The use of "guys" as a neutral address bothers me, but in part it just makes a relatively good test of respect: if after you repeatedly correct someone they continue to persist in using it, that tells you something about them.

It's just very clearly a gendered term, no matter local conventions around use, and if you are repeatedly asked to not use it by people who are in the group you refer to and you continue to use it anyways that says a lot.

@hrefna plus, "y'all" is right there and way more fun.

1/… I'll ask a favor of you.

This trial hasn't even started yet, not one witness. Yet...

I'm getting Doomers galore in my feed.

A Trumpy helped convict him in an earlier trial.

The prosecutors are vetting the jurors carefully.

I am not Dooming. Not yet.

Can we wait for the trial to be in full swing before predicting the worst possible outcome? Or do people thrive on constant pessimism? I just don't.

Thanks so much for listening. Let's try to be hopeful.

@GottaLaff @chrisg best part of this one is none of the cities in bio are even in the US. Surely there are better things to do than Doom about the minutia of another country's internal politics!

NBC News exit poll: #Ohio Republican primary voters

11% said they'd vote for Biden in November

Another 8% said they will not vote for either candidate in November

@GottaLaff @Yup_Its_Holly @Infoseepage @birdpoof @TomSullivan oh this idiot again. Drops into discussions knowing he's not willing to be convinced, then whines about people "barking" at him. A well deserved plonk.

Sorry @abreaction but it is you who seem to be insane.

But congrats! You're my first of the day! And thank you for playing .

E. Jean Carroll is obviously insane.

I'll never support the GOP after they turned down Ukraine aid, but we should be honest about what's going on here.

If your focus with gender affirming care is on those who regret it and you use that as a justification to deny it or gatekeep it then I need you to take a step back and examine literally any other medical procedure.

Any.

It's not that there aren't those who regret it, it's not that there isn't an error rate, it isn't that those who regret it don't deserve compassion and aid.

But if you look at that and go "therefore we should downplay the benefits" then go look at any other procedure first

@hrefna it's insane! My (cis dude) kill shot in every conversation about this is "so you're also exactly this concerned with boob jobs at the same age, right?"

For Some Reason, everyone shuts the fuck up immediately.

@hrefna I know of dudes who (as minors, decades ago) had their legs surgically broken to get a few more inches!

This is absolutely the most insane invented concern in my lifetime. It doesn't survive even the barest modicum of scrutiny.

@hrefna consent, what a concept.

It's always interesting to me to see what people think of as Enterprise™ or Google Scale™

About half the time it seems completely orthogonal to what is actually used in Enterprise™ or at Google Scale™

"We don't need that, it's only useful at Google Scale™" seems to have about a 50/50 chance of actually being something that is related to Google's scale and not just… like a standard "you have a distributed system" requirement or a more general problem.

Then it gets reinvented, because of course

skorgu ,
@skorgu@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna it's funny when it's the reverse. Just because you're at Google doesn't mean everything is actually Google scale. Sometimes things are small!

@hrefna sometimes the most important part of optimization is stopping engineers from optimizing.

"Anything you layer on top of the fediverse should be more consent based than the foundational architecture of the fediverse!"

…I.

Just.

Tell me you don't understand scale without telling me you don't have a grip on scale.

Also, again, we can have an entire conversation about implicit vs. explicit consent, but it has to start from two bases:

  1. Don't harass people.

  2. An understanding of what is actually out there and how it actually works.

@skorgu@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna that would get in the way of the moral indignation.

There is a whole genre of video that consists of model railroad hobbyists with realistic set ups doing video from the front of the train (making the world seem to scale) and their cats terrorizing the trains like the cutest, fuzziest kaiju.
