It's weird to me (and I feel old for saying it) but the warnings were already there for the internet. The biggest thing taught about it that I learned in like, 2nd grade, was

  1. Not everything on the internet is true

And

  1. Anything you put on the internet is there forever.

It feels like there's a distinct lack of education on how to interact with the internet since I wanna say 2010-2015 ish. The warning labels were removed, and the internet has only gotten more insidious since.

It's crazy to me that fireworks can even be shipped to California, let alone actually used in-state, with how many wildfires they've caused. I genuinely would not trust people with them at this point

And i don't mean "mailed" or "trucked", I mean "turn that ship north and go the long way fuckers, not in this port" shipped.

Bogging down federal courts is a benefit to conservatives. It means their shitty laws can continue to take effect for longer while they wait for the court to get to them.

ID Verification Service for TikTok, Uber, X Exposed Driver Licenses ( www.404media.co )

A company that verifies the identities of TikTok, Uber, and X users, sometimes by processing photographs of their faces and pictures of their drivers’ licenses, exposed a set of administrative credentials online for more than a year potentially allowing hackers to access that sensitive data, according to screenshots and data...

It's probably maintenance techs, could be mercenaries though.

Born from the tragedy of gun violence, this program teaches children how to stop a wound from bleeding out | CNN ( www.cnn.com )

“Chances are, you’re never ever going to have to use this. If you do, it’s gonna be scary,” Kate Carleton told the 20 or so 8- and 9-year-olds. “But because we’ve taught you what to do, it makes it a little less scary.”...

Hillary Clinton is roughly the political equivalent of a grandparent who flunked out of high-school and never had a job giving the "firm handshake" advice about getting a job. It was cute in a naive sort of way the first couple times, now it just pisses you off.

Don't get me wrong, she would have absolutely been a competent president; but her campaign was so godawful, self-sabotaging, and unpopular that she actively encouraged trump to run and enabled him to win. Her decisions and opinions are an active detriment to the party she participates in, and she lacks the self awareness to recognize that.

A heat wave is bringing searing temperatures to New York and the I-95 corridor. Washington DC has hit 100 degrees ( www.cnn.com )

A dangerous heat wave is bringing sweltering temperatures to much of the US this weekend, including over parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, a tropical system could develop this weekend through the southwest Gulf of Mexico.

Southwest Ohio too. By like, 20 degrees fahrenheit more than Texas. It's been in the mid/upper 90s for about a week and it's not even in the typically hotter months (august/september) yet!!

Uhhh, isn't "the arts" (namely Disney and Universal) like, the main money maker of Florida? Not a lot of reasons to go there beyond that, beaches, and the fact that it doesn't snow.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Even that's fairly debatable. The usual case of such "massive libraries of content" is that most of it isn't even available to pay for; not provided by the content owner on any platform whatsoever (aka "vaulted") or the content owner does not make it available in the country of the person that wants to view it.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Less about right/wrong, more that there are no actual damages. If you aren't making something available for pay for and someone pirates it, you're making the exact same amount as you would if they hadn't: nothing.

It's people bitching about hypothetical money.

Disney told L.A. residents to move to Florida for a planned campus. They did, it was canceled and now they're suing ( www.latimes.com )

Walt Disney Co. continues to face fallout from its scuttled plans to move 2,000 California employees to a proposed Florida campus — a controversial decision the company reversed last year following the return of Chief Executive Bob Iger....

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Not borderline, it outright is self harm. Buying a home in Florida is idiotic due to climate change and insurance companies pulling out of the state, and there are travel advisories recommending to not go there under any circumstances (especially trans people, who can be arrested and fined for existing there).

Zorsith ,

US average PTO (paid time off, not vacation; that is for ANY time off while maintaining income. Sick? PTO.) is what, 2-3 weeks a year at best?

Plus it's incentivised to not use it, as some states require unused PTO be paid to the employee if they leave for another job (which is the only real way to get a raise or bonus); which is why some companies also switch to "unlimited time off", as you can't pay out infinity and you can just not approve the time off.

None of that even touches the OTHER problem:

Why Democrats think Biden’s problem is Biden ( www.politico.com )

Democrats keep doing surprisingly well in special elections. The party’s most vulnerable Senate incumbents are running ahead of their rivals in key battleground states. One of Democrats’ signature issues — reproductive rights — has repeatedly proved a winning message....

I think my parents would genuinely rather be taken out back and old yeller'd than pass on debt like that. They've put a lot of effort into paying off credit card debt and paying off their house, and making sure that their Will is in order when they do pass so that I am not dealing with problems like they have with their parents.
