Half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food and housing costs.

A third of the workers have had to rely on at least one government assistance program.

Amazon's stock hit an all time high in April. Jeff Bezos is now worth $203 billion.

This is what oligarchy looks like.

Record number of river barriers removed across Europe in 2023

Removal of nearly 500 barriers last year will help restore disturbed waterways to their natural state, says Dam Removal Europe

Europe removed a record number of dams and other barriers from its rivers in 2023, a report has found, helping to restore its disturbed waterways to their natural states.

Nearly 500 barriers were taken out of European rivers last year, according to figures compiled by Dam Removal Europe, an increase of 50% from the year before.

France led the way in helping rivers recover, with 156 removals, the report found, followed by Spain, Sweden and Denmark. The UK removed 36 barriers.

“It is amazing to witness another record-breaking year for dam removals in European rivers,”

2/

@anna_lillith@mas.to avatar

said Herman Wanningen, the director of the World Fish Migration Foundation and co-founder of Dam Removal Europe.

Europe’s rivers have been fragmented by dams, weirs, culverts and fords – many of which are no longer needed. An estimated 150,000 of the 1.2m barriers in European waterways are obsolete and possibly dangerous, according to the report, which documented 113 deaths involving river barriers in Europe since 2000.

Dam Removal Europe, a coalition of seven environmental groups including WWF and The Nature Conservancy, which aims to restore the free-flowing state of rivers and streams, said the pace of removals was rising.

It highlighted the removal of a quarry weir in Scotland, where a steep gorge blocked heavy machinery and meant the weir had to be removed by hand, along with the removal of a series of dams on the Hiitolanjoki River in Finland,

where 34 miles (54km) of river has been opened up to salmon after being blocked for more than a century.

The EU’s proposed nature restoration law – the fate of which hangs in the balance after last-minute lobbying from member states – aims to reconnect 25,000km of fragmented river by 2030. But achieving this “will require a paradigm shift in river restoration”, according to a study in Nature that highlighted the “widespread impacts” caused by small barriers.

Although large dams get the most attention, the researchers found that nine in 10 European river barriers are less than 5 metres high.

Connecting rivers helps wildlife travel and allows migratory fish to reach breeding grounds. Removing dams also allows water levels to vary over the year, which can cause habitat changes that increase the diversity of plants and animals, said Pol Huguet, a city councillor in the Spanish town of Manresa, whichremoved a dam as part of a rewilding project.

anna_lillith OP ,
@anna_lillith@mas.to avatar

He said: “Thanks to this change, for the first time, we have seen some fish going upstream to this part of the river.”

Dam removals are not always popular. When Poland removed its first big dam in 2021, most people in the area objected despite risks to their safety due to poor construction, a study found in February.

As carbon pollution heats the planet, allowing air to hold more moisture, the risks of extreme rainfall collapsing ageing river barriers is rising.

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ldr.5053

anna_lillith OP ,
@anna_lillith@mas.to avatar

At least three river barriers collapsed last year due to heavy rain in Norway, Northern Ireland, and Slovenia, the report found. Last week, a dam burst in the Orsk region of Russia as heavy rains flooded the area and forced more than 100,000 people across Russia and Kazakhstan to flee.

Obsolete barriers that were built to cope with different climates harmed the river and increased nature loss, said Wanningen.

anna_lillith OP ,
@anna_lillith@mas.to avatar

“It’s time to rethink the way we manage our rivers by removing all obsolete barriers and letting as many rivers as possible flow freely. A river that does not flow freely is slowly dying.”

PROTECT WOLVES FROM TORTURE 🐺🌿

An opinion piece published yesterday in the #BillingsGazette explores #CodyRoberts ' #torture of a young female #wolf in Daniel, #Wyoming. By now, most of you have heard the news or seen the disturbing photos and videos. We remain disgusted by the #cruelty, as does our partner and op-ed author #JeffEwelt.

