I salute you, future turdherder.

proctonaut ,

What do you grow?

proctonaut ,

I do not envy you guys. Thanks for all the cheese though.

If you like history, Dan Carlin does one called Hardcore History. Most of them are fairly long but he's a pretty dynamic speaker so it doesn't tend to drag on.

proctonaut ,

I think The Velveteen Rabbit is pretty fucked.

Is there any way to tell the difference between infrared reflected between (I assume) 8 and 13 microns and the infrared emitted due to absorption of shorter wavelengths?

Is everything the worst?

I'm 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can't help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the political...

Graduated in 07. Gave all of my savings to my parents in 08 so they wouldn't lose their house. Bumbled around for a decade and a half trying to get a degree and start my career only to get shit canned from an okay paying job mid-pandemic. Tripped over my own dick in to a great paying union job. Currently working too much overtime and saving every dime I can because I've seen enough shit.

proctonaut ,

I knew they mined a bunch of lignite but I was under the impression they exported most of it.

proctonaut ,

You're teaching me all kinds of shit today.

proctonaut ,

There's a lady that pops up on mine because she replies to anyone's post within 20 miles with unhelpful and unsolicited advice. I call her Peggy Hill.

proctonaut ,

How are you getting your sand that hot?

proctonaut ,

Alright so I have a question for you. Let's say I'm designing one of these things for a greenhouse or something. I'm thinking underground storage tank of 500 gallons or so but basically filling it with sand and then again topping it off with water. It should minimize convection currents in the water and where it there isn't much of a thermal draw there shouldn't be much of an issue right?

proctonaut ,

Curious what they're using for a transfer liquid. Are NaK or sodium systems pressurized to handle that?

proctonaut ,

Thermal mass would be secondary for the sand. I'm more concerned with it helping the structure of the tank underground and avoiding slump from what the tank would be buried in. Probably feeding it heat from a thermal solar set-up.

I was sitting in my pickup outside my apartment listening to the radio and some guy just...got in. I asked "can I help you?" and the look on his face when he realized his mistake was priceless. In his defense Lyft had just started in my area and there was only one other vehicle that looked like mine in that part of the city.

proctonaut ,

I've done that. Even though to myself "who put this apple here?" as I sat down in the passenger seat.

proctonaut ,

Is 2 hours later another time? I could use some crackhead lore building.

proctonaut ,

Then why is my freezer so full of giant ground sloth?

proctonaut ,

I'm only a professional scientist in the loosest sense of the term but for years we've tried to figure out why Joe can't leave the break room to fart and who the fuck does he think he is?

What's this thing called? ( slrpnk.net )

This was a switch that got its wires pulled out. I learned how to desolder today in order to remove it from the little switch board and now there's three holes where this used to be. Does this component have a name, because I'm wondering whether I can just get a replacement one like this. There are lots of tools and supplies at...

proctonaut ,

If I'm repairing something like my washing machine I usually just hardwire stuff to the board so there's no waiting for parts. Shopping around for connectors can be a pain but the important things to look are are pin diameter and pin pitch. Whenever I order I always get a male and female connector because the terminology doesn't seem to be consistent across connector designs. You'll also need a pinning tool for whatever style of connector you get, unless it uses solder cups or something.

proctonaut ,

If I had to pick one on the list that's probably it.

proctonaut ,

Bye bye Ms. Swifty, you died.
Drove my Chevy to the....and so on.

proctonaut ,

I'm all for digging up the big bopper every year and crashing a plane full of his bones into a cornfield.

proctonaut ,

How deep is your well and what kind of geology are you on top of?

proctonaut ,

That's pretty cool. I live over a particularly gassy shale deposit, I wonder if they could pull something like that off here.

proctonaut ,

Banks Lake in the US has been doing it for quite awhile too.

proctonaut ,

09 Toyota Tacoma with 320k miles. Or roughly half a million kilometers I think.

proctonaut ,

I have a recording of the big machines where I work. Rhythmic clunking and whirring motors puts me right to sleep.

proctonaut ,

Yea, sometimes. There's usually enough other stuff going on it's not a problem.

The Tufted Shitdick is more suited to a temperate climate but are occasionally spotted as far south as the equator.
