go ahead russia, divide your forces 😈

lurch ,

for us it's simple, but putin is not the sharpest tool in the shed. we have to repeat it frequent and slowly for him

lurch ,

I think getting into this situation is stupid. Attacking a friendly neighbour is also stupid. Having to oppress opposition also indicates he's too stupid to face criticism and convince his people. I think a six grader could rule russia better.

lurch ,

looking at your food or plate is okay. people don't think you're sad, just preoccupied or interested in your food.

btw you can always close your eyes and picture a jumping cow. it's free

lurch ,

i thought he assumed office to salvage his "business", make it more lucrative and seem less shady

lurch ,

it actually eats ram and preserves cookies tho

Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?

Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?

lurch ,

just cleanse the whole building by setting it on fire

lurch ,

if the bottle has a big opening, i turn it after pouring, so drops hanging near the opening go back inside.

Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

lurch ,

Wait? Your xscreensaver is checking for updates / new versions? AFAIK it's not supposed to do that. ... or did you just try to phrase this cynical and it was your package management?

lurch ,

I gotta take a look if that's just your old version or every version is doing this. I mean what's next? Sending emails? Push requests? Self updating? If so, it's maybe time for a fork. But maybe it's also a compile time option.

lurch ,

wow. thank you for checking

Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore...

lurch ,

You don't have to keep up with all the news. Your mental health is more important. The most important news will be impossibe to avoid anyways. There will be memes about it and it will be on home pages of search and email sites, etc..

lurch ,

yes, it's very common in my region. 50% of companies I worked at had CI servers that ran unit tests round the clock. the companies are only slightly bigger than yours. also i know multiple companies my company worked with also have CI setups.

some even auto deploy to prod when the tests in master passed okay.

most use hudson or jenkins for CI with junit, phpunit, selenium and/or cypress for testing.

I smuggled a KFC bucket into a cinema once. Good times.

I don't like dogs (except Huskies), because they often bark so sudden and loud. It seems they only have one volume setting for barking. I mean, they are cute and all, but one day they're gonna give me a heart attack.

lurch ,

In my entire life I have never heard a husky bark, even though there were a few in the town I grew up. They just howled or yelped sometimes, but it's not irritating. It's like they are stealth dogs 🙂

Remember when he wanted to nuke the hurricane? 🤣

lurch ,

Nah, sending people into exile for their birthplace or taking part in politics is some middle ages shit. Only the bad guys actually want to go back to that. AFAIK he also has US citizenship (among others).

Also, ideally, foreigners taking part in politics should just give you international talking points. If that threatens your country, some safeguards are off. In that case, those should be fixed, so it's no longer a big deal.

lurch ,

I just recently watched Star Trek TNG S04E21 The Drumhead. A reminder how important due process is and how easy it can derail.

lurch ,

remember when russia "tested" an anti-satellite weapon? I suspect that's at least part of how they coerce Starlink and Musk

Lithuania’s FM: Russian GPS jamming of commercial flights 'too dangerous to ignore' ( kyivindependent.com )

Baltic foreign ministers have warned that the suspected Russian jamming of GPS systems aboard commercial flights is "too dangerous to ignore." This comes after it was revealed that two Finnish aircraft were forced to turn around mid-journey in recent days.

lurch ,

For everyones safety, we, and I mean the whole world, should invade russia and split it up like Germany after WW2. It's probably gonna be a mess either way. Better to rip off the bandaid quickly, than keeping the human meatgrinder going for even longer. I'm really fed up with that russian bullshit.

lurch ,

that's rude and also useless. Ukraine can just use unofficial ways.

lurch ,

bro, we have enough image formats. thank you

lurch ,

the very christian guy sounds like he's trying to cover something up. may be closeted gay with an affair with a migrant or so idk. he's preemptively telling you his cover story, so when the truth reaches you, you'll be like "very Christian racist guy would never".

the other racist ones could be of the sort "if i don't get disputed, they are silently agreeing". you have multiple options to deal with that. for example, telling HR, who may be interested in protecting the company from a racist image, or you could mention to coworkers, you suspect they are racist. both could lead to them leaving the company. speaking from personal experience, but i'm in EU.

lurch ,

the workers can be shareholders though. some companies even pay a bit in stock or options. however, dividends are usually very low and most shareholders make their money with gambling the stock market, which has little to do with labor at all.

lurch ,

hitler also got out early before his second, successful coup attempt, so i guess they'll try getting him out in time

lurch ,

finally. it will take me a while to forget this treason tho.

lurch ,

the russians must see this, so they know to stay at home or desert.

lurch ,

the explosion was so powerful it bent the load bed of the golf cart

I frequently give wrong dates of birth (including year) where it doesn't matter. Maybe he did, too. (I do it, because I hate getting birthday spam. So when they send me birthday vouchers etc and it's on another day, I feel like I beat them instead of being just annoyed. If it becomes important, I can always say it was a typo and have them change it, if I can't do it myself.)

lurch ,

yes, i stand up against racism etc.. so even if people consider publicly racist people crazy and try to ignore them, i'll make sure and confront them. that will either show they're actually crazy or show them their racism isn't tolerated. can't let one slip thru undisputed

lurch ,

I like Dr Prendergasts style. She looks like she's gonna catch them all.

lurch ,

but if your bloodline would end anyway, you don't need to worry about it 👍

lurch ,

I'm really scared to logout! Any help is appreciated.

dood. this fear is as old as unix. the solution as old as multi user login: go to a different terminal/tty/connection and log in as your user. if it works it means it's safe to log out because you can log in again. also always do this when you change your ssh public key on a server. keep one log in open while you try a second login, so you can fix it if it broke.
