Gonna just stream of consciousness some stuff here:

Been thinking lately, especially as I have been self-hosting more, how much work is just managing data on disk.

Which disk?
Where does it live?
How does the data transit from here to there?
Why isn't the data moving properly?

I am not sure what this means, but it makes me feel like we are missing some important ideas around data management at personal scale.

🤷‍♂️ I could spend that two hours with my kids.

You aren't wrong, but as a community I think we should be listening carefully to the pain points and thinking about how we could make them better.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Nah, I like my community without the side of eternal suffering that so many religions like to threaten you with for varioua reasons.

I'd put my money on huge adoption of D&D in the utopian future before I put it on religion.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

What would you think of someone who goes door to door trying to convince you a blubbery clown rules the universe from planet zebulon?

Is that a normal person just doing normal person things?

For the non-religious, there is no difference between the person above and a relgious believer.

I think it's reasonable to ask why people still hold unfounded beliefs with the greater interconnectedness of the world making it pretty plain that not all these religions can be divinely inspired truth, so many of them are necessarily imaginary.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Maybe true, I don't pay much attention. All I know is most studies and censuses I have seen show religious affiliation falling fairly rapidly.

Airbnb undermined team that removed extremist users, whistleblower claims | CNN Business ( edition.cnn.com )

Jess Hernandez worked full-time as an investigations analyst for Airbnb’s dangerous organizations team from May 2022 to November 2023, researching extremist networks as part of the company’s work to keep dangerous individuals off the platform. But she says she was terminated in November 2023, shortly after her team was...

@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Where do you live that this is happening?

I ask because this hasn't been my experience ever in the US having lived in cities and states of various sizes.

I will believe there are problems some places in the US, but I would then ask: are you living in a similar area as you were in the EU in terms of population and income?

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

🤷‍♂️

I will admit to not having lived in the south. Maybe things are that bad down there, based on what you're saying.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

I mean, yeah, but I grew up in the northeast. You get a power cut from storms, ice, winds taking branches down, etc. You would usually lose power for less than a day. This maybe happened once every couple years?

This was 30+ years ago for me now, but that kind of minor outage is almost unavoidable.

I'm not sure why Atlanta would have a harder time than upstate ny, but I am willing to believe you. Its just not been my experience anywhere I have lived (which has mostly been what you describe: above ground lines).

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

I have never experienced that in the various places in the US I have lived.

I have lived in an old building where the voltage could and would sometimes drop too much for modern electronics to handle. A power conditioner or UPS resolved that if you run into that particular problem.

Can you elaborate a bit on your setup? As someone running Jellyfin, curious how you've configured everything.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Too cynical a take to be real.

The above happens sometimes, and is maybe more common among older entrenched politicians (that we have in spades right now with the aging out of one of the largest generations ever). But most of the time it's real people with real beliefs who want to change things. Governments are usually set up to change slowly, if at all, so often little seems to happen, but those gears do grind slowly based on how they're pushed.

So, your take is definitely a way to make it so the political class can continue to exploit people - you need more people upset and willing to change if you want to make a difference, not lots of powerless apathy.

I mean ... let's keep everything the same but slap way bigger engines on the planes, then because it's the "same airframe" there's no need for pilot retraining! Isn't that convenient, Southwest? You know, the airline that flies exclusively the 737 and didnt want to retrain any pilots. Everything is working out great, right?

Boeing has fallen from an engineering powerhouse into some lines on a wall street asshole's spreadsheet.

If you put a conservative on the stage, the audience of democrats will dislike what they're saying, most likely, and Biden will still look good.

If you put a progressive on the stage, the audience of democrats might very well be disappointed in Biden, not the situation you want at your convention.

Is your advice actually good for the party and the country? Probably. Would it happen? Most likely not.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, Americans. As much as i disagree with Republicans on things, they're still Americans.

Our educational system, our economic and our social systems have failed them and led them to unscientific contrary positions.

We need to find ways to bridge that gap and stop things like this without it being a political issue.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

If people understood germ theory, it wouldn't be an issue. Instead, we spend a lot of time in high school biology on hydras, for example. Hydras are cool, reproduction by budding is weird, but maybe that time would have been better spent on some history of plagues and their impact on society?

