Doesn't work for me. Do you have any custom rules?

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I use AnySoftKeyboard (fdroid github website). It has quite the amount of customizability. I like that there are arrow buttons to navigate text better.

No way, Debian uses systemd, and systemd uses systemd-journald for logging, and doesn't need cron, because it has timers.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

I haven't tried last.fm but I like ListenBrainz for that stuff.

To determine the current WM in Wayland, neofetch first tries getting the process connected to the current Wayland display. If that fails, it checks all running processes against a hardcoded list of known WMs (which includes river).

In practice, it seems to prefer the value of XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, but idrk, neofetch is magic.

You might've seen people use fastfetch, which should just get it right, but is also magic, tho at least c and not bash.

I'm so glad I started using Linux before getting used too much to something that doesn't support it. (If you have the time to try out different things, give Krita a shot)

How to download music from Youtube with metadata?

I know that there are alot of Spotify downloaders that download the metadata from Spotify and then download the audio from Youtube, but currently I don't use Spotify and I have my playlists on Youtube, is there any way to add the metadata to my songs or download them with the metadata?

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

yt-dlp (with --add-metadata) puts the channel name in the artist field and the video title as the track name. With --embed-thumbnail, it uses the thumbnail as the album art. This can all work, but only if your artist puts just the name in the title, and uses the album art as the thumbnail. The problem is when they don't.

Right, forgot I wanted to mention that. Also, if you don't want to use such a fancy tool, many media players have a simple tag editor built in.

I don’t have a car, as I’m 17.

Try not to get one at all. You should have good enough public transport in the UK to get you around. Living in a place where everything you need is in easy walking distance is ideal, though not easily achievable for some. Also, (insert urbanism propaganda here).

The easy way to have both is:

  • be trans girl
  • get a gf who's also a nerd
  • not straight romance like on TV, but who cares, lesbians are better anyway.

How different is Gentoo's new binary package system, compared to Arch Linux?

It was announced late last year that Gentoo is now offering binary versions of their packages. I’ve always had an interest in Gentoo, but the need to compile everything has always turned me away from it. I run Arch because it gives me the sense that I have more control of my system, when compared to other distros like Ubuntu,...

backhdlp ,
@backhdlp@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I've been using Gentoo for a bit less than a month now. Installing the binary version of a package can easily be done by providing one or two flags to emerge. The binary packages are compiled pretty generic, to work with most systems, so you lose out on most of the compilation level control.

It boils down to them having no idea what they're doing, asking for help with almost every tiny thing, and cluttering forums with basic questions that have been answered thousands of times already.

I only recommend Linux to people who I think could actually use it with little help.
