Might as well go all in on casting aside democratic policies right away. No need to procrastinate!

What I think we should all be very concerned about is if they erode institutions, regulations, and the rule of law then they really can go ape (literally) enforcing their insecurities. Forcing women to stay in abusive or unwanted marriages, abortion and birth control restrictions, removing reading material, protecting "different" people from violence? It all goes out the window if they get their way.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

They haven't won yet. Chevron could be the end as we know it but we'll see.

As someone who has purchased gas there several times and once entered a Walmart, I can attest to the fact that Red Deer exists.

Trump furious as he fails to knock out Haley before South Carolina ( news.yahoo.com )

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Donald Trump didn't just want to win in New Hampshire, he wanted to beat Nikki Haley so badly that his sole rival for the Republican presidential nomination would drop out before the next competitive contest in South Carolina a month away....

grabyourmotherskeys ,

And a politically significant percentage of men and women will see that behavior, approve of it, and vote for him. Which is insane.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

The "Russia has more freedom than the US" narrative is almost as confusing to me as the idea that Trump is someone you want to represent you. I know people think this but I just can't understand how they also are able yo navigate the day to day requirements of life.

Like, how do they determine what food to eat? Nothing but Pizza Pops eaten thawed but cold? How do they survive?

grabyourmotherskeys ,

I feel like science should have been able to achieve this by now.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

You have been awarded the key to the city of Halifax.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

Yup, people who object to Hawaiian Pizza for any reason other than "it's not for me" don't really understand food.

I remember feeling like this in junior high. There was this group of athletic dudes who were mind numbingly offensive to everyone. Shoving people, locker stuffing, knocking books out your hand, tripping kids on stairs... Just constant abuse and scorn on anyone not in their group. And these guys were popular. I won't say every girl liked them because there were lots of smart girls. But a lot of girls liked them and guys thought they were cool, etc. It blew my mind that we weren't all ostracizing them for being obnoxious, abusive bullies.

It was junior high. I get it. I moved on.

But Trump's success brings that feeling back. There's no logic to it. It's a creepy mammalian subconscious need to stay on the good side of the bully so you don't end up targeted. Or maybe you see someone acting like you would like to act but can't get away with it.

I have no idea but I blows my mind every time I think about and I know it's what is wrong with the world. No question about that.

People like that do not think long term. Otherwise, they woukd realize change is inevitable and unstoppable. This change might not be what they want or what any of us want (robot apocoloypse comes to mind) but its coming.

Note: investing does not count as long term thinking here. I'm talking about a social and political future.

"Mystery Cuts" on Trump's Hand Spark Speculation About His Declining Health ( www.msn.com )

A photo of Trump emerging from Trump Tower, heading towards his E. Jean Carroll defamation trial, has sparked speculation over mysterious wounds appearing on Trump's hand. The photo was flagged by Drudge Report who flagged the red marks as "mystery cuts on his fingers." Drudge Report linked to Daily Mail which published the...

I'll float some possible ideas:

  • I'm totally strong enough to unstick my wet hand from this freezing metal railing (noone had warm water but rumour has it there's another tape he doesn't want coming out now)

  • If I wear gloves I'll appear weak. Suffers frostbite. Has no idea because he has peripheral neuropathy from dementia from the sugar diabetes.

  • Real theory? He heard Hitler and the boys didn't bother with British Sudafed. They went all in on crystal meth. They say fascism burns itself out but a little amphetamine really keeps the magic alive. Yes, Trump spent a lot of time scratching one hand with the other over and over. A lifetime of narcissism keeps him from scratching his face, but for how long!

I think it's important to remember that he could care less if nothing works so when say replace, what he might actually do is just remove.

He could cripple the federal government and just not replace people.

Eventually, they will get replaced but he could do a ton of damage by removing any politically appointed officials, auctioning off those positions to business interests, and having them fire everyone they can (or will, really, becuase I think you'd be going to court over this).

grabyourmotherskeys ,

Crap, I meant to write that, thank you... Was going for "could not care less".

grabyourmotherskeys ,

You can they really care... about making life harder for people.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

What really bothers me is if his supporters even hear of this at all it will be a wish fulfillment fantasy about telling your boss to go to hell when you rage quit your job (at an emotional level) and they will imagine Trump cooly dropping burn after burn on the judge before mic dropping, leaving everyone thinking Trump (who they have attached their ego to) is the coolest guy ever and the judge is a loser.

