Asking again, what game was hardest for you to wrap your head around? I've seen a lot of people struggle with Mage and Burning Wheel, as examples. What about you? What was hard for you to grasp? Or what has been hard for your players in the past?

raphaelkaitz ,
@raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks Lol. Burning Wheel is the one I just refused to keep reading because of the writing style. I can't say the dice system was pleasant either, but I really wasn't happy with his prose.

raphaelkaitz ,
@raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks It's over-long, jokey, full of itself, and doesn't get to the point, which is the worst sin of the lot. Explain your system succinctly and competently. Save your personality for the setting material.

Me: The lesson from Children of Dune is that for humanity to survive it must look ahead multiple generations and not destroy the environment for short term game.

Frank Herbert in God Emperor: Actually what I meant was eugenics. Also no homo.

Ugh, since I started watching more YouTubers last week, my recommendations are now filled with video after video with clickbaity titles and thumbnails talking about the Cynthia Williams resignation. One is over 2 hours long! There's no way anyone has more information than what Rascal News reported in like three tweets, and they certainly have no insight into the Hasbro C-Suite. I almost regret subscribing to more TTRPG YouTubers. The discourse sucks y'all.

raphaelkaitz ,
@raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon If you'd like a list of TTRPG YouTubers unlikely to discuss any of that and likely to produce good content, I'd be happy to drop some of my favorites here.

As far as YouTubers go, I regularly watch @dmtales, Questing Beast, and Lexi from the Gaming Table. What others should I check out? Those engaging in clickbait and/or controversy for controversy sake need not apply.

raphaelkaitz ,
@raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @dmtales https://youtube.com/@fumbletable?si=3ni8PBeSc7PwIgtL is a good source for free or very cheap modules and tools.

If you're interested in BECMI or Mystara at all, BECMI Berserker does great reviews of material and concepts: https://youtube.com/@becmiberserker?si=7m_BVePzUtjykjCJ

If you're interested in solo gaming or the materials that solo gamers use, there are two great channels:

Whelp, opened up a can of generative AI art drama on a Discord, we'll see if it gets me booted. Honestly if you're a small shop and you can't afford artists, no art is perfectly acceptable. I don't buy games for their art. It's nice if there is evocative art to go along with it, but it doesn't make or break the game.

Promoting gen AI bullshit is a dealbreaker though, and I don't believe that's an extreme position to take in late-stage .

raphaelkaitz ,
@raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

@CatDad I've been working on the art for a game, and there is so much nice public domain art that even someone like me, who can't draw anything beautiful, has a huge amount of stuff to choose from and adapt.

I think D&D fantasy art or sci-fi art might be a bit harder, because so much of the public domain stuff has already appeared in other works, but anything renaissance period till the present still has so much to work with.

    @SJohnRoss But if I mention stuff, will you be happy? I mean, The Hounds of Hendenburgh (for Cairn) or The Bloom (for Liminal Horror) are high trust, if I understand what you mean by it. There are a lot of those types of things in those spaces.

    I wrote one myself, for Electric Bastionland, inspired by sandboxy modules like Night of Blood and N3: Destiny of Kings, which isn't pretty but works fine: https://joseburrito.itch.io/night-in-the-old-dave

    Even though I've been running D&D-type games for 30 years, I've never actually run a campaign that takes place in a city. Tonight my Mörk Borg group reach Schleswig for the first time.

    So, my question: What tools do you use to run city adventures with minimal prep? Right now I know what's happening in the city, what they want to do, and I'm writing a small rumour table. Am I missing anything obvious?

    raphaelkaitz ,
    @raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

    @loottheroom A map with neighborhoods or zones of the city and some idea of how long it takes to get from one place to another and what they might see in different zones of the city or which encounters they might have could be helpful.

    I'd recommend taking a quick look at the Chaos Crier zine that came with the Black Sword Hack, if you have access to it. They have a city crawl system there that's not perfect but is good and actually gives the GM to help adjudicate traveling around a city.

    Here's a recent module I wrote for Electric Bastionland: https://joseburrito.itch.io/night-in-the-old-dave

    And here's a blogpost I wrote with tips for running the game Crush Depth Apparition: https://josephkrausz.substack.com/p/how-to-crush-your-players-at-depth

    raphaelkaitz ,
    @raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

    @thoughtpunks I like how there are two sets of evildoers in the same apartment complex, and that players can figure that out if they're careful and clever. And I do like the opportunity for some weird horror, because Electric Bastionland has an ancestry that's basically muppets, and when I first ran the module, one of the monsters ended up wearing a muppet NPC's skin and confronting the PCs. Dark but somewhat silly too.

    @raphaelkaitz@dice.camp avatar

    I wrote up some suggestions for GMs running Crush Depth Apparition. There is also a "review" at the beginning, which essentially is just me saying that the module is fun and great and you should play it.

    @ttrpgblogs Someone just rediscovered pointcrawls and wants to use them for everything? Alrighty. There are reasons that traditional dungeoncrawls and hexcrawls aren't pointcrawls, but hey, pointcrawls are fun and easy and everyone should use them, so why not.

    @Xenograg It's interesting how Ryuutama's description sounds like something I'd enjoy, but then all the people I've seen describe their experiences damper my interest. I think a slightly more focused version of Wanderhome would actually be the better way to get the "interesting travel" experience that Ryuutama claims to offer.
