@pluralistic You wrote that "Personalized pricing" predicts the maximum amount you are willing to pay.
I found out that, when I use this argument with less affluent people, they suddenly like surveillance, because they think they will pay less than the rich. Their "maximum amount" is lower.

Please add something like "or offer you lower quality if it determines that you are poor" in your next writings.

The system maximizes markup, not end price.

    @pluralistic Nice story, but there is an important piece of the puzzle missing.
    Thai Union killed on of their main outlets but they still produce tons of shrimp. They must have some plan to continue selling so much shrimp.
    So what is that plan?
    Just keep looking for new shrimp outlets in the coming months.

    @pluralistic Google search still works very well if they don't know who you are. Just use a computer and delete all cookies and you will find out. This is what kagi essentially does, so the results are the same.

    It will not work on an Android phone, of course. Android is designed by Google to track its users, so deleting cookies is not enough.

    Why people use Chrome, log in their Google account and expect Google not to taint the search results is beyond me.

    Remember the first time you used Google search? It was like magic. After years of progressively worsening search quality from Altavista and Yahoo, Google was literally stunning, a gateway to the very best things on the internet.

    @pluralistic The other elephant in the room is google. I'll consider changing back to Android when banking applications will be available on Fdroid and are installable on a rooted, de-googled Android phone. In the mean time, I prefer the overlord who does not tell their shareholders that they get 200$ a year from each of their vassals through ad sales.

    I agree it is a choice between pest and cholera.

    @pluralistic There is an essential difference between science-fiction writers and the A.I. crowd: the first ones sell books, the second ones sell predictions for venture capital and expect not to be left with the empty bag when the music stops.

    @pluralistic You are describing your view of google maps. For example, you see locksmiths in New York and a clinic in London.
    But google maps is dynamic (search too). It will show a different view depending on who google thinks you are. It is particularly bad if you are logged in a google account, because then google knows who you are.

    dl2jml ,
    @dl2jml@mastodon.radio avatar

    @pluralistic
    Maps are also especially enshitified if you travel. Say, for example that you want to travel to London. The map you see when you are at home may show places worth visiting. Once you are in London, google maps will only show tourist traps.
    Save places worth visiting before you travel. Or use openstreetmaps.

    @vampiress Spain (and France, which has the same rule) is much smaller and much more populated than Australia. As much as I prefer trains to planes, I don't think it would be environmentally friendly to cover Australia with high-speed train tracks. Their effect on the environment is not negligible.

    Vice died the way it lived: being suckered in by smarter predators, even as it trained its own predatory instincts on those more credulous than its own supremely gullible leadership. RIP, we hardly knew ye.

    @pluralistic I am actually suprised that Vice lasted that long.
    Your article supposes that Vice leaders were gullible for following FB "pivot to video" when everybody with half a brain knew that strategy to be doomed from the onset. Except that:

    1. it is not a unique case
    2. they must have known about FB plans, because it mirrors their own only plan: lock-in people and then extract revenue.

    Most plastics cannot be recycled.

    Most plastics that can be recycled are not recycled.

    Most plastic garbage ends up in landfills, is dumped into the ocean, or is incinerated, which poisons the atmosphere.

    Microplastics are in your bloodstream right now, and are probably also in the food you eat.

    BUT THAT'S OKAY!! 😃 Because producing and selling plastics is very profitable for the oil industry. Capitalists ❤️ plastic and we should too!!

    dl2jml ,
    @dl2jml@mastodon.radio avatar

    @breadandcircuses Plastic can be incinerated with other wastes and help produce heat or even electricity. That works better than one thinks, the biggest catch is that it mainly works in large cities or the energetic cost of transporting waste to the incinerator is higher than the energy within.
    But yes: the best way is to produce less waste, plastic or other types.

    Etiquette proposal: if you invite someone from another to a teleconference, the onus is on you to present all times in their local timezone, rather than your own - that is, the person asking should bear the labor of timezone conversions, not the person being asked.

    @pluralistic Radio amateurs use UTC.
    ICS files can be given in UTC. Then the time will display correctly in every calendar application, even if the other end travels or there is summer time /winter time changes, etc...
