    It's one of the least nazi ones of his, so good choice as far as Hamsun goes. I personally think Orwell did it better in Down and Out in Paris and London, though.

    And the "trucks", that are also getting bigger and bigger, are just SUVs "for men" now. My BIL has the little bed on his covered most of the time, so it's more like a super-sized glove box in the back for your groceries.

    I read something about a switch from the 90% mindset to the 100% mindset when getting a car somewhere, and I think a lot about that, also regarding Norway. When people count in every possible thing they can imagine using a car for when getting one, of course you'll end up with these monsters, and Norway's on its way.

    @eivind@fribygda.no avatar

    @dillyd Yeah, there's definitely something psychological about how the costs are spread out on ownership vs. renting and using other means of transportation. We don't have a car and have started getting rentals for weekend getaways every now and then since they became more available from the app-based companies, and I know we can do a lot of that for the price of owning a car, but it feels so expensive and extravagant.

    OTD, in 1991, women in the canton Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland were for the first time allowed to vote in the local elections, the Landsgemeinde, 20 years after having won the same right on a national level. The then all-male Landsgemeine had vote against giving that right to women the year before, but were overruled by the federal court. @histodons

    OTD, 1 April, 1950, Aftenposten, the largest daily newspaper in Norway, announced on its front page that the government wine outlet had bought a large quantity of good, French wine, but had unfortunately run out of bottles so they were forced to sell it off at giveaway prices to whoever showed up with their own containers. #NorwayFacts @histodons

    OTD, 25 March, 1998, Mike Cameron served his one day suspension for having worn a Pepsi shirt to Coke Education Day the previous Friday at Greenbrier High School in Evans, Georgia.

    The principal, Gloria Hamilton, spent the day explaining to the local, national and international media that he wasn't suspended for wearing a Pepsi shirt to Coke day, but for trying to ruin the school picture, in which the entire student body were lined up to spell out the word "COKE". @histodons

    @amici An early example of brands throwing money around to get into schools and start their indoctrination early. (Coke HQ is not far away from Evans, in Atlanta, so was probably a local thing.) @histodons

    I have a 6th-grade (13 years old) student who is at grade level in his reading and does well in English class, but feels unmotivated to read on his own. The only two series he's really gotten into are and Percy Jackson.

    Since reading is clearly not a problem for him, I think it's just a matter of finding something new along the fantasy-mythology lines that would appeal to him. Any leads? @bookstodon

    Reading in the foreword to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that Verne originally envisioned Captain Nemo as a Polish noble on an underwater campaign of vengeance against the Russian Empire that'd killed his entire family, but that this version was pronounced unprintable by his publisher for political reasons. @bookstodon

    Just finished “#Evicted: #Poverty and Profit in the #American City,” by Matthew Desmond

    He says it’s not his intent to unduly villainize any particular group, and I believe him. But it brought back a lot of memories from my chaotic youth in trailer parks and I’m pretty ready to hate some fucking landlords

    So much injustice is highlighted in that book. What really stuck with me was the class/race separated rental market where people of the "right" demographic pay the same rent for a nice flat as someone from the "wrong" one pay for an absolute dump in a different part of town.

    In 1992, Yoshi Hattori, a 16-y.o. Japanese exchange student in Baton Rouge, was shot dead when he approached the wrong house looking for a Halloween party. This caused a public uproar in Japan and national discussion about US gun culture. The Japanese Ministry of Transportation even prepared a US survival guide/phrase book with coloquial English phrases such as "Stick 'em up!," "Back off!," "Get lost!," and the infamous "Freeze!", which it was thought Yoshi had failed to understand. @histodons
