If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

We can't allow the US to get off of fossil fuels... unless US billionaires win! 🤡

@CelloMomOnCars Amen! Six friends, all in their 60s, never cyclists since they were not-yet-teens, are now doing multiple bike holidays each year as a group and even entering cycling events. Plus a lot of weekend cafe rides. All because of ebikes. Transformational!

REMINDER FOR AMERICANS:

The US Constitution and common law are rooted in pre-18th century English legal jurisprudence and traditions.

And the "presidential immunity" bullshit is an attempt to rewind the clock to before 1649, when Parliament got fed up with the King's bullshit, put him on trial, and beheaded him.

Y'all: Trump wants to revive the divine right of kings.

You know who pulled the German equivalent of that stunt? Hitler.

(I will summarily block anyone who raises Godwin's law.)

@cstross doesn't the monarch retain legal immunities to this day? the Equalities Act was a fairly high profile example.

jbenjamint ,
@jbenjamint@mastodon.scot avatar

@cstross to that point, the US president having immunities from criminal law isn't without modern precedent? Charles I's claim was that parliament couldn't impeach him.

Today I learned that line, bar, area, and pie charts were all invented by the same person, a Scottish secret agent called Playfair who masterminded the covert sabotage of France’s currency. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Playfair

@samuel_wade I mean, could there be a better Wikipedia bio...
> He was in turn a millwright, engineer, draftsman, accountant, inventor, silversmith, merchant, investment broker, economist, statistician, pamphleteer, translator, publicist, land speculator, convict, banker, ardent royalist, editor, blackmailer and journalist.

His nephew went on to build the college I studied in, where the fabulous Playfair Library is.

OTD, 25 March, 1998, Mike Cameron served his one day suspension for having worn a Pepsi shirt to Coke Education Day the previous Friday at Greenbrier High School in Evans, Georgia.

The principal, Gloria Hamilton, spent the day explaining to the local, national and international media that he wasn't suspended for wearing a Pepsi shirt to Coke day, but for trying to ruin the school picture, in which the entire student body were lined up to spell out the word "COKE". @histodons

"Heat pumps that fit in an apartment window could make a big impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change"

@CelloMomOnCars had two inspections for heat pump installations in our pre-1860 stone cottage. No problem with the heat pump per se and no problem with the already sizeable radiators: main issue is the contractors want to completely replace the microbore pipe work .

Means ripping out the floor and bathrooms. In total we're looking at about 4x the cost of a replacement oil boiler to get a heat pump. We'll probably bite the bullet and do some version of replacement, but it's a huge disincentive
