation aids, shipping containers, flying RVs and much more to video essays about how good the Suzuki Jimny and Super Carry are to videos about how terrible Rhododendron are.

Jet Lag: The Game - https://youtube.com/@jetlagthegame - A really cool channel where they turn the world into a boardgame, they have played connect five across America, played tag across europe, played capture the flag across Tokyo, played hide snd seek across Switzerland and more, very fun and nice.

Our own devices - https://youtube.com/@CanadianMacGyver - A Canadian man talking about odd things in his collection, this range from gas masks to disc cameras, from signaling lamps to emergency radios, form polaroid cameras to fire fighting granades, from WWII clickers to soda syphons, and much more.

Peter Dibble - https://youtube.com/@peterdibble - Do you want to learn about the bus that got turned into an arieal tramway, Lego's lost architectual cosin, Americas christmas monorails, that time when Amtrack borrowed a Swedish and German highspeed train and had them run in commercial service and go on a tour of the US, the first barcode, and more, this is the place for you.

RetroBytes - https://youtube.com/@RetroBytesUK - A channel about computer history and how our modern computers came to be.

Ruairidh McVeigh - https://youtube.com/@rorymacve - Fantastic vidoes about car/train/plane/ship history, well researched and well produced, highly recommended.

I hope these tips help.

I can confirm that Jet Lag: The Game is worth a try.

Ted Lasso is very good, while having basically no sex or violence

whaleross ,
@whaleross@lemmy.world avatar

Worth mentioning that it is not about football, it's about the people in and around a football team. I have zero interest in football and Ted Lasso is one of my favourite shows.

pelletbucket , in "Men are bad at picking up on women's hints." What are your actual thoughts on this sentiment?
@pelletbucket@lemm.ee avatar

maybe it's more, women feel like they have to give hints because being direct can receive judgment or not be safe. so it's not that they're bad at hinting it's just that they have to use hints a lot more often than we do, and I can't pick up a hint to save my life
