Pro tip to find a way around Trafikverket-SJ timetable chaos in Sweden

A search is part of the parameters in the URL on SJ's website - like this https://www.sj.se/en/kop-resa/valj-resa/Hamburg%20Hbf/Stockholm%20Central/2024-05-26

So you can just bookmark it, and check it each morning, to then - finally about a fortnight before you depart find it will indeed run…

lavergnetho ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@jon I have a similar search-URL at SJ, around those dates. SJ should at least prioritize us, those who check every morning, in the queue for buying the tickets 😭.

But really? Just 15 days ahead? That's the planning of my whole family-trip to France hanging thin on getting a ticket for that train 😢.

The cheap airplane tickets are being sold while I wait for SJ to announce its night trains.

So excited/humbled to have #ESA and my partner institutes in #Oslo this week to discuss #CIMR LEVEL-2 products!

#CIMR is an upcoming #Sentinel satellite that will help us monitor the #Earth and its #Climate in the polar regions.

We are at the start of an exciting 4-year activity, the #L2PAD, to prepare #OpenSource algorithms and products for this satellite. Can't wait to meet the team, it will be the first time I meet some of them in person.

@anlomedad Thanks for the questions!

Historically, satellites (the platform without the instrument) were expensive to build and fly. There was thus a tendency to fit many instruments on one satellite. Meteorology satellites still have this model. It sounds resonable on paper, but also has drawbacks. For example, if the launch or satellite fails, we loose many instruments. Also, it requires trade-offs (e.g. one instruments gets in the way for another, you cannot choose an optimum orbit,...)

1/

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@anlomedad

Nowadays, satellites are more and more specialized. One instrument per satellite.

For CIMR there was no choice: the CIMR antenna is so big, that any additional sensor would have been in the way. In many cases it makes sense, as you can dimension the satellite to be just what's needed.

So yes, this can mean more cluttering of the orbits, and more space debris. CIMR is so big that ESA schedules a controlled re-entry after her job is dine, after about 7-8 years, I think.

2/

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@anlomedad

But in tbe end one CIMR is a just a drop compared to those big private constellations. I do not know what's the status for regulating those.

@toothFAIRy Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I particularly liked the discussion in "4.2.Tension between Different Mindsets"

(...) professional software engineers believe it is important to follow SE best practices and utilize automated workflows, such as continuous Integration and continuous Delivery (CI/CD), to reduce maintenance burden. As a result, they often explain to scientists that their code submission does not meet the code quality standard and needs refactoring. (...)

lavergnetho ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@toothFAIRy indeed. And also the part where SEs didn't find their contribution to be as obvious to communicate or highlight as those of the scientists (who can present at conferences or write papers).

I am starting on an #OSS project with both scientists and SEs and I am sure the initial discussions will be "interesting" 😅🫣.

Is #OpenSource / #OpenScience -mentoring a thing?

One does not contribute to the development of the research or the software itself, but one helps others that don't know how this is done with the Open'ing aspects.

Of course, I know that there are several online resources for learning, but what beats a mentor who dedicates some if his/her time?

#IWantYouToBeMyOpenSourceMentor 😅

@pyOpenSci @scientific_python @turingway ?

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

👀

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

Well I guess it is fair, yes. Beginners will first contribute to existing projects, learn by doing under the mentoring of the project maintainer, and off they go.

But that can be intimidating. And in our case, the team and I need to get started on a brand new own #OSS project, and the learning curve is steep.

Hence the need for mentoring, if that's a thing.

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

And thank you pointing me at #outreachy. It does not apply for me, but it seems like a great project.

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

Thanks Adam! The @osgeo mentorship programme, albeit way too ambitious for me at this stage already has some good description of what they are looking for in #OSS, including actual community contribution (guidelines, governance, ...)

I am aware mentorship like consultancy has a cost, and I am not against the idea.

lavergnetho OP ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@meejah Interesting. There might be a niche to exploit there for research scientists working in bigger institutions.

For bigger projects, we have to write grant proposals (to the EU, to Space Agencies,...) to carry out our research, and these often involve several institutes. We sometimes take in board partners to do project management or communication. So why not a partner/consultant for the #OpenScience or #OSS aspects...

IF you want a flight ban that's MEANINGFUL, do this

  • 4 hours by train, not 2.5 hours

  • apply to ALL flights, inc. transfers and private jets

  • turn connecting flights into connecting trains with guaranteed passenger rights in case of delay

Anything LESS than that and it's gesture politics

lavergnetho ,
@lavergnetho@fediscience.org avatar

@jon @WhiteCatTamer I had no idea that CDG was the reference TGV station and not Paris Montparnasse. It does only make sort-of sense for connecting flights. But who would take the train to CDG to get to Paris?

Are the emissions created for leisure travel ethical?

Tourism accounts for 8-10% of global emissions. The CO2 emissions from tourism activities will last in the atmosphere for 300 to 1,000 years.

Until such time as we have decarbonised the entire supply chain are these emissions ethical?

I know what you mean 😐 .

First, the satellite is designed to help the people and economic activities in the Arctic regions. It will help day-to-day services like weather forecasting (including winds, temperature, waves, sea ice, etc...). Safety at sea.

CIMR can also measure climate change, and this can bring anxiety. But it is important to monitor if our actions have an effect (evidence-based policies). When they have, this might bring hope?

@natematias Yes. But sometimes you do your utmost to tell your users how hard measurement is, you provide calibration and uncertainties, and they just ignore you and call your data "the truth". More often than not, users are not ready for the truth, namely the measurement uncertainties.
