The time genie will bring back one (1) extinct animal from any time in all of earth's history. The animal will be integrated into an ecosystem seamlessly with no major negative consequences. You get to pick the creature.

Do you feel obligated to pick something like a sauropod just so people can experience the awe?

Do you bring back something more recent to correct the crimes of mankind?

Or are you selfish and you ask for hell ants so you can finally see how their mandibles work?

WuMargaret ,

@futurebird Maybe an ivory-billed woodpecker.

These AI SEO spam operations have used lists of common searches to ensure that their pages come up first in searches in the “long fat tail” the kind of search where it used to be about 50/50 if you’d find a page addressing your needs. But, it used to be if you found something like “The top 15 smallest ants in the world” it wouldn’t be nonsense. It’d either exist and be the work of another person who cared OR you found nothing. Not so now! I can’t possibly over-stress how bad this is! 1/

WuMargaret ,

@futurebird @mina Is the size variation among cast groups in a single species proportional (ish) among multiple species?

Good morning, folks! My work week is starting, so I want to share these reminders with others.
We are more than what we produce.
Our value is independent of what we do to sustain ourselves financially.
Rest is a right, not a reward.

I wish for moments of joy, comfort, and fun for all of us this week. We’re in it together. Let’s have each other’s backs.

WuMargaret , to random

What are some cover versions of songs you like as much or better than the original?
Here are three from me:
I like Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia’s cover of “Positively 4th Street” better than Bob Dylan’s original.
I like the Pet Shop Boys’ cover of “Always on my Mind” just as much as Willie Nelson’s original.
I like the Lemonheads’ cover of “Mrs. Robinson” better than Simon & Garfunkel’s original.

Good morning folks! It’s Monday, and I am starting my work week, so I need to remind myself of a few things.
I have value independent of my work.
Rest is a right, not a reward.
I am more than what I produce.

Maybe you need these reminders, too, so that’s why I posted this. Whatever you do for work, you are worthy and enough. Hoping folks have a good week. Solidarity.

My husband speaks excellent English but it isn't his first language. In Montreal, people are used to different accents and both of us are generally understood, even with his accented English and my even more strongly accented French. But in less metropolitan cities (looking at you, Seattle), he'll say something, and people will stare at him blankly. Then I'll repeat the exact same words with my native US accent, and they'll understand. It's funny but it gets annoying when it keeps happening.

WuMargaret ,

@dillyd I am highly dubious of native English speakers who claim they cannot understand lightly accented English. I’ve too many experiences when the native speaker was commenting g on someone from India who had flawless grammar and spoke very clearly to me. Also my spouse has lightly accented English and I have had the same experience you describe.

I was wondering whether this was a fern or a moss, and it turns out to be delicate fern moss. On a pacific yew at the Sol Duc Falls trail, Olympic National Park, Washington, US.

WuMargaret ,

@dillyd It looks pretty. I like the way ferns smell. Does fern moss smell good?

Ain’t no bass-line like John Taylor Duran Duran bass-line. Holy fuck.

@dillyd That's Depeche Mode, but I love that, too.

I’ve lost pets before. It goes with the territory. However, I have never felt the grief has keenly as I am continuing to feel it for our boy, Slippers. I think maybe a lot of it is he was very clingy to me through both of my pregnancies. Also, I never had a pet who lived for 18 years either! Here is is this past Fall with a pumpkin. What a rando.

Hey folks! It’s another Monday morning, so that means I give myself the following reminders.

You are more than you produce.
Your worth is not in your job title or any other spect of your work.
You have value independent of work.
Rest is a right, not a reward.

Maybe some of you folks need those reminders, so I shared them here. Hope folks have a good week.

This is Tulip, the median carpenter ant worker. Today she enjoyed some wet cat food. I can’t seem to find Pepper, the ant with the green spot, I think she might have cleaned the paint off (she was very dusty) — stay tuned for more important Tulip updates. #tulip #ant #namedAnts

Tulip is about two years old. It's been nearly two years since I marked her. The queen of this colony is 4.

WuMargaret ,

@futurebird Tulip rules! Ants are so amazing. I want some aphid ranching ants.

Kind of got the Sunday night blues/dreads. Something keeps failing at work, and if it keeps failing I am kind of screwed. I’ll know for sure tomorrow. But I am proud of myself for leaving it alone over the weekend. Just gonna go slow and see what’s up tomorrow. Ok thanks for listening to my whine.

I am really wondering what can be done about our plastics problem. We need legislation banning or severely restricting the worst plastics. I do not know what else would work. Consumers cannot make choices they don’t have.

Shout out to anyone else who gets overstimulated by their young kids at times. I need some silence and stillness.

    WuMargaret ,

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @EdCates My in-laws name their dogs one of three things: maomao (fluffy), doudou (bean), or chouchou (stinky).

Another all too barren spring in NYC. There should be so many insects, so many ants, so many tiny creatures filling the parks, hitting the windshields of cars.

Remember when bugs used to hit the windshields of cars because the air was so full of life?

I guess most people think this is 'improvement' but they are wrong. There is a campaign to put the American bumblebee on the endangered species list!

We are living in an eerie lifeless netherworld and I don't know why more can't see it!

    WuMargaret ,

@futurebird I notice it where I live. I often have the awkward conversation with folks who remark that they’re happy about reduced insect presence. The strange thing to me is when birdwatchers express these sentiments. What do you think a lot of birds eat?

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @alizasystem I’ll add as a regular user, the web app is cleaner. Also, like that you have a couple additional timelines. An instance only timeline and a timeline called bubble that is a bunch of instances your admin chooses to add. I am an admin on our instance, but I rarely do anything.

    WuMargaret ,

@dillyd @alizasystem Yeah. I use the Moana app which plays nice with Mastodon and Akkoma with only some small hiccups.

I get so lonely when I am sick, and I feel useless, too. I am not sick often, or at least not to the point where I cannot do anything.

So sick today. Nothing serious. I finished something for work about 15 minutes ago and now I am just taking the day off. Glad I can. Feel so awful.

I try to ease my guilt about keeping feeder roaches (dubias) by making them fancy meals. Here we have carrot peel rosettes topped with banana and garnished with bee pollen and pumpkin seeds.

You may be the 5th generation to live in a box as ant food but at least someone was willing to cook for you. Poor little goobers.

    WuMargaret ,

@futurebird What species do you keep that eats roaches?

I saw about 30 American White Pelicans today! They’re not often found here. Just some migrants passing through. Very nice.

Well, I just signed up to volunteer for a practical support org. I haven’t been of service much lately, and that’s no good for my depression.

    WuMargaret OP ,

@dillyd Awe thank you. I’m not in recovery for anything, but I grew up around the recovery community and I find the 12 steps useful at times, especially being of service. That said, I think there’s a lot of BS in the 12 steps if you take them too seriously.

Tomorrow I get to do a reference call for a former direct report who I really liked a lot. She was a hard worker and very skilled.

    WuMargaret OP ,

@dillyd It is. I was managing a dev team working in ed tech and I had her leading our charge to improve accessibility of our tools.

Are there therapists who specialize in helping children who are stressed out giving tech support to their parents?

My mom is a mathematician. She can program w/ punch cards. But, she & Dad just don't keep up with tech anymore. Drives me nuts.

Gave my dad an iPhone for Christmas. They HATE it. Probably would hate any phone. Now they say it's recording their conversations.🙄

Dad holds down the buttons on the side when he picks it up. Activates the voice assistant... they think it's a hacker.

    WuMargaret ,

@futurebird Our local wellness center is always looking for ideas for classes, and I feel like some sort of elder tech class would be great.
