I toot for me.

Mostly bikes. I'm into compact towns and cities where you don't need to own a car, and heavy economic board games. Machine learning stuff is my day job.

The world is on fire and we should try to save some of it before there's nothing but ashes.

lowercase toots are usually jokes

Sometimes an F5 tornado will grind the bark off of trees. The cyclone, nature's sandblaster, is full of metal scrap, glass, broken, tile and cement, it turns entire buildings to dust, scrapes the ground down to clay, strips asphalt, lifts & flings sidewalks. Everything pulverized into further grist to grind the earth.

To see a cyclone in the big midwest sky is to look on the angry face of God.

And I often think: Like a cosmic horror, perhaps they make Americans a little crazy.

@MichaelTBacon @futurebird My uncle slept through a strong tornado while on a business trip. When he woke up, the buildings on the other side of the street were all wrecked. There aren’t many other natural disasters that can compare. Earthquakes, maybe, but tornadoes are so strange in their precision.

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

If I was a university prof and a student's parent contacted me demanding that I change their grade I would get my mom to write back to them & tell them to leave me alone

@ElleGray When I was in academia, my colleague had a student in his office in tears about her low grade. At one point, this student said, “My mom and I worked really hard on this assignment!” to which my friend suddenly got very serious, informing the student that her mother helping write her assignment was academic misconduct and could land the student in front of the disciplinary board. The tears dried up real quick, I understand.

E-bikes are very cool and I'm glad they are getting popular.

    However.

There is a big difference between a crash at 12mph and one at 20mph.

Your ebike can give you injuries normally only found in motorcycle accidents. And there isn't enough advice on what constitutes sufficient maintenance for ebikes.

If you don't get balding tires fixed on a regular bike you could fall off and bruise or break a leg.

At ebike speeds that same fall will shatter your leg in dozens of pieces.

    BE CAREFUL

    @dx@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@futurebird I would be interested to see actual crash outcome statistics on this, if they exist.

20 mph feels like the right limit to me, with my pedal assist ebike. I wouldn’t want to be going faster, but this is all vibes. Hence, I would be interested in stats.

My highest speed crash was downhill on a normal bike at 40 mph, but there were mitigating factors about how that crashed happened that meant my bike decelerated rapidly before I was thrown, so I was totally uninjured.

Every now and then I hear conversations from outside of here about "the state of social media" and let me tell you: People are suffering. People are miserable. Many people feel addicted to social media but unable to have positive and valuable interactions in the space. Mostly, in the profit-driven social media space negative emotional reactions glue eyeballs as well as positive, so a heap of the experiences is just ... unpleasant.

Meanwhile around here things are different.

@futurebird @sidereal This is one of the greatest things about living in a small town. We lost a lot when we moved from the city to a town of 4000, but the only ads I see on an average day are on the side of the bus as it rolls through town.

There used to be an anti-ads magazine called AdBusters. There was also a recent War on Cars podcast about an anti-ad org in the UK.

Don't use "crawled out from under a rock" as an insult. Most of the things that live under rocks are much nicer than the people who get accused of being like them.

@futurebird @johnefrancis I always interpreted it as a yokel who caught a ride in the back of a turnip truck into the city, not that it was referring to a literal turnip falling off the turnip truck

Did you have "sex ed" (sometimes called "health class") in school? Did it help you in any way? Hurt?

Which of the following apply (check more than one if needed, so if you had a multiple classes at different ages check both)

If I could change one thing about the education we had it would be to have more focus on the reality of rape and the nature of consent. These topics weren't addressed much beyond a cartoon version of bogey men jumping out of bushes and I think it left many unprepared.

On the upper east everyone is health conscious so all the sweets in the confectioneries are diminutive in size. Something I get but my working class soul aches and howls that a box of dunken heins is three bucks. I’ll never get used to this world.

@futurebird Maybe a third of these I haven’t encountered, and the lion’s share of the rest I have no strong opinion about, but there’s about 10% of them that I am livid about the “alternatives” even being included. It was an illuminating experience regardless, because I discovered some conventions I follow without even realizing I was.
