Xi is pushing climate, study shows

Enabling climate acceleration are economic sectors such as land use, China coal, Saudi Aramco, Coal India, Gazprom (Russia), National Iranian Oil — in that order.
Since 2021, China coal sends more carbon in the air than NATO equities and Arab states combined. The China coal sector is increasing capacity and is delivering 12.7 GtCOe in 2024.

Not to mention they're installing more solar than the rest of the world combined. They're definitely putting effort into transitioning.

    jonne ,

All of those things already exist. Typically it's just a Plex server running on a cloud service.

    jonne ,

This has been my theory of his continued popularity. He takes every side of every issue, that way anyone can be targeted with ads that match their beliefs.

It's not even a conscious choice by him, it's just the way real estate salespeople work, they'll say whatever it takes to close the deal, there's no need to be consistent from one prospective buyer to the next.

Prosecutors say Alec Baldwin was ‘engaged in horseplay’ with gun before fatal shooting ( www.theguardian.com )

Fewer than three weeks before actor Alec Baldwin is due to go on trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, prosecutors have said that he “engaged in horseplay with the revolver”, including firing a blank round at a crew member on the set of Rust before the tragic accident occurred....

    jonne ,

Yeah, you would think you could just change the chambers and bullets so only a certain standard of blanks would fit in it, although I guess those guns would become more expensive than the real mass produced ones.

Either way, this is all the result of Baldwin as executive producer cheaping out on every aspect of this shoot, causing this to happen.

    jonne ,

When I rented I only had street parking. In that situation an electric car is just another thing to manage. If you've got a garage to park in, sure, even with a basic 220V outlet.

    jonne ,

That's probably the least worst thing any member of the GOP has ever done.

    jonne ,

There was no primary this year. The democrats managed to cancel them in a bunch of states even though Biden would've easily sailed through against the democratic candidates (uncommitted beat both of them combined where that was an option).

    jonne ,

I mean, I know this specific investigation is in bad faith, but it was pretty widely known something was going to go down in DC and the Capitol Police definitely dropped the ball on this one (among other law enforcement agencies).

Democrats should really be the ones investigating this but for whatever reason they'd rather run cover for the organisation that almost got them killed through incompetence, negligence or worse.

    jonne ,

That's what I was including as an option within 'or worse', but I haven't seen any evidence of it (mostly because the democrats didn't seem to be interested in investigating this when they had both chambers).

    jonne ,

Yeah, I'm sure there was no way to either pressure Sinema and/or replace the parlementarian when Congress had the chance to do this.

‘No one has any idea’ how many Israeli hostages are alive, says Hamas official ( www.theguardian.com )

A senior Hamas official has said the group does not know how many of the Israeli hostages it is holding in Gaza are still alive, as Israeli and Hamas sources set out positions that could undermine the possibility of an imminent ceasefire deal....

    jonne ,

Hamas moved away from any kind of digital communication, doing everything in person instead. With how Gaza is now, there's no real way to coordinate stuff like that. They're keeping communications at a minimum to avoid tipping off the IDF.

    jonne ,

Yeah, but even before that they weren't using phone communications, which is how they were able to surprise the IDF on Oct 7.

    jonne ,

Oh great, even the 'liberal' judges are enemies of labour.

    jonne ,

I mean, it works for me. But I'm not one of those people that posts on it, recruiters just contact me on it and sometimes they have jobs that are actually relevant.

    jonne ,

The subreddit making fun of them was called r/linkedinlunatics , and I always felt that was appropriate.

    jonne ,

But in order to get the money for those programs, especially if their effect is to lower the workload for police, you should get the money from the police budget, otherwise it's just wasted money. Are you just going to keep giving the NYPD a billion dollars a year to do nothing?

    jonne ,

Yeah, I'd be all for them doing it if we weren't talking about an infectious disease.

    jonne ,

They had such a good reputation before all this, such a shame.

    jonne ,

Yeah, it's ridiculous that they're claiming anyone would drive in from New Jersey to go to a diner in Manhattan.

