The time genie will bring back one (1) extinct animal from any time in all of earth's history. The animal will be integrated into an ecosystem seamlessly with no major negative consequences. You get to pick the creature.

Do you feel obligated to pick something like a sauropod just so people can experience the awe?

Do you bring back something more recent to correct the crimes of mankind?

Or are you selfish and you ask for hell ants so you can finally see how their mandibles work?

WuMargaret ,

@futurebird Maybe an ivory-billed woodpecker.

These AI SEO spam operations have used lists of common searches to ensure that their pages come up first in searches in the “long fat tail” the kind of search where it used to be about 50/50 if you’d find a page addressing your needs. But, it used to be if you found something like “The top 15 smallest ants in the world” it wouldn’t be nonsense. It’d either exist and be the work of another person who cared OR you found nothing. Not so now! I can’t possibly over-stress how bad this is! 1/

@futurebird @mina Is the size variation among cast groups in a single species proportional (ish) among multiple species?

My husband speaks excellent English but it isn't his first language. In Montreal, people are used to different accents and both of us are generally understood, even with his accented English and my even more strongly accented French. But in less metropolitan cities (looking at you, Seattle), he'll say something, and people will stare at him blankly. Then I'll repeat the exact same words with my native US accent, and they'll understand. It's funny but it gets annoying when it keeps happening.

WuMargaret ,

@dillyd I am highly dubious of native English speakers who claim they cannot understand lightly accented English. I’ve too many experiences when the native speaker was commenting g on someone from India who had flawless grammar and spoke very clearly to me. Also my spouse has lightly accented English and I have had the same experience you describe.

I was wondering whether this was a fern or a moss, and it turns out to be delicate fern moss. On a pacific yew at the Sol Duc Falls trail, Olympic National Park, Washington, US.

WuMargaret ,

@dillyd It looks pretty. I like the way ferns smell. Does fern moss smell good?

Ain’t no bass-line like John Taylor Duran Duran bass-line. Holy fuck.

WuMargaret OP ,

@dillyd That's Depeche Mode, but I love that, too.

This is Tulip, the median carpenter ant worker. Today she enjoyed some wet cat food. I can’t seem to find Pepper, the ant with the green spot, I think she might have cleaned the paint off (she was very dusty) — stay tuned for more important Tulip updates. #tulip #ant #namedAnts

Tulip is about two years old. It's been nearly two years since I marked her. The queen of this colony is 4.

WuMargaret ,

@futurebird Tulip rules! Ants are so amazing. I want some aphid ranching ants.

@dillyd I want to pet this bearded cutie!

    @dillyd What is his name?

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @EdCates My in-laws name their dogs one of three things: maomao (fluffy), doudou (bean), or chouchou (stinky).

Another all too barren spring in NYC. There should be so many insects, so many ants, so many tiny creatures filling the parks, hitting the windshields of cars.

Remember when bugs used to hit the windshields of cars because the air was so full of life?

I guess most people think this is 'improvement' but they are wrong. There is a campaign to put the American bumblebee on the endangered species list!

We are living in an eerie lifeless netherworld and I don't know why more can't see it!

    WuMargaret ,

@futurebird I notice it where I live. I often have the awkward conversation with folks who remark that they’re happy about reduced insect presence. The strange thing to me is when birdwatchers express these sentiments. What do you think a lot of birds eat?

ugh i love akkoma too much to ever give it up tbh

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @alizasystem I’ll add as a regular user, the web app is cleaner. Also, like that you have a couple additional timelines. An instance only timeline and a timeline called bubble that is a bunch of instances your admin chooses to add. I am an admin on our instance, but I rarely do anything.

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @alizasystem Yeah. I use the Moana app which plays nice with Mastodon and Akkoma with only some small hiccups.

I try to ease my guilt about keeping feeder roaches (dubias) by making them fancy meals. Here we have carrot peel rosettes topped with banana and garnished with bee pollen and pumpkin seeds.

You may be the 5th generation to live in a box as ant food but at least someone was willing to cook for you. Poor little goobers.

    WuMargaret ,

@futurebird What species do you keep that eats roaches?

@EdCates @dillyd I love birds and bird watching, but I hate those MFs. I like Grackles, though. Also fuck all the Red-winged Blackbirds. They are so pretty but their call is too damn loud. They drown out the good sounding birds.
