Come to think if it, why would he tell the probation officers to "be safe"? Is he anticipating they might be in danger, for some strange reason?

If this wasn't trump, I'd say this is one of those things you say to people. Drive safe, safe flight, be safe out there, etc.

rdyoung ,

It simultaneously protects the seeds from birds or other jerks and keeps the soil moist longer

rdyoung ,

I wouldn't say it's a form of mulch. Mulch tends to be thicker and heavier and is more likely to smother plants. You can put straw down too heavy but it's easier with mulch.

rdyoung ,

Where is that coming from because I've always known mulch as the wood chips and plastic sheeting as something else.

Plus, please go have a drink and a smoke because you are nit picking where there are no nits nor need to be this pedantic. Also, are you incapable of having a conversation without having to be "right" all the time?

rdyoung ,

If you think that comment was being nit picky, send me your address so I can send you a dictionary.

rdyoung ,

Wow, you guys are toxic and mentally stressed. I can disagree with what people call mulch. My entire life between growing my own stuff, working retail like home depot, tgt, etc, I've never had people call straw or sheeting of any kind "mulch". Wood? Yep, mulch. Chopped up car tires or other rubber? Yep, mulch. Straw or pine needles? Normally just reffered to as ground covering. I've been gardening and growing shit for damn near 30 years. I was growing stuff outside of an apt that had zero accessible dirt and only concrete to work with.

The fact that you think that is whining after someone had to play the well actually game on a post about gardening tells me all I need to know about you and I thank you for sticking your head up so I can block you. At least lemmy does blocks right.

Have a nice day now.

You have no idea how language works. Have a nice day now.

Even with some or most prices increased, Costco is still one of the best places to shop for a ton of reasons that any member can fill you in on.

It's clear that plenty of people don't understand how this shit works in real life. Did no one here see Costcos official response to a couple of stores voting to unionize?

I am not one to praise any retail whatsoever but I preach the holy site that is Costco to anyone that will listen. Even the single people out there can benefit, if you wear prescription glasses and/or have any meds you need on a regular basis, those alone could save you at least the first years membership.

rdyoung , (edited )

If you or anyone is doing all of their shopping at one at store, that's a you problem. Despite how okay we are doing, we still shop around for deals and take advantage of things like teeter doing multiplied points on Fridays towards gas discounts, checking out Aldi and Lidl for deals, etc.

Costco does not have a large variety or selection of what they offer but most things are pretty much guaranteed to be a better deal than elsewhere. For example, because of vpx having issues I've settled on Celsius as my current caffeine+other stuff drink when I am working or otherwise need the boost. Amazon and elsewhere sell 12 packs for like $19-$25+, Costco has the same pricing (approximately) but it's 18 cans instead of 12. Another example is a greenworks riding lawnmower I've been eyeballing as soon as I can find the 6k+, bb has it for about the same price or even cheaper when it's on sale but Costco includes $2400+ worth of extras like twice the batteries and the not cheap clippings bag for the back of it for the same price.

Long story short. Take advantage of what Costco has to offer and do what you have to do to save a buck. Don't just assume that it's a better deal because reasons but I've learned that for a lot of things, Costco is going to be a better deal even if it's priced slightly higher or same.

Oh and anyone reading this. Stop buying most of your meat and produce at regular stores like Costco, teeter, publix, etc. Find one or 3+ local farms that sell directly to the public, also keep an eye out for what are called CSAs, you prepay an amount upfront in late winter, early spring and then you get a set number of weekly pickups that are based on what you want and what they have fresh and ready to go. The ones we have worked with are usually open to swapping things out if you end up with more of one thing than you would like but that is based on what they have available for a swap. There is also a local one that we hit up every so often for farm fresh milk that is so much better than any store bought of any brand.

rdyoung ,

If you actually believe that for most products, you don't know how to compare across stores, brands, etc. Yes, it's cheaper for some things elsewhere because A) You don't have to buy as much as a min purchase and B) what you are comparing at a cheaper store is actually truly cheaper in all ways. You need to compare not only ounce to ounce but quality as well.

