Me: So when I went to take my bath

Greg: Yeah

Me: I was taking off my clothes and

Greg: Awwww yeah!

Me: Shut up - I took off my bra

Greg: HOO HOO

Me: And KALE fell out, actual kale

Greg:

Me: I had KALE CHIPS in my bra, apparently for HOURS, since lunch, I had no freaking clue

Greg: That's....great

I really believe one of the best skills I ever conditioned into the kids is their willingness to say no to me. As in, if you can say no to your unfailingly charming mother begging you to watch an obviously deeply intellectual shark movie ("It's in FRENCH! The shark will probably wear a beret and quote Sartre"), if you can handle her crushed, broken heart, then I feel like you can say no to a lot of uncomfortable stuff that happens in life. And they really have. I've heard some stories.

I’m trying to go for walks in the evening, and dragging Greg along whenever I can. Here he is just now when I asked him to stand next to stuff for scale. 😂

I’m about to turn 50 and I keep thinking about what I didn’t get done and wish I’d accomplished. The spectre of two decades of chronic illness just looms over the whole mental exercise, like a ghoul. Messes with my head. I try to shake it off, to see the good stuff.

Like how when I was 21 years old, somehow I married the exact right person.

A man in a green t-shirt hugs a tree on a city street, the trunk is huge and would probably require at least three if not four people to reach all the way around it.

This probably sounds weird but I love night rain in the spring and fall. They are magic times in the PNW. The temp is mild enough you can leave your windows open, and the city is asleep and finally quiet, so you can really hear the soft beat of the drops hit the streets, the sidewalks - I like to imagine I can even hear it in the trees. It’s the life of this place, why everything is so green. It’s also great background for reading (I’m on Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy atm). 🌧️📖🌲

Sitting at my desk just now tidying up and outside I see a woman runner, totally decked out, Air Pods, Nikes, fancy long distance running vest, stop in mid stride and suddenly look down, then look around, then down again. I’m thinking is she okay? Did she hurt her leg or something? I start to stand up as she basically collapses to the sidewalk on her knees, and I realize she’s TAKING A PHOTO OF A SNAIL.

I mean I don’t know her but she is clearly a quality individual with excellent priorities.

Got a haircut and found the rarest of unicorns: a stylist who didn’t make me talk! She sat me down, asked what I wanted, then artfully performed the minimum amount of conversation for someone about to hack away a third of my hair. Like just enough to laugh a little, so I feel safe, but then, when I stopped talking, she just focused on her work and let me sit there. Oh, you beautiful hair mistress, I’ve finally found you. May the gods bless you.

Also this nifty old jalopy was parked out front!

The old car from the side, there's a spare tire (with lime green wheels and whitewall tires!), and two doors with round metal handles.
Rear of car, with a rack on the back of some kind? Not sure what you'd do with that, maybe it was for luggage?

I can't wait to see this! I watched Reading Rainbow as a kid, and then later would watch it as a teen after my high school classes, just to relax and feel good about the world. I know a lot of folks feel lovely and warm about this show, I'm so happy they're doing a documentary on it.

Our electric tea kettle has died after just a few weeks - sprung a leak. This is our third kettle THIS YEAR. Manufacturing is basically crap now, I know, but I really, really need my tea. I gotta solve this. I'm thinking a stovetop kettle? But we have an induction stove.

Any lovers have a favorite teapot/kettle that works on an induction stove?

(feel free to boost)

I can’t handle much Instagram but I logged on for a bit tonight and it was so cool to see so many guys knitting and crocheting! White, BIPOC, straight, queer, there was an amazing and beautiful variety of menfolk doing the fiber crafts and proudly showing off their yarn-y makes, I love it! :) 🧶

A post just went by dealing with world geographical details and as I was hitting "page down" all I saw fly past was a colorful graph and then what I thought was the phrase:

"HOBBITABLE LAND."

