Advice for choosing a username:

All Fediverse accounts have a unique address that looks like @username

However, for readability most posts just show usernames in the body of the post. This means it's a good idea to choose a distinctive memorable username. Even if you have your own custom domain, people won't see it in posts so you still need a distinctive username.

Also, choose a username longer than four letters. Shorter names are harder to click on.

Certainly here on Mastodon, I see the full address the vast majority of the time.

Oh, I mostly just look at the username under the display name.

Most top-level posts don't tag anyone. I assumed you were talking about the post headers.