I'm seriously amazed (not really) at the people who shop Costco but don't understand how and why it works the way it works.

You should also check out Lidl and Aldi if they are near you.

rdyoung ,

I love seeing stuff like this. Iirc, panels are given a 25 year lifespan. If most panels will last this long and longer, it would only make sense to replace/upgrade when they actually break or there is a significant enough increase in efficiency to make it worth the investment. Not unlike the batteries in evs lasting longer than even the original engineers estimated.

rdyoung ,

It is extremely expensive and arduous to bury lines that have been aerial for decades. The cost to bury existing lines is exponentially greater than the cost to keep fixing them as needed for decades. New lines are sometimes buried depending on whether it's an upgrade to existing infrastructure, power going to a new neighborhood, etc.

Do yourself a favor and look into exactly what it would take just to get approval from the city, county, etc and right of way from the various owners of land where you want to bury them. Not to mention the hell that would cause for traffic when you have to shut down roads to go under them or worst case tear them up and replace them.

I am not giving the utility companies a pass here but it's not as easy as some people seem to think it is.

rdyoung , (edited )

None of this is accurate at all.

Work harder at your fake news and bullshit.

For those who may not know, we have gun regulations because the black panthers started carrying and some people (I'll let you guess who) didn't like it that black folks were carrying weapons.

rdyoung ,

Its because the shootings are caused by those transgenders. How? Reasons.

rdyoung ,

Trump hasn't been right about anything. The things he and the rest of the maggats have been "right" about are because they say that x will happen and then they make it happen.

Anyone who votes for trump either wants to see the world burn or has been so brainwashed that their opinions aren't worth listening to.

It's time for the adults to stand up and take this country back from the nazis and fascists who want to burn it to the ground. It's time to stop giving the maggats any mic time and we need to stop listening their ramblings.

rdyoung ,

Not really, assuming the water isn't that deep you could wade out and harvest that way. Plenty of food plants are grown and harvested in water like this.

rdyoung ,

Looking closer and I see that too. This one may not be the right setup but it's definitely doable if it's done right.

Floating Island Garden ( lemmy.world )

Our retention pond in our neighborhood has a lot of algae and problematic plant growth due to the surrounding farms and lawn runoff, so we're experimenting with a floating island to pull nutrients out before they can cause problems. This will also provide some interesting flowering plants, and more fish habitats....

rdyoung ,

Yep, hemp has been long known to rejuvenate soil. It's been used for decades (or more) as a rotation crop to restore soil after something like corn or wheat sucks up all of the nutrients.

rdyoung ,

You are correct but I think hemp is similar to clover in that there is some symbiotic relationship with other organisms that help rejuvenate the soil even if you don't mulch it back it in. I could be wrong here but I know that plenty of farmers grow hemp between other crops and likely don't "waste" it by mulching it back in.

If you are looking to pull bad stuff out of water, I'd think that growing anything that would hold onto the bad stuff as it falls to the bottom of the river or lake and stores it there would be a solution as well as harvesting and transporting it elsewhere.

rdyoung ,

Did this get downvoted for the bondage bit? Bunch of vanilla fuddy duddies round these parts it seems.

rdyoung ,

This is it right here and this scenario was most likely the plan from the outset, they planned on this and orchestrated it.

Why didn't they think your penis was real?

    rdyoung ,

I have a huge yard and do my best to keep it under control, I still have a ton of birds, butterflies, fireflies, etc in my yard all the time. I even saw a groundhog or similar the other day.

    rdyoung ,

You can do both. You can keep the yard under control and still have butterflies, bees, birds, etc. I don't fertilize, bug spray, etc and not only is my yard a bitch and a half to mow if I let it go or can't get to it, the wildlife that is making the yard home is awesome.

