What's the silliest apocalypse you can think of?

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks Due to an unexpectedly popular Vatican ad campaign, an overwhelming majority of males become Catholic priests and humanity nearly dies out within a single generation.

What's an overlooked US or Canadian midsize city that would make a great location setting for a neo-noir urban horror game?

Bonus: If the region is especially good for small towns and rural/wild areas for variety.

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.

Relatively small, but large enough to be a city. it has under 100k people and is notable for having a railway museum. And that's it. Some years back in Vancouver I saw the city advertise as a good place to move to, amid extreme unaffordability of metro Vancouver. It is far up north enough that it is proper north Canada cold without getting all True Detective season 4 on you.

Horror prompt: They called for newcomers... what came?

A lot of you know I love trash cinema. What about you? What's your favorite trashy movie? Low budget, sleazy, unhinged, any version of "trashy" works! Tell me about the trash you love.

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks I will forever defend Dog Soldiers. Cheap and trashy? Sure. But also super earnest.

"I am not breaking radio silence because the lot of you got scared by a dead flying fucking cow!"

it's frankly amazing how many funding problems the US government could solve by eliminating the income cap on Social Security taxes and taxing capital gains like regular self-employed income.

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks I maintain that capital gains tax being lower than income tax only means that passively profiting off of society's productivity is explicitly presented as more important than contributing to productivity. There is no other reasonable explanation.

It bothers me a lot that space marines in are described as posthuman. They clearly, obviously are not.

dawngreeter OP ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I can see that being interesting. Personally, I enjoy them being portrayed as legacy systems, when it is well done.

But of course, they are mostly a magical power fantasy with no reality anchors and that is very, very boring.

If you're paying for shipping via Backerkit and your card expires before they charge you, does Backerkit send you an email asking you to update your CC info? Or do I have to figure out which projects I backed are impacted?

#BackerKit #KickStarter #CrowdFunding

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I am pretty sure they notify you on a failed charge and you have a certain amount of time to fix it.

However, I am trying really hard to remember the specific instance when this happened to me and I can't. I think it did - I had a card expire and I am nearly certain that this is how it happened both for KS and Backerkit, but take it with a grain of salt.

How frequently do people obsess over #ttrpg probability math? Is that just a me thing?

#OurBrilliantRuin has all of my interest. Excellent theme, but probabilities looked weird. I sat down to calculate it. Got super weird results. Found one other person with the exact same thinking. We talk about it. Crowdfunding campaign publishes a post about their die roll philosophy. It actually makes sense within the game theme.

So I spent hours going from "great theme" all the way to "great theme"...

Slowly finding it less and less fun to engage with very specific prognostications of "Exactly how Wizards is going to fuck up it's shit".

Because, like, one of the many, many theories will be very possibly be right, sure. But we don't NEED to predict specifics? We know the underlying cycle now, because it's everywhere in business, making things shit.

The daily and dismal news of the great enshittening has ruined the fun of trying to predict any particular for me.

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I am sure there's a number of very well paid people thinking up many scenarios for how to turn it to shit as we speak. I wouldn't be surprised if Enshittening Specialist becomes a title by 2025.

But yes, impossible to predict a scenario when they are so prolific about different ways to do it.

Me: I really have no interest in Daggerheart.

First minute of a random Youtube review: The main features of Daggerheart are that it has cards and it is 2d12.

Me: You can stop there. I love Daggerheart!

Somebody explain to me like I'm a difficult 5 year old what kind of tech brain makes major sites waste countless programming hours separately developing web apps for various platforms. Make the responsive website. Wrapping it as a mobile app is trivial. So why the extra work?

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks Probably a few reasons.

But if I had to pick one, it is that fully responsive websites are a mirage wrapped in a thick layer of lies, stuffed inside a monkey's paw.

dawngreeter ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks Without having firsthand experience in that particular area, this is me just guessing.

Some issues could include a certain format of ad banners or other necessary third party elements that differ between platforms and significantly increase code complexity to handle reactively, or logistical limitations of pushing out the same codebase everywhere. I would dread fixing a bug on platform A and then doing regression testing for 20 other platforms.

Seeing a lot of talk about spam but zero actual spam. I guess either dice.camp is uninteresting to spammers or we have amazing moderation. Or, likely, both.

dawngreeter OP ,
@dawngreeter@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon That makes sense. Definitely appreciative of the admin effort, there.

Though, obviously, makes one wonder what it'll look like when spammers get more powerful tools.

As the US approaches the third election in a row where the entire country would rather have none of the above, one has to marvel at the iron grip boomers have on the society. They will literally die holding the reigns.
