Wonder why they use average instead of mean

I think you may mean median, not mean, if you see what I mean.

The ARM architecture does apparently (I'm no expert) have some inherent power-efficiency advantages over x86, and it sounds like the Snapdragon X Elite will be specifically designed for high-performance mobile computing with low power consumption like the Apple M-series chips. So, all else being equal, you'd expect Qualcomm to have an advantage in laptops with this chip, but all else isn't equal because the software isn't there yet, and no one in the PC market is quite in a position to kickstart the software development like Apple is with Macs.

It will just shamble on, gradually disillusioning all the people who still cling to it long after it’s lost its soul.

Same as the rest of the corporate internet and digital services. I wonder whether people will ever lose patience with it and abandon these things.

There may have been an organized effort by the far right to take over various national subreddits. It gives the impression that their views are overwhelmingly popular in the country, when really they're not. The subreddit /r/Canada also got dominated by the far right, which led to the creation of /r/onguardforthee. At least one of the mods of /r/Canada was shown to be an active neo-Nazi, and another declared himself a white supremacist. There is still too much support for the far right in Canada (and we're looking at a big lurch to the right in the next election), but it's not as dominant as you'd think from that subreddit.

But that harms the environment! Republicans only fight against things that help.

That's how it would work in an actual free market - the thing Republicans pretend they support. But...

Months in jail and thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees—those are the consequences Alabamians and Arizonans could soon face for selling cell-cultured meat products that could cut into the profits of ranchers, farmers, and meatpackers in each state.

The point is precisely to prevent anyone being able to compete with lab-grown meat, no matter how cheap it might otherwise be.

Conservatives don't care. For everyone's sake they need to go. It's so saddening to see the UK government copying the ideas of right-wing extremists in the USA.

floofloof ,

Because that wouldn't hurt vulnerable minorities in particular. It's the old fascist technique of feeding people scapegoats on whom they can blame their troubles and take out their anger and frustration, so that they never ask whether the government might be responsible for their problems. It works best if you victimize a minority group that most people are unfamiliar with, and make it dangerous for people of that group to show their faces in public. Then the masses will never learn that they are not to be feared and hated.

Unfortunately the British people are staggeringly easy to convince that the government of the last 14 years has nothing to do with their declining quality of life over the last 14 years. It makes this scapegoating propaganda all too easy.

Brazil’s staggering dengue fever crisis is a warning to the world ( wapo.st )

The disease is ripping through much of South America, where scientists say rising temperatures due to climate change have both extended the territorial range of the mosquito that carries dengue and increased its proliferation.

floofloof ,

And right-wing politicians will put all their effort into combating any efforts to combat the disease, cheered on by 30-40% of the population.

Apologising through his lawyer Islam Khan, Bathurst-Shaw-Binning said: ‘I don’t know what happened to me that day and I don’t know why I was so stupid that my remorse did not appear when interviewed.’

He was full of mysteriously undetectable remorse.

Biden Vows to ‘Save the Planet From the Climate Crisis’ | In his speech to Congress, the president spoke in sweeping terms about global warming, and contrasted his record with that of Donald Trump. ( www.nytimes.com )

I'm hoping Americans do more than vote. You can volunteer, donate, and support candidates in close house and senate races as well.

floofloof ,

He has done some good things, but the best way for Biden to have helped the planet in the longer term would have been to step aside for a younger and more energetic candidate in this year's election.

Let me just give you one example, on a detail that is nevertheless crucial: the way the activity of the Houthis was being reported. As you know, they’ve been attacking ships in the Red Sea, which has cost the Israelis quite a lot; it’s a tactic that they have been using that, in and of itself, actually is oftentimes violating international law.

But most of the reporting in the beginning did not even mention that the demand that the Houthis had was a ceasefire. So it was left unstated what they were doing this for, leaving readers with the impression that they’re just doing it because they’re crazy. And also leaving them the impression—in fact, sometimes in the news media, it was stated as such—that Biden felt that his hands were tied, and as a result he needed to take military action.

No mention that they actually had a demand. That demand was a ceasefire.