There was a time when judges appointed by one side of the aisle would tend to lean towards the other side because of the aforementioned lack of blatant corruption and ideological based appointments.

    rdyoung ,

On mobile I get no ads. You should check out adguard. If you are on android you can install it at the os level and/or you can install the addon to FF

    rdyoung ,

Then by all means, carry on good sir/madam/???

    rdyoung ,

Ooh, time for a re-watch. I love that show.

    rdyoung ,

Why are you yelling at us?

    rdyoung ,

I'm surprised someone of your advanced age is capable of wrapping their head around lemmy. And I know what a boomer really is, so unless you are 60+ at this point, you're not actually a boomer.

For the record, I say the above mostly in jest.

    rdyoung ,

    What the fuck is prevagen?

    rdyoung ,

I'm only woke when I'm not asleep.

    rdyoung ,

When I need to be more woke I make some coffee or crack open an energy shot or drink.

    rdyoung ,

Only when I overdue it with it caffeine and other stimulants.

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say "yes sir" and "no ma'am", and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I'm not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like "no thank you, ma'am" based on their appearing AFAB, but on a future visit...

    rdyoung ,

Just add fish. Coy do extremely well in small ponds, I have built and maintained a few of them over the years.

    rdyoung ,

You definitely need the pump, the best thing about koi or gold fish is that they grow to the size of the environment. You also need to make sure that you have enough algae helping to oxygenate the water (for others reading, not necessarily you in particular).

It can take some work to get things just right but once it starts maintaining itself (for the most part) it becomes it's own little world.

Some closing advice for those who live in the part of the world where it gets and stays at or below freezing for weeks or months on end, don't mess with it when it freezes over. Turn off the pump and leave it alone, the fish will hibernate and will wake up when it's warmer. This means keeping kids away from it that may want to poke at the ice.

    rdyoung ,

    Or dash, ltc, dogec, etc.

Xmr is too much of a pain in the ass to use. Dash is so much easier and is seeing so much more development on the ux side of things. It's much easier to scramble funds on chain with dash than with most other coins.

    rdyoung ,

Not Doge, dogec, which is built on dash, pivx, etc.

I'm guessing you don't know how to properly mix funds if/when it's needed. If you really need to obscure source of funds, it's so fucking easy to do so with any coin but I'm not sure if I should be laying that out here in public. It would be the same as giving away the secrets for money laundering, identity theft, etc and that's probably not something I should be sharing with the average user.

I haven't used Xmr in awhile because it was most definitely (as of the last time I used it) not as easy to use as the others.

    rdyoung ,

Only the idiots like him. Guaranteed he doesn't fit in with the ultra wealthy, he is likely seen as a tool literally and figuratively by the people who have been able to keep and grow their generational wealth where as he lost his familial wealth multiple times over.

    rdyoung ,

    Read my comment again.

WTF is going on with the world? Why are there so many manufacturing jobs that require rotating schedules? Are they just trying to destroy your soul and your health? ( sh.itjust.works )

I have been looking for manufacturing, assembly, production positions all over the Midwest. It's absolutely shocking how many of them want you to work rotating shifts....

    rdyoung ,

By not giving a shit. If they are spying on you, they are scared and you have all of the power.

    rdyoung ,

That's the difference between us. I've always found a way to get by and any work place or so called boss that wasn't worthy of my time or energy, didn't get that investment.

Maybe I was just raised different but I am more than willing to tell someone to fuck off if/when its needed, it of course starts more diplomatically than a literal middle finger but I was never afraid to escalate to an actual "fuck off, I'm out of here" when it was needed. It's one reason why I work for myself, I only have myself and my bills to answer to.

There is a growing movement towards unions and other forms of collective bargaining. If you want to keep being afraid of your own shadow, that's fine but don't you dare do others the disservice of pushing them away from taking control of their own destinies.
