The “Liberal Arts” education is a suite of skills, philosophical stances, and information that has been refined over hundreds of years. It includes both technical skills and problem solving techniques— it provides a foundation for more specialized study but also for philosophical reflection. It evolves over time, but isn’t subject whims of the market or fashion.

What is the role of Computer Science in the Platonic ideal of the liberal arts education?

@futurebird I have a computer science degree from a Liberal Arts school, College.

The emphasis was on the /principles/ of logic, software engineering and databases rather than the minutia of the language of the day.

A big advantage was an integration with the rest of the education, including critical thinking and writing.

A CS degree from a liberal arts school has been a durable toolkit that enabled me not just to code but to move into technical leadership positions.

No regrets!

A major US state just achieved a critical milestone for nearly two weeks: 'It's wild that this isn't getting more news coverage'

" has set a benchmark for , with wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal supplying 100% of the state's electricity demand for 25 out of the last 32 days (and counting)."

ssmtp is unmaintained.

msmtp is the recommended successor. The Arch wiki recommends also considering OpenSMTPD, which I haven't looked at yet.

After testing ssmtp, nullmailer, and msmtp for relay-only outgoing mail on Fedora . Here's my final report:

  • ssmtp is packaged for Fedora and I got it working, but the Ansible role I found for it had been abandoned by the author because ssmtp itself is unmaintained.
  • nullmailer might have worked, but is not packaged for Fedora.
  • msmtp worked. I used this Ansible role, after patching it to work on Fedora: https://github.com/chriswayg/ansible-msmtp-mailer

Plant-heavy ‘flexitarian’ diets could help limit global heating, study finds

“It’s important to stress that is not vegetarian and not vegan,” Humpenöder says. “It’s less livestock products, especially in high-income regions, and the diet is based on what would be the best diet for human health.”

@CelloMomOnCars And more plants equals more help.

It’s more impactful to do diet shifts that can you sustain rather a big change that’s soon reversed.

You might have noticed some people publish much longer posts than the usual 500 character limit. There are three ways this is possible:

-The server owner has customised their Mastodon server's software to change the character limit

-The server owner has installed a pre-customised version of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown

-The server isn't running on Mastodon software at all, but something totally different such as Friendica, WordPress etc

@nazokiyoubinbou @FediTips As a reader, I appreciate the limit. I open Mastodon expecting a stream of short-form posts to scroll through.

if there started to be a lot more longer form posts with “read more” links, it would have a different vibe.