With better education half our population would not be so easily manipulated into bad choices.

andyburke ,

Perhaps we all need more classes on media, propaganda and civics?

Regardless, my point is this: the more we try to us/them our problems, the shittier our problems get.

Don't use those companies. Walk to a fucking store. Pay cash. Nothing is keeping us from showing capitalists what we want and what we will spend our money on.

Cancel your Prime, your Walmart sub, your Target rewards account. Find a non-chain store for things.

Show others around you how it's not that hard to cut unnecessary shit out of your life.

Start today, keep it small.

We love to complain as a species, don't we? Take that energy and change your habits and let others know. That's how you end up reading stories like "Companies respond to changing consumer preferences for more durable goods and more privacy."

I don't mean to target you, I am just as guilty of these things. Instead, this is a call to myself and others to complain less and change more.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

If you feel that way, I guess their propaganda dollars are working against you, at the least.

Stop thinking you're so outgunned.

I'm not trying to beat capitalism. I like regulated, competitive capitalism.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Because I think with proper regulation capitalism has ushered in the greatest improvements in quality of life compared to the other economic systems we have tried.

When you don't assume infinite growth and you instead optimize for maintaining a distribution of capital, I think it can be a good motivating system. We just need our baseline focused by human rights, not the money.

Money is what we decide it is, not the other way around. The people who are in charge right now want you to think money is in control.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

I believe it because countries with more capitalist tendencies tend to have higher standards of living than other countries.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Capitalism allowed the global north and "west" to outpace those other countries and exploit them in the first place. It wasn't moral, but capitalism is what positioned them in the first place.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Like I said, it wasn't moral. It is still a result of capitalism. Think we've probably finished here because you're not my teacher and you don't assign me reading.

When you stopped caring about staying in good shape?

I completely stopped caring about 2 years ago, I realized I was never going to do anything with my good look and that I will never get into a relationship in my life, so I just figured out "what's the point then, I'm already invisible to women?" And I don't care about my health tbh......

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

You got sold on the capitalist rat race, friend. It's not a competition. There's so much stuff you could do that you haven't even considered that's way better than the stuff you're thinking on. Stow away on a ship, climb a mountain, build a birdhouse, grow a garden, create a lascivious interpretive dance that you do in the town square until they throw you in the nuthouse now you need to charm the doctors to get out.

Think outside the box before you spend so much time thinking you're not good enough for some random criteria.

The moment enough of us decide this has to change, it will.

Relink productivity and wages!
90% tax rate on all the cash you earn in a year after the first $10M
Close corporate tax loopholes

We can solve this, we just need to decide.

Maybe a general strike is out and we should just start a quiet friday strike, and just start extending that back through the week. Productivity just keeps falling until the wealthy decide they don't want to suffer with the rest of us and take the fucking haircut.

A jury of 12 found him guilty. Not Democrats, not Biden. A jury of 12 American citizens said he is guilty.

He can still appeal and I hope he avails himself of every protection the law allows, as anyone being prosecuted should, but as of today, 12 American citizens found him guilty.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

Could I, an American citizen, not trust you to be impartial on a jury? Your red/blue dichotomy is bullshit. If I can't trust you to do your duty as a citizen, are you behaving like an American? Stop making it about sides. Make it about facts and specifics and individuals and holding everyone responsible for their own decisionmaking.

andyburke ,
@andyburke@fedia.io avatar

What about it? It has to happen sometime. Sentencing, as far as I know, often comes a while after a trial is decided, especially if it's a big trial with a lot of arguments.

You can't have it both ways: if they sentenced right now there would be complaints that there wasn't enough time and diligence given. If they wait, it gets close conventions, if they wait too long, that's not speedy due process.

Can we stop with the idea that it's all red vs. all blue conspiracy and realize that it's the real world where there is always some bullshit involved?

An estimated 85-percent of Neuralink’s brain-computer interface (BCI) implant threads connected to the first human patient’s motor cortex are now completely detached and his brain has shifted inside his skull up to three times what the company expected, volunteer Noland Arbaugh told The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

You don't address this claim from the article. You just say they've compensated with software. The fact still seems to be, at least to me based on what I am reading, that the wires have detached and shifted from their intended locations regardless of what effects that has had.
