Back then I read an article about how M$ is crippling the ability of other office packets to read their docx and xslx formats which are supposed to be open formats, but in reality are written in a way never to be fully integrated by competing products. More information about their pseudo open standard: https://fsfe.org/activities/msooxml/msooxml.en.html

Munich in the past have used Linux PCs for quite some time until eventually switching back to windows. Back then they were citing the same incompatibilities to open and read and display M$ office files correctly. So Microsoft is definitely abusing their position as a market leader and trying to cripple competition as much as they can.

Best resources to learn more about networking

I have been exploring the world of home servers/self-hosting for a little over a year now, and feel like I have at a decent understanding of a lot of things that go into this. The one thing I am not remotely comfortable with yet is networking. It's like a foreign language to me....

filister ,

The reality is that you won't learn much just by reading, you need to try to debug stuff and eventually work in the area to truly learn.

But I am sure there are plenty of tutorials and video courses in various platforms where you can learn a bit on the topic. Coursera might be a good place to start as you can enroll for free to those courses if I am not wrong.

filister OP ,

Unfortunately that's not only in Ibiza but pretty much everywhere in the West.

filister ,

Damn, paying 4$ for a gallon, here in Europe the gallon is more than 7$.

filister ,

You know when something is free on the internet, you are the product

filister ,

Try to execute

ping -c 1000 1.1.1.1

And check for any packet loss and jitter.

Additionally I would also recommend trying a different test server and comparing the results.

Keep in mind that your ISP might also have issues with the connectivity which can be fixed in the following days.

filister ,

Sorry in that case I would recommend you do iperf and see what the traffic would be. Make sure you whitelist the traffic as well.

filister ,

SCP encrypts your traffic before sending it, so it might be CPU/RAM bottleneck. You can try with different cypher or different compression levels, which are defined in your .ssh/config file.

filister ,

https://www.baeldung.com/linux/network-speed-testing try some of the options offered here.

You can also try rsync/rclone too and see how they perform.

U.S. Finds Israel in Compliance With Biden's Demands on International Law, Humanitarian Aid ( www.haaretz.com )

The U.S. has deemed Israel in compliance with U.S. President Joe Biden’s national security memorandum stipulating that recipients of U.S. weapons must be in compliance with international law, nor may they block the provision of humanitarian assistance....

filister ,

So the UN vote was only a smoke screen for the electorate and in reality nothing changed in the US policies towards Israel. Good to know!

CIA Used Chinese Social Media In Covert Influence Operation Against Xi Jinping's Government ( www.reuters.com )

Two years into office, President Donald Trump authorized the Central Intelligence Agency to launch a clandestine campaign on Chinese social media aimed at turning public opinion in China against its government, according to former U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the highly classified operation. Three former officials...

The same with Musk. People are seeing him as the sole engineer of Tesla and SpaceX while in reality anonymous engineers did all this possible.

filister ,

I think in one of his autobiographies he was claiming that he self educated how to build rockets from some books and I wonder how much of this is true and how much is coming from his ego.

filister ,

Planned obsolescence is indeed a thing. Companies don't want you to stick to your devices forever.

filister ,

Targeting journalists and UNRWA was also a deliberate attack to suppress the information going out of Gaza and also to cause the biggest possible suffering to the civilian population.

filister ,

If you ask me, Unraid went the Plex way, enshittification ensues.

filister ,

Just take some popcorn and watch their IPO crash spectacularly.

I wonder if people in r/wallstteetbets don't decide to short it out, but on the other hand, U/spez will do all in its power to block people calling for it.

filister ,

That's exactly the lock-in. To be fair, Android are trying similarly to lock-in their users, but at least Google isnot locking their apps to one mobile OS, plus we still have F-droid and a lot more freedom and power over how to use our devices.

Israel government spokesman Eylon Levy suspended after comments about Gaza aid ( www.haaretz.com )

Levy's suspension follows a tweet, in response to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, that 'there are NO limits on the entry of food, water, medicine, or shelter equipment into Gaza, and in fact the crossings have EXCESS capacity'

filister ,

Can't you simply ban the IP address of the offending bot and limit the number of comments a person can generate in let's say 1 minute to some sane amount

filister OP ,

I guess he cut his avocado toast.

filister OP ,

I guess NVIDIA doesn't really care about its gaming division, and it is not like Intel or AMD are giving them any hard time either, mostly AMD is playing ball while Intel is struggling to catch up with them.

filister ,

High time to switch to Linux if you ask me

filister ,

That's why it is wiser to update when .01 .02 release launches.

filister ,

I also read only this one and pretty much share the same feelings about it.

filister ,

Libre office Draw also works for basic editing

filister ,

If only Israel was allowing sufficient aid in Gaza that wouldn't be necessary.

"Never use hotel internet if you want to do a secure call:" How spies listened in on German general ( www.bbc.com )

Four German military officials discussed what targets German-made Taurus missiles could potentially hit if Chancellor Olaf Scholz ever allowed them to be sent to Kyiv, and the call had been intercepted by Russian intelligence....

filister ,

It is fine if you use unprotected wifi and then connect to a VPN.

filister ,

Same with Huawei, they blocked their phones and telecommunication equipment and never managed to show any proof that the Chinese government is actually snooping on their equipment.

And it is not like the US doesn't have a proven track record of pushing American suppliers to put backdoors and pretty much doing exactly what they accused Huawei and indirectly China of doing.

filister ,

Prove me wrong that this has nothing to do with the fact that China became the world's biggest auto exporter last year and this is a desperate way for the US to try to protect their own auto industry.

Free market, my bottom.

filister ,

You do realise that you have described just now what all startups are doing in the US. Like look at WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. they were working for years if not decades on a massive loss in an attempt to more or less monopolize the segment, backed by the deep pockets of their investors.

And I think it is only fair if you demand the same level of scrutiny to all companies involved in such practices.

filister ,

And the US has done this with so many industries, which you are trying to monopolize or control.

And apparently you are okay when your own country is doing this but not okay when other countries are doing it.

Does this seem fair to you, because sure as hell doesn't seem to me.

filister ,

Looks pretty dope, care to share some dots?