More on this case:

A #wolf was hunted, tortured and killed -- and almost all of it was #legal

This might be the most horrifying story I've read since #WolfHunting became legal again.

A #Wyoming #hunter recently ran down and crippled a wolf with his #snowmobile.

Then the hunter #taped the wolf's mouth shut, and forced her to limp around the local bar while he posed for #photos with the suffering animal.

PROTECT WOLVES 🐺🌿

A dangerous bill is up for vote tomorrow in the U.S. House of Representatives that is misleadingly titled the "Trust the Science Act" (H.R. 764). This bill endangers gray wolves by prematurely stripping their Endangered Species Act protection and blocking any legal recourse.

Here's why it matters:

• Gray wolves are NOT fully recovered.

• They currently occupy only a tiny portion of their historic range and need ongoing protection to thrive.

Keeping , and other cetaceans in is cruel. Depriving them of the vast open spaces and social bonds that they would normally have in the wild, and confining them to small, concrete to perform tricks for dead fish is highly unethical for these complex marine mammals. No matter how sophisticated the enclosure, no man made facility can ever hope to replicate the wild world of dolphins and whales.

Southern Resident Orcas Win Oregon Protection

Following a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and allies, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission just voted to protect Southern Resident orcas under the state's Endangered Species Act. Now state agencies will have to develop concrete actions addressing the major threats to orcas there, including ocean pollution.

ICYMI: Southern Resident orcas are a critically endangered killer whale population off the Pacific Northwest that's down to 74 individuals. These orcas are genetically unique, communicate in their own dialect, and eat mainly Chinook salmon. They're also protected by Washington state and, thanks to our work, the federal Endangered Species Act.

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE AMAZON BY ILLEGAL GOLD MINING

by Jena Webb | January 2024

Gold has been the motor of colonialism in Latin America for centuries. It began as outright theft by the first Spanish colonizers over 500 years ago, and now, when large companies operate mines, it is often dubbed “development.” In a global economy where a gram of gold is worth more than $60 USD, small-scale gold mines are proliferating.

ABOLISH SEISMIC BLASTING SPECIAL PROSPECTING AUTHORITY PERMITS (SPA)

A Special Prospecting Authority (SPA) is a specific type of permit that allows #companies to buy access to large areas of our #oceans to use #SeismicBlasting to search for #oil and #gas, and Carbon Capture and Storage locations below the ocean floor.

Seismic blasts are how the oil and gas industry surveys the ocean floor. Seismic vessels tow an array of airguns and audio receivers (hydrophones) behind them in the water.

1/5

anna_lillith OP ,
@anna_lillith@mas.to avatar

These powerful #airguns fire loud blasts of compressed air every 10 to 15 seconds, 24 hours a day. The sound waves produced penetrate deep into the #seabed and bounce back to the audio receivers. From the sound patterns detected, #companies can work out the most likely place to find oil and gas reserves under the ocean floor. The next step is exploratory #drilling.

These blasts are among the loudest human-made sounds in the #ocean, just short of those caused by explosive devices, and have a devastating effect on #MarineLife.

#SeismicBlasting has been connected to temporary and permanent #HearingLoss, #HabitatAbandonment, mating and feeding #disruption and possible #death in marine #mammals like #whales.

• The blasts lead to #scallop deaths by compromising their immune systems and have been found to irreversibly damage the organs of #lobsters.

• Tasmanian research found seismic blasting also triggers extensive death in , including , which are crucial foundations of , from more than a kilometre away.

There is a proposal for seismic blasting over 45,000 sq km of ocean between and by joint venture /-Schlumberger , which would see seismic blasting over commonwealth and feeding areas. 🐋

If approved, it will be the world’s largest 3D #SeismicBlasting project on record.

Companies’ applications for plans to conduct seismic blasting go to the regulator NOPSEMA for approval, and then to the administrator NOPTA to be granted an SPA permit.

This action is about safeguarding critical marine #habitats, preserving #biodiversity, and protecting the livelihoods of #communities that depend on healthy oceans.
