The artist who painted the initials in this Italian manuscript (@subugoe Cod. MS philol. 116) painted this A upside down so that it now looks like a V. An A was added in the margin as a correction. Did the artist work upside-down, and if so, why?

Pre-modern books are great records of human error and therefore of historic working practices.

This is the handwriting of renowned historian Theodor Mommsen @subugoe. I‘m a trained palaeographer and I can’t read it - not without spending a long time working out the individual letters. But native German speakers who have seen this type of writing before have much less trouble. Cursive is all about exposure! @histodons @medievodons @historikerinnen

Here is another lovely from @subugoe (8 Cod. MS pers. 14), containing the Šerḥ-i Sabḥat al-abrār, a literary text. This is from the 17th or 18th century. @historikerinnen @histodons @medievodons

@subugoe @historikerinnen @histodons @medievodons My student has just discovered what looks like 18th-century censorship in this manuscript! The miniature of Yusuf and Zuleika having sex on their wedding night has been obscured by a carefully cut, glued and decorated piece of paper.

Open page of a manuscript in Arabic, with a colourful miniature of two people having sex partially hidden by a flap of paper.

Looking at #Arabic #manuscripts with my students today. This is a stunning frontispiece from @subugoe Cod MS arab. 190, containing the Kitāb al-wāfīya fi šarḥ al-kāfīya from 1478, collated with the author’s own copy. @historikerinnen @medievodons @histodons #palaeography

Update from the eManuSkript project: we've mocked up a website with a holistic interface for all the apps; we're starting tagging of the 200GB supplementary training set for our neural network; the students are developing script & #manuscript training sets for online tutorials; and much, much more. I have such a brilliant team!

We're looking for a student with graphic design skills for a short project - if you're it, please get in touch! #palaeography @historikerinnen @histodons @medievodons

These are digital photos of a camel from a 15th-century Persian manuscript in the @subugoe (Cod. MS pers. 14). The purple image was taken with ultraviolet light and the grey picture with infrared. Because infrared goes right through most pigments, it reveals the preliminary sketch of the camel underneath the pigment (which you see in the UV photo). Really interesting for the history of art!

@medievodons @histodons @historikerinnen Here are some images I took just now of ordinary ballpoint on paper, the first with UV and the second with normal light. Great definition on the ink edges and paper fibres.

Stroke of a ballpoint pen on paper under normal light. The whole image is reddish purple in colour.

Please share the information about the below as widely as you can - this is a #palaeography course for the general public, which is super rare!

"Join Dr Manuel Muñoz in a one-day overview of Iberian late-medieval books at the London International Palaeography School. We will explore the evolution of book scripts between the 13th and the 15th centuries, and we will discover what makes late-medieval Iberian #manuscripts unique."

I should also say that @InsularMSS will involve not only #medieval #manuscript studies but also #digitalhumanities and scientific research: palaeoproteomics, #multispectral and photometric stereo #imaging, handwritten text recognition (#HTR), Raman and XRF #spectroscopy, infra-red #microscopy & much more. Perhaps most important, though, will be the freedom and time to do this important work!

Very cool that the oldest known Polish prose text is actually assembled from binding fragments. It really highlights the importance of , and the possibility of more treasures hidden inside early modern book bindings.

The manuscript is digitised at https://polona.pl/item-view/032eb921-7c51-4d0e-a9aa-deb98a51cb4e?page=7.

Is anyone on Mastodon knowledgeable about Tironian notes? I've got tentative readings of two headings in a 9th c. Text from the Loire Valley, which mix Tironian notes and Latin charaters. But there are 13,000 T. Notes in Schmitz, many of which look very similar. Thanks!!

Lists like these really drive it home how many #medieval #manuscripts have been lost over time - nearly 1,500 manuscript were destroyed at the National Library of Warsaw alone in WW2.

Today my students and I are on our way to beautiful #Vercelli and #Verona for our annual week-long spring school! We’re working with some amazing #medieval #manuscripts there (including the Vercelli Book!), but also with modern technologies like #multispectral imaging and endoscopy. I’ll try to post images of some of our activities using #Vercelli2024. But first - 11 hours on the train…

Some very happy #eighth-century fishes swimming around. They appear in a famous early Italian version of Cassiodorus' Institutions, which is one of a number of #manuscripts showing a vivarium: a pool for raising living #fish, here linking directly to the river. It represents Cassiodorus' own monastery, Vivarium - one of the first real medieval Western monasteries – at Squillace in Calabria.
