I'm a crusty old nerd who chases bright shiny things and loves playing with old computers :) Especially my Atari 800XL and Amiga.

I build castles in the cloud(s) for a living.

I think this #xz thing is gonna go down as the day #FLOSS officially lost its innocence.

You know what I hope comes out of this moment of sincere sadness for those who care about this stuff?

A sense that we will no longer be abused by Megacorps who build on the backs of our work but can't be arsed to help fund that work despite the fact that literally THE CONTINUED EXISTENCE OF THEIR BUSINESS depends on it.

Do you think #google, #amazon or #facebook could exist in their current form without oodles of super high quality free software to run their server swarms on?

Because they can't. For those of us old enough to remember, just imagine "the cloud" if every virtual server required a Solaris or SCO license.

If you've given all you can give, walk away. Open source is wonderful and amazing but you are human and your health and well being is more important. I don't care what falls down as a result.

Listening to Wil Wheaton read @pluralistic's Red Team Blues was a delight.

Such a rare treat to read a techno-thriller written by someone who not only knows, but actually CARES about the "tech" in the tech-uh-no :)

I hope some day the Fediverse finds it in its collective heart to invite him back, even if he did say some dumb ass things :) I think he belongs here.

It's easy to get grumpy at @ubuntu for decisions you may not love or agree with because your use case doesn't match those they were made for, but I think we owe them a big thank you for pouring the blood, sweat and tears they do into keeping our machines stable.

I just upgraded my development VM from 23.04 to 23.10 over an ssh session with do-release-upgrade and there was nary a hiccup.

I had to re-install a single Neovim plugin (I can handle two keystrokes in my plugin manager, thanks :), and that was it!

Really impressive stuff Canonical. While I don't know your names I also want to thank all the individual humans behind this effort. There's a lot of love in that distro, and it shows!

@pluralistic So, I love Libro FM! And I would love to switch to them wholesale, but the fact that the only plan I can sign up for involves getting 1 credit per month. That's just not nearly enough. I "read" 2-4 books a month with Audlble. I'd be happy to pay more than I do for the 2 credit a month Audible plan, because you've made a compelling case for why their pricing model is predatory and hurts authors, but paying full list price for two additional titles is also unfair in the other direction.

I know you aren't them and may not even have any control over this, I'm just expressing my frustration around the fact that for now I need to keep my Audible membership rather than switching.

If you want your post to be as widely visible as possible, you might want to use groups as well as hashtags:

Even if you have no followers, posts sent to groups will be visible to everyone following the group and also everyone on their servers.

Posts that just use hashtags will only be seen on servers that have "noticed" your account:

In a nutshell: groups distribute posts actively, hashtags distribute posts passively. Using both is best.

@FediTips I haven't really gotten much traction when I've attempted to use groups. Perhaps I'm not doing it right, or perhaps the groups I've tried weren't very popular :)