That's what is really sad. That, and the fact that they get to vote.

Wouldn't snowbirds just load up before leaving our socialist paradise for the winter?

I have a hunch it's them telling all their Bridge partners about how they access medication that contributed to popular support for this. :)

As a developer, I am absolutely amazed that any of this (all the software you are using, all of it) even works a little. So: no.

I independently came up with "federation" (as in thought of it but not exactly this, and was building on others work) as the basis for a masters thesis in the early 2000s but left the program to get a job so never saw it through.

So, no, I am not annoyed. I am amazed, grateful, impressed, and humbled but I am not annoyed.

Had a blast playing DND Young Adventurers with no rules

Picked up the young adventurer books thinking that they had simpler kid rules, but I guess they have no rules (you're supposed to just be motivated to buy a starter set or something). So I played with my niece (8) and nephew (5) without any rules and they LOVED it. Right after our first short adventure they wanted to play again....

grabyourmotherskeys ,

I have a core group of friends that I grew up with and we all loved role playing games. After using every gaming system you could (late 80s) we just knew how it worked. We'd play any scenario or setting with our common understanding a couple d10 and some notes for inventory and special abilities (or disabilities). So much fun. :)

Boardroom:

  • people will like coming into the office if we create a fun atmosphere
  • like a party!
  • we can't have an actual party
  • ok, how about a DJ

HR, legal, and so on: they can go in the parking lot.

Weeks later an admin is told to book a DJ, I don't care what it costs but they have to work in the parking lot.

DJ has to be set up in the parking lot but will only do it if they can be there all day otherwise too much set up and take down.

Ok, if they have to be here I want them playing all the time. Otherwise, we are wasting money.

Contract shows up with "daily, renewed every month unless 30 days written notice."

And so on.

gf wants total silence

It's a sunny day, we're outside, good mood, drinking a coffee. I try to strike a conversation, my gf says its too early for philosophical discussions. I tell her we can instead talk about whatever she feels like. She says she doesn't want to talk about anything. We weirdly sit in silence for a while. I tell her it's weird to me,...

grabyourmotherskeys ,

Don't fight over things like this. Seek to understand. Respect her. Ask yourself how you would want her to react if you told her you needed some time in silence.

This is something you should discuss with her in a calm way, after this moment has passed. What if you had done as she asked? Maybe you would have a better conversation if you took that time to think about what she wanted and why. Not from your perspective, from hers.

This isn't a man/woman or relationship issue. This is the kind of thing you'll encounter over and over. They are asking you to put their need for silence over your need for interaction. If, over the course of several instances if this, you decide you can't spend your time with a person who doesn't love chatting as much as you, that is a legit reason to go your separate ways and no hard feelings. But, really, you're going to deal with countless things like this in all your relationships (not just romantic). You have to balance the incompatible aspects with the compatible. Nobody is perfect and you can learn things about yourself from the incompatibilities. No reason to argue and fight. Just say what you are feeling and try to stay calm and open to hearing their side.

To be fair, I don't think Gym Jordan owns a tie or blazer. I also really don't care. :)

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it's pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

Winter driving and shoulder season driving. Snow, ice, black ice, freezing rain, slush, hydroplaning, driveway clearing, walkway maintenance, windshield scraping, and keeping an emergency kit for breakdowns. Stuff like that.

I used to get my hair cut buy these two dudes that owned a little barber shop and every once in a while some shady looking guy would come in and they'd stop mid haircut and go into the back for however long they were gone for. Eventually, the random dude would leave and I'd get my haircut finished. I was working as a cook so I'd show up on line a Tuesday at 11am. Place would be dead otherwise. I grew up around there and I'd been going for a long time so they weren't worried about me.

One thing that was crazy about this place is the only magazines were like guns and ammo type magazines. In Canada. Highly unusual. This was back when a barber shop was still likely to have a few "gentlemen's magazines" lying around. Not them, just guns. :)
