I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

My Yoshino cherry tree blossoms are just beginning to open because of these incredibly warm temperatures, and Monday night it's going to be 26F again.

Well... the tree will survive.

I'll try to get some photos this weekend before the cold snap.

This is the same type that Washington DC has all around the tidal basin, which makes those beautiful spring photos. They get nipped a LOT.

Last year we dipped to about 5F which was crazy, and zap we lost all the rhododendron blossoms as well. Fingers crossed!

Just went and bought some tests, as I found many of the ones I had expired (even with the extended dates) in February. With the discount they were about $5 apiece and that seemed pretty good. These expire in August.

A couple extra packs of as well. Because, why not.

Lucked onto a shift change this morning on watch, at about 6:30AM their time, Tuesday.

Jackie was on the nest, craning her head (perhaps a dog barking in background, making everyone nervous.) Shadow did a fly-by, then landed on the nest with another stick.

Eggs were visible!

The male is now ensconced on the nest, in the 3:00 position. His new stick is right in front of him, within easy reach. He spent a bit of time "freaking" on the stick, which is how they clean their beaks after eating, or to maintain its shape. Sound is really carrying this morning, with the dog barking, and what sounds like a woodpecker nearby. He doesn't seem too exercised by either one.

Quite a dark photo, still, this screencap from the webcam. The stars of the image are the TWO EGGS which are visible in the nest, while Shadow looks down, in preparation for rolling them, and then pancaking on top of them. He seemed to be rolling the 3rd egg, which was just out of sight. The nest itself is now much less snow-covered, and that large berm to the right is gone. Many more sticks are visible. A warm week, I'd imagine most of the snow will melt.

    Afternoon situation with the nest. Just realized that the female, Jackie, has been on the nest for 20 straight hours in the mucky weather. and are still falling, and the is picking up. It puts my into perspective.

    Continuing the Monday eagle saga, shows Jackie, the female, still settled deeply into the nest. More of the snow has melted from around the edges, leaving her much more exposed to the wind. One can still see a grey vista behind her, down to the near shore of the lake. Snow can be seen right down to the shore. #CA needs the precip, but it sure felt better when they had sun and traded nest duty.

    Jackie, the female, is still on the nest, and has been for more than 22 hours. The weather has gotten colder and what was previously freezing rain is now snow. Hoping this covers the nest again, and gives it some insulation. The large nest has almost all of its sticks currently visible, with just a dusting of new snow on most of it (and Jackie). She is lying with her head at approx 2:00, but there is no real view in that direction. It looks foggy and cold. And wet. I would really like to see a fish delivered sometime.

    I was going to do an recap tonight, but due to heavy the cameras are both offline.

    The mods reported that during bad weather Jackie is more likely to stay on the nest herself, and not let Shadow take a turn. She's already well past 24 hours straight.

    Depending on the weather, it may take a while to regain the camera feed.

    Keeping good thoughts for the at the webcam.

    Yes, that would make it very difficult. She's just so wonderfully colorful, and the movement in the pieces I find very compelling.

    By coincidence, I just had another of her works, "Aspen Forest" up on my Frame TV.

    A snapshot of a corner of a family room. The Frame TV sitting on furniture displays a bright, colorful image from the artist Erin Hanson, titled "Aspen Forest." Above the TV there is a small, fixed window with an old piece of pebbly stained glass hanging in front of it, mostly clear with just a couple of comma-shaped pieces in purple and a round one in orange. In a previous house we had collected many stained glass windows, but this home doesn't have as many spots.