The Curious Case Of The Underselling Arena Tours ( www.stereogum.com )

“Who can afford to go to multiple shows?” says the anonymous tour manager. “Two tickets to a show, you’re talking probably about $200 with fees and everything. You go to a meal around the show, you’re talking at least $100 or $200 for a nice dinner. Then you got parking and babysitters, then you add the VIP stuff to...

    jonne ,

Yep, there's a long internet post from the late 90s by Courtney Love that lays it all out. The labels make all the money from record sales and it wasn't rare for artists to end up owing the label money after making a record.

    jonne ,

Yeah, I know the artist said some other bullshit to justify this choice, but to me it just looks like the blood their wealth was built on.

'Becoming a totalitarian state': UK judge on why he quit Hong Kong court ( www.bbc.com )

A high-profile British judge who resigned from Hong Kong’s highest court last week has warned the city is “slowly becoming a totalitarian state” and judges are being compromised by an “impossible political environment created by China”....

    jonne ,

Yeah, did he really think that the judiciary would stay independent after the Chinese decided they'd be the ones vetting which candidates could run for office?

    jonne ,

I'm guessing that's one way to try to get around the Russian anti-gay laws.

Israel rescues 4 hostages taken in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, and 210 Palestinians are reported killed ( apnews.com )

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel on Saturday carried out its largest hostage rescue operation since the latest war with Hamas began, taking four to safety out of central Gaza amid the military’s heavy air and ground assault. At least 210 dead Palestinians, including children, were brought to local hospitals, a health...

    jonne ,

Looks like this was the real reason for building the pier.

    jonne ,

If a cease-fire with a prisoner exchange was literally on the table but rejected by Israel, I'd pick the option where a bunch of innocent blood isn't spilled to secure a release.

    jonne ,

Sounds better than whatever the fuck is happening now, yeah.

    jonne ,

He was basically one of Trump's reply guys when he was still on Twitter. Whenever Trump posted he was right under there with his take, and it gave off very resistance lib vibes.

    jonne ,

Oh no, there's communists involved in my free global collaborative software project!

    jonne ,

The remedy is impeachment, so I'm pretty sure that means 60 senators need to vote to remove her, which isn't happening anytime soon.

    jonne ,

Yeah, if there's one thing you can count on it's the left fracturing and conservatives having class solidarity.

    jonne ,

No shit, that's why we're calling it a genocide.

    jonne ,

Yep, even if he ends up in prison by some miracle.

    jonne ,

Yeah, but a presidential candidate will have security. A small town mayor would not.

    jonne ,

Not if you push out the people living there, which has been how Israel has historically done it.

    jonne ,

Yeah, I've got a petrol car, and now that I've got my own house I don't think I'd gotten into a situation where an electric car wouldn't have covered my needs just as well.

Obviously it was different when I was renting and stuck off street parking, but for anyone that has a garage, having an electric car and just plugging it in overnight covers pretty much everything, with maybe the odd public charging on a road trip.

    jonne ,

Realistically, isn't that really the point where he actually faces any consequences?

    jonne , (edited )

The hush money one is the first one to actually go to trial, so it's mostly that. The documents case is basically suppressed until they can somehow get rid of this judge, and the other 2 cases are also being held up in places.

The hush money case isn't likely to put him in prison though, I don't think there's any precedent of a politician going to prison for that. And of course there's going to be appeals that can easily push it until past November.

    jonne ,

By 'this one', I meant the hush money case. I agree that the documents case is the most serious one (and also deliciously ironic given his 2016 criticism of Hillary's classified emails).

    jonne ,

I edited it because it was ambiguous, no need to apologise.

    jonne ,

You think insurance (investigations + collecting payments + paying out claims + profit) would be cheaper than a civilian oversight board (investigations)?

Explain that one to me please. It's this sort of thinking that causes the US to pay 3 times more for health care than anyone else.

    jonne , (edited )

The money for insurance would come out of department budgets or police officer wages, which is basically government money again (you can bet those would be adjusted for the extra insurance cost).

    jonne ,

It is a colony. The King of England can just fire the Prime Minister any time he likes.

    jonne ,

I'm sure they'll find someone. You only need to have one in the state.

    jonne ,

Because their annual budget is over a billion dollars and rising. You can't spend this all on just payroll and cop cars.

    jonne ,

Yep, 'he says what we're all thinking!'.
