It's true! You can get the brand-new audiobook edition of "Shards" for just $4. That's over seven hours of spine-tingling speculative fiction for way less than a dollar per-hour. Grab it now before I come to my senses and start charging what it's actually worth! 🎧🙂👍

Listening to the audiobook of Andy Serkis reading The Fellowship of the Ring is actually becoming a chore! It’s been decades since I originally read the actual book and I’d forgotten all about the songs throughout. Hate to leave a book unfinished though so I’ll plough through the last 3 hours. Then decide whether I can bear The Two Towers and The Return of the King during my post-op recovery when I won’t be able to read anything.

I finished: Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang

While I enjoyed the romance and the politics, I didn't connect to the cooking or the sci-fi.

Even before the cooking turned grotesque, it didn't speak in a language I understood, and when I understood it felt blunt.

Same thing for the science, it didn't seem to add up in any meaningful way. It's there as setting.

I'd recommend reading The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem.

It tackles the same subject but it a more convincing way. Though it doesn't deal as much with issues of race, feminism and lgbtq.

#Currentlyreading Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne

A fellow social worker I knew from grad school shared this book on her Instagram story and recommended it. I was on a hold list for the ebook at my local library for weeks, but now, I have it. I’m also listening to the #audiobook read by the author.

I find I can't stomach most fiction anymore, especially anything written since about 1990. But Vanessa Chan's "The Storm We Made" is a powerful exception. Minutely and lovingly observed and the emotional punches it delivers are all earned and deserved.

It's set in #Malaysia in the 1930s during the British colonial period (when it was still called "Malaya") and the #Japanese wartime occupation of the 1940s, and its principal characters are Malay and Japanese. So right away that sets it apart from anything I've ever read before.

What's more, most of the principal characters from whose points of view we see the story are women and girls.

It is so rare, in #English language fiction, to have a glimpse into the dynamics of #Colonization when it's not practiced by a Western state.

The #Audiobook is beautifully narrated by Samantha Tan, a woman of #Asian ancestry.

Would love to hear #TootSEA thoughts on this book.

Reminder that if you want to hear me perform the voice of a 6'5" mountain man, I do that in "Scar" by Kelsie Calloway. In real life I'm a tiny woman! But I also have opera training, and that makes all the difference when I'm voicing burly men. 💪

You can hear him make his first appearance a the end of the attached sample.

Link at end, There are some fantastic podcast audiobooks out there. Better still, these are free, and you don't need a subscription! Just put the RSS feed into your favorite podcast app. I listen to more audio fiction than watch shows on streaming because a lot of these indie creators are trying new things and I love exploring! To get you started, here's a few collections https://www.theend.fyi/collections @bookstodon #Books #Audiobooks @audiobooks

weirdwriter OP ,

3 more links are below! Anytime! If you wanna check out some featured stuff by the End creator, here is the featured page, but this website tracks fiction podcasts that either start new seasons or ended seasons or ended shows, like, completed shows. https://www.theend.fyi/recommended-audio-fiction

And if you are looking for more podcast audiobook type stuff, not audio dramas, but narrations of work, also check out the below category on the audio dramas directory. Trust me, this has saved me some credits on Audible!

And lastly, this is the only nonfiction podcast audiobook directory I know of, as of right now.

While I stopped being a young adult around the time I purchased glasses in order to be able to see small things up close, I am the perfect audience member for @pluralistic's brilliant "Little Brother".

Half "Nineteen Eighty-Four", half introduction to privacy and cryptography, half hacker manifesto, half teen romance, half historical account, one quarter nostalgia hit and five quarters thrilling adventure well read by Kirby Heyborne.

Wil Wheaton brings another thrilling @pluralistic book to life: "Red Team Blues".

As with previous books, the pleasure of hearing details of the specialised familiar both in the essential and cursory is balanced by the haunting anticipation of the inevitable savage beating of the protagonist for whom we've become fond.

Looking forward to episodes two - "The Bezel" - and three of the Marty Hench saga.
