I bet he uses a CPU with proprietary architecture too

Don't be pedantic. It's obvious the OP is referring to the client portion of Gmail, not the service portion.

hellofriend ,

I prefer individual questions. More searchable that way. Should have mandatory formatting to ensure the question is summarized in the title. Weekly discussion threads make it more difficult to find answers to your questions if someone has had the same question in the past.

Happen to know anything about how windowed games work with a tiling manager? I often stream a buddy's Elden Ring gameplay while playing myself, but having only one screen means I have to have the Discord popout in the top corner and the gameplay in windowed.

hellofriend ,

Yeah, I've saved this post in case I ever manage to pester my friends into ditching Windows

hellofriend ,

He did manage to have xfce-panels disappear once though.

Tbf even I've done this.

hellofriend ,

The older I get, the more I realize that tech bros have existed in some way or another for as long as we've lived.

hellofriend ,

When I quit smoking I holed myself up in a dark room with provisions to last a week. It was hell but it worked.

hellofriend ,

Hyper bitchass comment

hellofriend ,

Being angry at the world.

hellofriend ,

Maybe if it's like doing the washing or sweeping the floor or something. For addicts it's just confirmation that they shouldn't try.

hellofriend ,

Both war and environmental catastrophes existed prior to capitalism...

hellofriend ,

Problems that have been created by capitalism

It's literally right there.

If you want Linux apps on your phone, wouldn't you have to have a compat layer a la WINE except that it's for x86->ARM rather than Windows->Linux? Wouldn't that make using Linux apps unattractive due to the overhead slowing them down? Plus, wouldn't devs have to implement a mobile mode for GUI apps for this to be a good UX? Not trying to bash the idea, just curious about how it would practically work.

I wonder if there's an overlap with COVID affected species. Is it possible for COVID to have made mammalian species more susceptible to illness?

hellofriend ,

Higher mortality rate generally means lower transmission since the infected don't live long enough to pass it along. If it mutates to be less fatal then I'll be more worried.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

hellofriend ,

This wouldn't be much of an issue if they didn't regularly abuse their admin/mod status to censor and silence people who dissent with their political beliefs and for example, post things critical of China, Russia, the USSR, socialism, ...

So what you're essentially saying is that these moderators are effectively propagandists/state actors for China, Russia, and so on. I left Reddit to get away from psychic attacks like that, so I'm perfectly happy to defed from the instance. Glad I have the option, too.

What's stopping the wealthy from just up and leaving? They could liquidate their assets and invest in somewhere with tax laws more favourable to them.

hellofriend ,

Anyone who would buy. Unless you're sentimentally attached to something then I doubt you'd have a difficult time selling it. Billionaires own property as investment, not for use. Just sell it to another billionaire and buy property in a country more favourable to you. As for things like cars, collections, yachts, and other such mobile assets, just stick them on a container ship and unpack at your destination.

hellofriend ,

See, what I don't like about this is that if you have the power to confiscate a billionaire's possessions for no other reason that they're a billionaire, then there's absolutely nothing stopping you from turning that power against anyone you don't like. And I'm not talking "you" as in you specifically, or anyone with a sense of morality and ethics, but "you" as in the inevitable exploitative scum that would at some point hold that power.

Now, if the confiscation is contingent on a billionaire commiting a crime then that's another thing, but then the billionaire would actually have to commit a crime. And if you made tax law ironclad then sure, if they break the law then they should have their things confiscated in recompense. But that's assuming that the trial wouldn't be bogged down in court by a billionaire being able to throw money at the problem.

hellofriend ,

No, I'm well aware that it's damaging and I'm not a proponent of the system. You would do well not to make assumptions. My problem is that the people that take power are rarely the ones who will use it with temperance. I see no way that the same laws used to penalize the accumulation of wealth wouldn't be applied to dissidents regardless of class. Rather than having an oligarchy of private citizens, you'll have an oligarchy of people with government powers. At least in the current system there's a degree of separation. What's needed is a way to strengthen the people, not to punish the wealthy. And I have some ideas for that, but I doubt any would be feasible.

hellofriend ,

I'm not entirely certain about that. For instance, on Linux I always have to look up how to create symlinks even though I've been using the OS exclusively for three years. On Windows, it is: Right click -> Create shortcut. It's easier for most people to remember a 2 action process than a console command with multiple options and specific syntax. But of course, this is only one example and doesn't apply to everything. For instance, I have absolutely no trouble remembering mkdir, cp, or rm. I think it's a bit of a mixed bag.

hellofriend ,

Tbh I see this as a problem. For instance, I've been considering going into politics and one of my main concerns is the security of our government's information. Right now the Americans could have a direct line of access to all of our doings simply because we use Windows. Not to mention there's the matter of Recall which, while not implemented in Windows 10, will likely be included when the government switches from Windows 10. That itself is a huge security risk. So the only options are to implement an existing Linux distro or to fork and maintain one specifically for the government. And that would be all well and good if it didn't require retraining every government employee to use Linux.

hellofriend ,

Was a bitch for me to get HOMM3 set up. But in the end I got it working. Would certainly be more plug n play on Windows, but I don't mind a little inconvenience if it means I'm not supporting from fuckass tech bro that wants my data.

hellofriend ,

In order to get my copy of Cyberpunk (GOG) working I ended up running GOG Galaxy via Steam and launching the game from it. Possibly the most ape brained solution to that problem, but if it works it works lol

hellofriend ,

How would a cloud OS even work? Like what would your PC boot in to?

hellofriend ,

Ehh, self reports are unreliable. Get me an objective study and then we'll talk

hellofriend ,

Nah, that's not the issue (nor do I believe in magic bullets, but that's a different matter). See, the issue is that MDMA can't be patented. Anyone can make it so no one pharmacorp can have a 20 year monopoly

hellofriend ,

Big problem is CEOs are paid in stock and are thus incentivized to boost shareholder value at the cost of all else. Prevent CEOs from being paid primarily in stock and it would help. Would it be the be all end all? No, but it's a start.

hellofriend ,

Hate to tell you but authoritarianism isn't endemic to either the left or the right.

hellofriend ,

As someone who can see the flaws in the capitalist model and doesn't agree with it in its current form... This is just silly. In any socioeconomic system there will be limited resources. People will still have to convince those that control the resources to give them the resources. The biggest difference between science in a capitalist system versus in a socialist system is that the end result of the science might benefit the common person more.

For instance: Superfest. Near unbreakable drinking glasses made in Eastern Germany that didn't sell well internationally due to lack of profit potential. Basically, the entire glass industry revolves around the principle that glass can be broken. When your glass breaks, you buy a new one. But if your glass doesn't break then you don't need to buy a new one and therefore you do not. So if everyone buys Superfest then the industry dies since no one needs to buy glass any longer. And this is great for the people, great for the environment, but terrible if you're a profit driven company. But whether it's a state-owned endeavour or a for-profit organization, you'd still need to convince someone to invest in your work.

hellofriend ,

You dog

hellofriend ,

Big cat just a big cat, more at 11

hellofriend ,

Not really, tbh. Cats will sometimes form colonies given enough resources and mothers will help eachother raise young. But you'll never see something like the group predation that lions take part in. Cats are largely more similar to the rest of the felids than they are to lions

hellofriend ,

Nah, it seems pretty accurate to me
