It annoys me how people talk about using social media like it's a vice. And a female-coded one at that.

"Spend less time on social media" is trotted out a virtuous in the same way that "not eating a pint of ice cream" is.

Imagine if in the early days of movable type, there were people going around saying "don't read pamphlets, they are full of misinformation"

Social media is the primary way news is disseminated. It is superseding newspapers and TV as the primary vector of mass media. 1/

@futurebird Arguably the fact that people treat social media like they treat watching the news, is part of the, reason why the world looks the way it does. That being said, most social media platforms are designed to be massive time sucks that keep you doom scrolling for hours only to realise that you've spent 3 hours reading opinions on some local politician 4000 miles away instead of spending the evening with a partner, a hobby or something that actually adds value to your life.

Trump’s tax giveaway added $2 trillion+ to the deficit.
Making them permanent would cost $3 trillion.
More than 60% of the benefits would go to the richest 20%.
He’s now eyeing a second round of corporate tax cuts.
Does that sound like a champion of the working class to you?

@rbreich I don't think a single one of his voters think that he's a champion for the working class. He's a terrorist and a rapist and that's all his voters give a fuck about, it's truly time to pretend otherwise.

The biggest challenge in 2024 is to get enough people to actually listen to what Trump and those around him are openly, consistently, and explicitly promising to do once they get back to power.

It is utterly deranged, and discounting it as just rhetoric would be a disaster.

@tzimmer_history I suspect that an even bigger challenge will be to get normal people to realise that people who vote for a terrorist support terrorism. They're not complaining about alarmism because they think he's lying about aiming for dictatorship. They know he's not, they just don't want to be judged for supporting it.

Mastodon has two similar but significantly different features: Favourites and Bookmarks.

⭐ Favourites are the Mastodon equivalent of Likes, used to show appreciation. Click on the star below a post to favourite it. The author of the post is notified when you favourite it.

🔖 Bookmarks are for when you want to save a post and go back to it later. Click on the bookmark icon below a post (or in the ⋯ menu). Bookmarks are totally private, no one is notified.

@FediTips worth noting is also that bookmarks get transferred when moving your account to a new server, favourites do not!

A deliberate campaign to create a permission structure to support rightwing extremism for people who don’t want to think of themselves as supporting rightwing extremism - combined with the eternal mainstream media quest to demonstrate “neutrality” and “balance.”

The result is a bizarre monstrosity.

@tzimmer_history only some fascist tabloid could seriously think that lacking memory is worse than a pedophile, rapist and terrorist.

@MikeDunnAuthor this is true, but those corporations don't exist in a vacuum. Their emissions are that high because consumers, i.e individual people, buy their products and services. We should all make better choices every day, instead of pretending that a bike ride will offset monthly shopping sprees.

@MikeDunnAuthor @504DR Absolutely, I live outside reasonable public transportation range of my work, so I have to have a car. But I CAN make other choices, like not eating meat, not buying fast fashion, replacing household items only when they're broken etc, which all contributes to less production and less climate destruction. Everyone has to make the choices that work for them, but I guarantee that future generations will not look kindly on our lifestyle.
