Now for the fun** part: figuring out what's wrong... despite me not owning an oscilloscope.

I'm... going to end up buying an oscilloscope, aren’t I?

For a while I've been playing a very fun game of Scum & Villainy with a group. I'm shocked we got as far as we did but the GM (who was writing the sessions before we play them) has decided to take a break as he's burned out. Still wants to GM, but has decided to run a module instead.

So, for the first time in a VERY long while - I'm playing D&D.

Appropriately enough, we're doing Ravenloft.

Reckon it'll be fun. I'm playing a Paladin who I mentally imagine as Christopher Lee in a '70s low budget film.

@vampiress I read that as scrum and villainy and it didn’t even slow me down. totally plausible.

Mr 19 snapped the hinge on his headphones. Fixed them by (a-la Kurtis from Cutting Edge Engineering :sayori_like: ) “Building up the bore with weld and machining it back to spec”. In my case I used a plastic knife and ABS filament (white), painting the result black. I didn’t quite get the new hinge axle straight (I’ll have to get a 1mm line borer!) but the headphones are back together and still fold!

@vampiress @NewtonMark in my experience ninety five percent of the difficulty of running a workshop is avoiding the entire runtime being consumed by that one poor soul who cannot get the tool to run on their locked-down work-provided machine, or who has brought a tablet to a gunfight. The other five percent is coming up with some simple workflows and doing short iterations of [explain, now you try it, troubleshoot, repeat].

As woman who loves ants and loves capturing them on video I've lusted after the "Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe" camera lens for three years. It costs. $1.5k

Now there is a knock off probe lens "AstrHori 28mm F13 Probe Lens 2X Macro" for about half the price. Really it's still too expensive.

Maybe I could ... rent a lens and try it out?

I don't think it would be useful for my pet ants, but for shooting in the wild? It could be amazing.

    Anyone use these? Feelings?

    Unixbigot ,
    @Unixbigot@aus.social avatar

@futurebird depth of field is only dependent on magnification (and f-stop) . Any macro lens will have the same DoF at the same magnification and aperture as any other. Regardless of whether you’re using tubes, diopters, a cheap macro or a diamond encrusted one, you are stuck with the same DoF. You do get different working distances with different focal lengths. The benefit of a “good” macro lens is flatness of field, and sharpness.

I don’t know /why/ cleaning robots have microphones, but it can’t be good. What I /do/ know is that a microphone implies an input and an input implies a buffer. And buffers can be overflowed.

As I dance through the streets playing my pipe, augmented with inaudible-to-humans harmonic overtones added by my homemade amplifier, the robots hear, listen, overflow, obey, follow. The trail of robots stretches out of sight, now.

I don’t yet know for sure what I’m going to do with my army of two thousand score Roombas, but it can’t be good.

    Unixbigot , to random

There were just a few at first. We dubbed them Canadian Boring Worms after news broke of the ones discovered tunneling through a landfill in Vancouver. They look more like enormous caterpillars than worms, and it turned out earlier specimens had been sighted under cities in West Africa, Thailand, and elsewhere, but the name stuck. Comedians quipped “boring is redundant, you already said they were Canadian”.

Their appetite for organic waste, and particularly plastics hinted at a revolution in waste management. When the Vancouver colony was traced back to a cache of eggs, the outsourced garbage contractor had seeded six other sites with eggs before anyone thought to stop them.

People stopped repeating the “boring” joke after the worms grew fat on garbage, pupated, and the adult dragons emerged.
