“Complete Dehumanization”: Israel Killed Over 800 Palestinians in 11 Days ( truthout.org )

From June 1 to June 11, Israeli forces killed over 800 Palestinians and wounded over 2,400 as they carried out bombardments and raids across Gaza, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported. This is an average of over 72 Palestinians killed each day at the hands of Israeli forces....

scarabic ,

Maybe that’s because people more concerned than yourself have been risking their lives and going to great effort to inject aid to keep it away for one more day, one more day.

scarabic ,

It will be the ultimate irony when Israel finally carries out its own Holocaust of millions.

Hamas Wants Guarantees Ceasefire Will Actually Happen, While US Says Hamas Is Rejecting the Proposal ( truthout.org )

Following the UN Security Council vote to approve a three-phase ceasefire in Gaza, U.S. officials and other international allies of Israel are cynically placing blame on Hamas for a stall in current ceasefire negotiations — even as Israel has insisted on indefinitely continuing its massacre in Gaza and Hamas has said its main...

“Look at these bad faith negotiators who won’t even accept our empty promises.”

scarabic ,

Yep. Actual coup plotters don’t stand on street corners with signs yelling about it.

scarabic ,

Probably never. Not because I necessarily disagree with you in spirit. This speech is damaging and without redeeming value. My only problem is that the process of deciding what speech is and isn’t permissible is more dangerous than this speech.

scarabic ,

Ah everything you e never actually tried to do seems easy. Especially when you’re 14.

scarabic ,

And that’s the most insidious part. I’m not sure people are voting to do good in the world anymore. Some of these votes are stones thrown at someone. Like a Trump voter told me, “The whole system is rotten and he’s going to destroy it utterly so we can build anew. Things might get worse for a while before they can get better, but there’s no other way.”

I found that statement terrifying because the dude basically said he thought we needed to destroy society but he said absolutely nothing about what to build in its place.

scarabic ,

There will be a rush of US startups to replace it, and they will all be stage 1 enshittification, so they might actually be good for a while, like TikTok once was.

We are blessed with a small but gorgeous local library that looks like a Frank Lloyd Wright creation, full of natural light. The stacks are lovingly curated and the computer services are great. Wonderful garden out front, friendly staff inside, and modern equipment that makes checkout a breeze. We can reserve books online or check if they are in, etc.

Anyway, after school, our kid walks to the end of the block with her friends and goes into the library. From there, we pick her up. That place is jumping in the afternoons, let me tell you. All the local regulars and all the kids just out of school: littles and teenagers. It’s busy and alive but not noisy (nor are they oppressive assholes about keeping silence). It’s a moment of civic joy to walk in there and get my daughter.

The CEO of the company I work at proudly tells us that his compensation is mostly stock, so if we’re not doing well as a company, he will not get paid.

He thinks this will sound like he’s got skin in the game and is making some kind of sacrifice.

What it actually tells me is that he is aligned to shareholders, not customers or staff. And that he cares about the stock price, which is not at all the same things as whether we are doing well as a company.

scarabic ,

You’re right that stock price is something.

Companies serve three groups:

  1. customers
  2. staff
  3. shareholders

Stock price measures #3. And one out of three is a pretty shitty overall score.

Before someone tells me that shareholders are everything, and that this is capitalism, I understand your point but if any of 1, 2, or 3 stop participating, the company stops functioning. All three must be served. You just waved aside staff as a bag of feelings, but they literally do everything at the company.

scarabic ,

Yeah yeah. You’re saying that corporate leaders don’t care about people, and we all know that. But the company has to offer staff something to come in and work, right? They get paid right? I’m not saying everyone needs to get desk massages and blow jobs. But there has to be something in it for the staff or there is no company. It sucks to work somewhere that the staff get bare minimum. But the best companies in the world offer a lot more than that, because talent is worth it.

Fresh kill is a far cry from raw meat days after butchering which is only deemed safe on the condition that it gets cooked.

ORLY? Poland? A NATO ally, who fought with the US in Iraq? Please try it.

And bleaching all materials in the room. And slowly destroying anything made of paper or plastic or wood.

This article is a longer version of “bleach kills it fast - what if that could be brought inside the body somehow?”

Occulus sold more headsets than Microsoft sold Xboxes. And that’s 2021. https://x.com/JackSoslow/status/1471549480595955716?s=20

scarabic ,

We can argue that this product has no continuity with anything anyone has ever used, or we can admit that it is a new kind of immersive screen for a world where people are absolutely hooked to screens. It’s pretty simple.

And the very concept of virtual reality has been an inevitability for decades. This is something people have been fantasizing about for a long time, thought they underestimated the technical challenges and limitations of it all. We’re getting close to overcoming most of them now.

While the whole world laughs at Mark Zuckerburg, Occulus headsets are selling in rapidly increasing numbers. They sold more headsets in 2021 than Microsoft sold Xboxes. So to use your own words, yes, this product is a foray into a space that is rapidly growing in popularity.

scarabic ,

Why are you talking about whether people will feel good walking around in public with headsets on? The Apple Vision doesn’t even do that. You realize it’s tethered by a wire, and is closer in usage to an iMac than Google Glass, right?

You seem to have your own speech about headsets you want to espouse but it is not connected to reality or this thread or this product.

scarabic ,

People always talk about how their kids grow up so fast, but kittens grow up REALLY fast!

TIL Alice Walton (Walmart heir) killed a pedestrian in a driving accident and was never charged. She has also been arrested for DUI twice but never charged. ( en.wikipedia.org )

The sketchy part is not her not getting convicted. It's that no charges were even filed. I also enjoyed this bit of info from one of the sources regarding the other DUI incident. Prosecutors in Texas have dropped a 2011 drunken driving citation against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. heiress Alice Walton.

If you have heard the word “intersectionality” but didn’t know what it meant, this gives us a good example.

Feminists will say that women are not treated fairly overall, BUT if you’re a white woman, you might actually have it better than a black man. And if you’re an extremely wealthy white woman, you might even have it better than most men. All the factors combine.

It also works in reverse. Basically a gay black woman might not feel anything in common with Mrs. Walton, despite them both being women, and might easily see her as an oppressor.

“Get into the housing market while you can.”

My brother, mid 2005.

scarabic ,

Yep. Bought a residence for $500k and two years later it was worth $330K.

scarabic ,

Sold it 5 years ago for somewhere in the 700s. So ultimately it turned out okay. But there was an extremely awkward period where I had to move out and would have sold if it wasn’t underwater. I wound up becoming a landlord for several years which I wouldn’t have chosen and felt pretty scummy but it did save me in the long run.

Lemmy.world Admin Response to Meta/Threads

There has been significant discussion in recent weeks regarding Meta/Threads. We would like to express our disappointment with the negative and threatening tone of some of these discussions. We kindly ask everyone to engage in civil discourse and remember that not everyone will share the same opinions, which is perfectly...

scarabic ,

I didn’t realize that defederation only breaks the link in one direction. I don’t like the idea of my posts being exported to Threads where they’ll have an entirely different discussion on them.

Here’s what Romaine lettuce eventually becomes ( i.imgur.com )

I had a great year for Romaine lettuce. After learning how nutritious it is, I started a bunch of seeds and they did really well. We had more than we could eat, and after a camping trip I came home to find they’d bolted (see picture). I recommend trying this plant if you have any interest. They are reportedly water intensive...

Beautiful. Nice to see the post updated, too.