That hasn't been mentioned in any report I have seen. Nor has it been explained why the USA has been bombing the Houthis. The media have not made clear that these are two parts of one war, in which the USA has consistently been taking Israel's side against the Palestinians.

I find it disappointing that it's written in Java. Rust is a great choice for Lemmy. Just a matter of taste, but I'd be much more inclined to contribute to a Rust project than a Java one, since I find it more enjoyable to work in Rust.

Pro-Palestine Protesters, AI, and Eric Adams: What I Saw at the 'Stand With Israeli Tech' Conference Before They Kicked Me Out ( hellgatenyc.com )

MindTheTech, a well-funded conference in Midtown focused on supporting the Israeli tech industry, was disrupted by pro-Palestine protesters on Monday morning, who were promptly forced out of the event. Moments after I tweeted videos of the disruptions, I was also kicked out without explanation.

Gilad Erdan, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, also delivered remarks. He criticized the UN member nations for not unanimously supporting Israel's military campaign in Gaza

"That is what the UN has become, a weapon in the hands of jihadists," Erdan said. He added that one third of the UN member nations are "Muslim countries," eliciting murmurs from the audience.

It's becoming clearer to people around the world just how crazy Israel's claim is that if you don't support their wholesale slaughter of civilians you must support terrorism. What it's doing in Gaza is harming global perceptions of Israel.

About a minute later, another protester interrupted. I learned later that her name was Ilana, and that she's an organizer with the anti-Zionist Israeli group Shoresh and Jewish Voices for Peace.

"Google is complicit in genocide!" she shouted. Moments later, a nearby woman shoved Ilana and she hit the ground.

"Go support terrorism somewhere else!" one man yelled, as two security guards pulled her out. The crowd applauded for Regev.

And there it is again. Are these people really such crude thinkers that they can only imagine either wholehearted support for Israel in everything it does, or wholehearted support for terrorism? Can they really not imagine that there's any other position a person might reasonably hold? Or do they just say this because it works for them rhetorically?

Kibbutz Be’eri Rejects Story in New York Times October 7 Exposé: “They Were Not Sexually Abused” ( theintercept.com )

It's a pretty precarious situation when so much of the functioning of societies around the world depends on these very few companies that can manufacture these chips. Especially when Taiwan is the hub of it all.

Huh. Fascism is on the rise everywhere. The planet is being destroyed by greedy billionaires. People are struggling to pay for food. There are wars and genocides. But he thinks the ugliest danger is "gender ideology", whatever that is.

And he says it erases differences. If "gender ideology" is being a non-bigot about gender, then that respects differences. What erases differences is forcing everyone to conform to only two set gender stereotypes.

It's saddening that dogma prevents him seeing how dramatically advances in understanding and respect for gender have improved so many people's lives. And it's disappointing to see him align himself and his church with forces of oppression.

Good mini PC for around 100€

My current setup consists of a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4gb RAM and a 1tb external SSD. I'm thinking of getting a used mini PC for around 100€ to replace that tho because it would give me a lot more power and especially RAM (I currently need to use an 8gb swap file). My plan so far is to get a used mini PC that's quiet, has a...

The N100 has a reputation for decent performance and good power efficiency at a cheap price. It's a basic quad core CPU with only efficiency cores (no performance cores) and no hyperthreading, but it comes with modern codec capabilities. It will certainly give you more power than a Raspberry Pi for everyday tasks, but don't expect to do anything too demanding with it. If your needs are basic an N100 mini PC seems like a good option.

I cannot believe our government would sit idly by and let this cockamamie scheme just unfold and go, “Damn, I guess it’s technically legal.”

That sounds like exactly the kind of thing the Democrats love to do.

Oh no, not irreparable injury to a completely useless and environmentally damaging industry! Better keep causing irreparable damage to the planet instead then.

Woodfin was reacting to the state Senate’s approval this week of a bill that would also bar public schools from affirming “a divisive concept,” such as teaching that “slavery and racism are aligned with the founding principles of the United States” and that “fault, blame, or bias should be assigned to members of a race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin, on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin.”

White supremacism has been a guiding principle of US government since its founding. These thin-skinned Republicans just can't bear to be told their heritage isn't perfect. Ironically, this is typical of white supremacists.
