As I gear up to run , what do I do to concentrate my efforts? I did find a used copy of 3rd ed Ars Magica on my local eBay, and bought that one! It's a game I have never managed to figure out.

@SJohnRoss @AndreasDavour Currently playing in an Ars Magica campaign at the moment (I tend to post about the sessions weekly). It can have a very different style of play to other games, especially the troupe idea of everyone playing multiple characters.

It's also one of the few games I've played where Downtime can be the most extensive and important part of the game.

It is not a simple system however.

I’ve been reading way too many recently published scenarios that feature a perfunctory investigation before the Investigators board a train to creepy town that is a one way exercise in hit point and SAN attrition. Sure, some of the imagery is very creepy, but something is definitely missing, that being real problem solving and meaningful choices.

@Tim_Eagon @lextenebris @luxet That's one of my problems with CoC as a player. Characters are often normal people with no experience of the supernatural. My first instinct on discovering that bad shit is happening is to run away and try to avoid the adventure.

That is partly down to me finding it harder to play heroic adventure seeking characters the closer the game setting is to the modern day.

I think one reason I prefer Delta Green, is that characters are expecting to deal with bad shit.

I was thinking about the feudal technocracy my group might visit, and had an idea. What if it was a mechwarrior clan society? Only problem is, not high enough tech level. You only really start getting mechs at TL 12. So I wondered if there was a higher TL world on my map with that government type.

But I did find one that matches, and it’s not far from where they’ve been.

@deinol no reason there can't be a mech mercenary group on a lower tech world. Or the world has bought in higher tech mechs and has to worry about keeping the flow of spare parts from offworld running.

Or maybe the world used to have a higher TL, but has fallen on hard times due to all the destructive feuding between the planetary clans. What it has left are relics from the past.

Hey , GURPS, Rifts, Shadowrun, Star Wars, and other non-D&D friendos:
✋ Raise your hand if you entered the hobby with not D&D.
🎲 What was your first experience? How did you get into the hobby?

🎁 Bonus: Which of you got into LARP before tabletop?

@thoughtpunks My memory is very hazy, but I think my first intro into RPGs was the Fighting Fantasy books. Not truly RPGs themselves, but I started running a game with multiple players using those rules in a very RPG sort of way.

Then I got introduced to AD&D.

Given I was barely into double digits of age, my memory is very hazy. I remember the game being based on the Death Zone from the Dr Who 20th anniversary special, with some Star Wars thrown in for good measure.