And there is nothing remotely rational about this but my heart still flipped over really fast, this micro-second of hope that someone with means had the brilliant idea of turning some huge swath of land into burrow houses and and bare-footed farms with giant pumpkins, and here was their prospectus.

Dinner conversation was me and Jupiter coming up with responses for someone seeing their scars and asking about their (gender affirming) top surgery. I laughed so hard - my favorite was, “Shark attack - the shark got one, and we had to remove the other so I’d stop swimming crooked”.

Next favorites: “I fought ninjas and this was all they took,” and finally, “Lost a bet with the Devil, turns out I’m terrible on the fiddle.”

They also said I should share these tips: https://eilloh.net/topsurgery/

HOLY CRAP - we're standing outside taking photos and looking at the sun (SAFELY! with filters and glasses and special apps!) and housemate gets this photo and then ZOOMS IN - there's a PARACHUTER!

Zoom in right below the sun and you'll see them! We're in Eugene, Oregon, which one of you is photo bombing the eclipse?? :D

The photo zoomed in, showing a bright yellow sun and the tiny person in the parachute right below.

I walked past my window just now, saw a star, and noted it was twinkling. Cool! Then I stopped….hold on, it’s REALLY TWINKLING. I stared at it and swore I could see it flashing colors. Suspicious, I went to find my binoculars, thinking this must be a drone someone has parked up high. Nope, it IS a star! It’s Sirius! And apparently it does this! Refraction can split starlight into the colors of the rainbow, and Sirius is so bright that it appears to flash a rainbow. WOW! It’s beautiful! 🌈

I'm in the garden, a guy just pulled up in a minivan and gets out, opens up the back, and then walks directly into the garden and starts picking up the wood stumps lining the path. I'm sitting quietly in a chair against the house and I said, "What are you doing?" Totally startled him (I'm pleased that despite my size I can still camouflage effectively to fight evil). He said, his imagination clearly absent, "Oh, I'm just taking these," and I said no he wasn't, and he dropped them and left. WTF?

hollie OP ,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@dillyd They're so clearly doing a thing, it's not like leftover wood by the side of the road or something. So weird!

A couple years ago I was browsing around a plant shop and the owner points and says, “These are very hot right now, we can’t keep them in.” I was laughing that he thinks this sales pitch is going to work. I joked, “It doesn’t look like much, does it do anything besides sit there?” He said it has these gorgeous flowers but they only come once a year, if you’re lucky. Damn, that got me. Now I wanted to see the mystery blooms. He’s right, they’re lovely.

I’ve started doing daily garden sits, and while I loathe the ever-present sound of cars, even this small exposure to nature is nice. Met this ladybug. She says hello.

Been feeling waves of real grief lately around not being able to get outdoors the way I need to (like a fish out of water, I’m suffocating slowly over years). With the lack of sailing now, and no hiking, it gets very tough (someone come take me to an easy trail and not mind when I spend half the trip photographing lichen….).

Red ladybug on a finger, wings outspread, in the split second before taking flight.

Listening to A Prayer for the Crown-Shy ( versions of both books are wonderful). I just got to the part where Dex and Mosscap are heading to Dex's family's house and Dex is explaining their family, and I'm just melting with happiness at how normalized it all is. No spoilers. Just read it. :)

Humble Bundle has a bundle of books on graphic design and being an artist, 23 books for (min) $25. I just bought the bundle and they look really good, I'm skimming through them now and very happy I got this. Would recommend!

This bundle benefits the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, "dedicated to strengthening the book industry by supporting the people who work in bookstores and comics shops."

I was looking at figure drawing videos and YouTube's algorithm put this video in front of me, and I was confused as to why, but then intrigued (A&P was one of my favorite subjects and I'm not squeamish) and I watched it, and...it's actually pretty fascinating!

There is no gore or anything. If you dig medical mysteries/problems and history, you'd probably enjoy it. The solution is very clever.
