I'm reminded of Ian Kershaw's concept of "Working Towards the Führer".

“Hitler’s personalized form of rule invited radical initiatives from below and offered such initiatives backing, so long as they were in line with his broadly defined goals. This promoted ferocious competition at all levels of the regime”

The promises in his speeches reduce to: When you're MAGA, they let you do it. You can do anything. As long as you're working toward the Führer.

The Right’s Politics of Revenge

The responses to the Trump verdict offer an instructive – and alarming – reminder of what defines the American Right today: They are out for bloody retaliation, all dressed up as patriotism.

If Trump wins and the Republicans keep at least the House or re-take the Senate, Ukraine and NATO are finished. And if that happens, Putin will turn to Europe.

Cool, cool, just the wife of a Supreme Court justice appearing to say she's going to sue the media for reporting on her. Perhaps a Justice might want to explain to her how the First Amendment works? www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

If Mrs. Alito knew a lawyer, then she might've known that TRUTH is a complete defense to all defamation claims.

But Mrs. Alito does not know a lawyer. She only knows a politician in robes.

When I was a mere clerk for the 1st circuit appeals court, I wasn't allowed to have a political bumper sticker for fear of creating even the appearance of bias on the court.

How can Justice Alito be allowed to rule on Jan 6-related matters after flying a pro-insurrection flag?

chapulin_enojado ,

How? Because “[w]hen you’re a [Supreme Court justice], they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ‘em by the [Constitution]. You can do anything.”

If the supreme court jumps in and overturns the Jan. 6 convictions of 100s of people who attacked the capitol it will be one of the most politically charged actions taken by this court and in a politically charged environment.

There are many laws that might need revision, scrutiny, but they reached out through space and time to grab this hot potato.

It's a joke.

chapulin_enojado ,

@futurebird
It's said that laws are the "sword and shield" of civil society. We are seeing that the legal "sword" is used mainly against enemies of the right, while the "shield" is only used when it benefits the right.

That is what "rule of law" means.

"Imagine, for a moment, if President Joe Biden were to be caught openly sleeping at an important hearing. Then imagine it were to occur at another important hearing the next day. Not only would right-wing media outlets like Fox News run wild with coverage questioning his fitness for office, mainstream news organizations would no doubt also treat the snooze fest as a serious news story."

The only rational conclusion that I can draw from this, and many other examples, is that the mainstream media is not worried about a second Trump presidency at all and may actually be rooting for Trump.

Let's see, using Umberto Eco's typical elements of fascism, Trump and today's Republican Party hit them all.

    Trump is a fascist.

The Republican Party is a fascist political party.

    1. A syncretic cult of tradition (think Q-anon)
    2. Rejection of the modern world
    3. Cult of action for action's sake (thinking is effeminate and weak)
    4. Disagreement is treason (no analytical criticism allowed)
    5. Fear of difference (racist by definition)
    6. Appeal to social frustration
    7. Obsession with plots & conspiracies
    8. The enemy is both weak and strong (humiliated by enemies' wealth & power, but convinced they can be destroyed)
    9. Pacifism or compromise is treason; life is permanent warfare
    10. Contempt for the weak
    11. Everyone is educated to become a hero, and heroes crave death
    12. Machismo (transfer of will to power to sexual matters), disdain for women, intolerance of nonstandard sexual habits
    13. Selective populism (individuals have no rights; The Leader interprets the "will" of the people)
    14. Newspeak (Lingua Tertii Imperii); an impoverished vocabulary and elementary syntax

The major papers are focusing on how Trump is cruising to the GOP nomination with his decisive win over Nikki Haley in her home state of South Carolina. But they ignore some flashing warning signs contained within the numbers. Let’s take a closer look. https://open.substack.com/pub/statuskuo/p/status-report-warning-signs-for-trump?r=1zr8b&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

"The New York Times described Biden’s 96 percent win as 'an uncertain measure of wider enthusiasm' while heralding Trump’s 60 percent win over Haley as 'a crushing blow in her home state' in its respective South Carolina primary headlines."

The NYT simply loves the Republican framing of issues. "New York Times" appears right after "gullible" in the encyclopedia.

Alabama code (16-28-3) says "every child between the ages of six and 17 years shall be required to attend" school. One exception says "prior to attaining his or her 16th birthday". Everything else just relates to "age".

I suspect Lucian K. Truscott is onto something when he says Republicans who claim they're voting God when they vote Trump aren't motivated as much by opposition to abortion as they claim:

"It’s worse than that. They want what he’s got, an unfettered right to party, to get away with whatever they want to do with no consequences.

The problem is that okay for me but not for thee is part of the human condition."

This reminds me of yesterday's commentary by Prof. Timothy Snyder about constitutional self-defense, comparing the post-WWII German constitution and the post-Civil War American one:

"Can a constitution defend itself? Germans have asked this question, and given an answer. So, for that matter, have Americans.

"When the American republic was attacked in 1861, this was understood by its defenders as an insurrection. After the Confederacy's military campaign to preserve and extend the institution of slavery, after the bloodiest war the United States has ever fought, the United States was reconstituted as a democracy. To its original Constitution were added three amendments.

"One of the principles of America's postwar Constitution, as amended, was constitutional self-defense."
