Our favorite Squeaky Beetle has returned!

This year, I found 'em in pretty sad shape, upsidedown in a puddle on the front step. I picked good ol' SB up, and set 'em in their usual spot. They hung out for a night, then took off again.

It's like a fun relative at this point, drops in once a year, says hi, stays over for a few days, then heads out on another adventure.

This is the 7th or 8th year SB has visited us.

(Only positive replies that validate SB please 😋)

@alice I love your tags! Such a beautiful thing, to remember we are all living together in this home which is the planet we live on. (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ🐛💖

@alice This is beautiful. Your acts of kindness, while maybe small in the eyes of others, have made SB's life so much better. It's all we can do in the end, right?

I have been promoted! The UK doesn't do the US-style tenure system, but if it did, this promotion would be the equivalent. Yay me!

There were once giant aquatic sloths, like seacows... but sloths. (Thalassocnus)

And they lived in fear of the toothy teethed whale dolphins (Acrophyseter) who are the scariest things I've ever seen.

Miocene is one giant uncanny valley. I don't know why it doesn't get more attention for the sheer creep out factor.

What kind of a MONSTER sets the abstract length at 1 page AND ALSO specifies 1.5 spacing?

Either give me single-spacing or else have the courage of your convictions and specify a 500-word limit. 1.5-spacing is just cruel.

At least I get a second page for references, figures, and examples.

Hmmph.

@ergative This gave me such a flashback to my stubborn stodgy advisor and his stupid rules for submissions.

Ok, I've got to do a weird-ass brain dump here. It's about , , , and

Bear with me.

(Or, y'know, don't.)

Johnson & Ettlinger (2010) did a very nice study that showed people are better at distinguishing an unfamiliar vowel from a familiar one, even if the contrast is one that doesn't exist in their language, than they are at distinguishing two unfamiliar vowels from each other even if the contrast between the two vowels is familiar.
