We (as a community) are never going to learn our lesson with right-wing pundits and bad-faith arguments, are we?

At some point, we’re going to wring our hands right off.

frequentbeef OP ,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@SJohnRoss Sadly, that would require any of them to have a sense of shame or self-awareness, which are pretty antithetical to the whole act.

I'm going to be on Gen Con's Twitch channel tomorrow (June 8) at 10 am Pacific playing the best edition of D&D: 4th!

I miss that edition a lot, actually, and it'll be great to get some time with it again.

I believe the plan is to start the stream off with a discussion about the game and then hopping into adventure.

It's part of the ongoing series Peter Adkison's been doing celebrating the 50th anniversary of D&D, going through all the editions.

Video game developers will never learn that players will end up loathing anything they are made to repeat again and again when trying to get through hard content, will they?

Hard isn’t bad - challenge can be fun. But tedium is a real killer.

frequentbeef OP ,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@SJohnRoss I don’t mind some level of figuring out what to do, but you need to be thoughtful about what is repeated, because it gets old real fast.

frequentbeef OP ,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@SJohnRoss I get that reaction more than I would expect, really…

Just finished Senua’s Saga: and was incredibly disappointed.

We adored the first game, and while this one is gorgeous and has a couple inspired moments, it’s hollow, ineffective, and ultimately tedious in almost all aspects, particularly the gameplay and story, which is pretty damning.

If it tickles your fancy at all, just go play Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade again instead. It’s not even worth playing if you already have Game Pass - it’s just a waste of time.

frequentbeef OP ,
@frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

@SJohnRoss Yeah, we were pretty hyped for it, so it was a huge letdown.

    @LeviKornelsen I really wish they had used the primaris introduction to fix gender issues, but that likely would have made that backlash all the worse at the time.

    Not that the fanbass couldn’t use a flushing or two, mind you…

    @LeviKornelsen Ecological or natural disasters. A major attack (either external or internal) or full-blown war, civil or not. Disease.

    If you're going fantasy, a lot of those have pretty extreme analogs that are still basically the same, but having a god fundamentally chnage (or jsut actually die) hits differently in a fantasy setting.

    @LeviKornelsen Are you adding this to the starter pack document, or releasing another one?

    I browsed through the starter set and they were different than I expected, but quite fun. It was an interesting exercise to think about the fantasy races that are typically mapped to these tropes and then thinking of how things would play out when that is shaken up or inverted.

    I also love seeing the connection points when tropes become building blocks.

    frequentbeef ,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen Yeah, that's part of the fun I had in D&D 4th edition in particular, figuring out how different power sources and different classes were expressed in the different default cultures. Or in Vampire, looking at how different clans affect various tropes within them…

    Thinking about it now, the World of Darkness probably deeply influenced me (for good or ill) with the “pick from 2+ lists of archetypes/tropes/factions and shake well.”

    When you fully accept that gamers are largely fundamentally competent at having a good time roleplaying, you realize that most design objectives OTHER THAN "save people work" and "get them excited" can be managed with a box of parts and a discussion of how to assemble them.

    But those two, hoo boy.

    frequentbeef ,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen @ludopolitics There is definitely a category of games that are more fun to talk about than play, generally.

    I am suddenly possessed by a burning, irrational desire for a Vampire: The Masquerade skirmish miniatures combat game.

    I don't even know where this ludicrous urge is coming from. I think I just had some weird vision of little plastic kits for different clans and the fact that it would be so wildly out of place is part of why I think I would love it so much.

    frequentbeef OP ,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    My meandering thought process was lamenting the mental burden of playing RPGs and appreciating how sustainable the minis hobby is through solo activities and then that got me thinking about how vibrantly distinct factions are so essential to minis games and that leapt to “World of Darkness and L5R have such strong factions" and now we're here, where I want skirmish-level minis games for two of the most classic big narrative-focused RPGs.

    I think the perverse paradox is part of the appeal.

    The Bundle of Holding has a “Fiasco Classic" bundle that also includes a ton of other great games from Bully Pulpit and Jason Morningstar, like my personal favorite Caroline Death Crawl and the acclaimed The Skeletons.

    Fiasco is a classic for a reason and it got a new edition with cards and other tools, but the original is still great.

    I highly recommend this bundle for anyeon who doesn't have Fiasco or wants to try out some modern story & LARP games.

    With the new movies, we are re-entering the era where loads of people defend Dune by denying that it's got a White Savior narrative in it, or imperialistic and colonialist themes, or otherwise pretending it doesn't deal in seriously fucked up shit.

    And now I need to resist the urge to shake them and yell "It does! Of course it does! It deals in those to say some shit about them! DID YOU MISS THE FUCKING POINT?"

    frequentbeef ,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen if you haven’t seen it, the new movie makes some changes to try to tackle those elements a bit more head-on, so I’d say that should be clearer.

    But at our screening we had some random stranger lean over and exclaim “I have not idea what’s going on!” so I’ve given up all hope.

    frequentbeef ,
    @frequentbeef@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen yeah, part 2 steers pretty headlong into “chosen one” and savior stories, though I haven’t decided if it is fully successful, it is a nice attempt with some side benefit from the changes.

    Huge news: the publisher implemented an extensive cultural consultation program in conjunction with the Asians Represent podcast (who did a fantastic series reading through the game). https://www.legendofthefiverings.com/asians-represent/

    There's a wonderful deep dive into the thought process and procedure they went through, as well: https://youtube.com/watch?v=6uAml6XO3bU

    Really excited about this news - I’ve loved since the 1st edition. Can't wait to see how robust, strong, and welcoming this new era can be.
