US discovering universal healthcare backwards.

UnfortunateShort ,

Might be about time to try blendOS I guess. All that's missing is Gentoo-like local compilation of packages to tick all the boxes of stuff Linux people get off on.

UnfortunateShort ,

The trick is not microwaving everything at 100% power, but for a longer time instead

Germany: Great!
Italy: Hurray!
France: Love!
Austria: 😐

UnfortunateShort ,

The US spends more on public education than multiple states where it's basically free for everyone. Now take a moment and appreciate how badly you are ripped off.

UnfortunateShort ,

Remember that blind test on LTT where no one, including an esporty player, could reliably differentiate between 120 und 240 Hz?

I know it's not exactly the most thorough experiment ever, but it's all I needed to know.

UnfortunateShort ,

I have yet to draw the comparison in person (only have a 165Hz), but I mean, every time you double the FPS, the benefit of doubling them again halves. Going from 120 to 240 to 480 Hz is going from 8 to 4 to 2 ms in terms of frametime.

A 4 ms difference in delay might be somewhat noticeable, if you have a very well running game and amazing reflexes. Anything beyond 240 is marketing bs / e-sport 'I need every ms I can get'.

UnfortunateShort ,

That are 40 TOPS no? I mean, why use standard nomenclature when you can have a big number I guess.

Any yeah, that's a lot of OPS for a '+'.

UnfortunateShort ,

Firefox enhanced tracking protection is pretty based here if you ask me

UnfortunateShort ,

I mean, there is OpenCL and AMD is actually compatible with lots of frameworks these days. It's not impossible, people just don't want to

UnfortunateShort ,

People say there is no god and there are no miracles, yet right there you see an individual that somehow lived to take this picture. Checkmate atheists

UnfortunateShort ,

Can't someone just take one for the team and assassinate him? Like, I think he deserves worse than a quick or even a slow death, but at this point it seems like a totally acceptable option.

The west defends Israel’s skies, not doing the same for Ukraine is a deadly mistake: If Europe doesn’t share its air defence systems now, Putin’s threat will only spread. ( www.theguardian.com )

The value of an effective air defence system and of unwavering international support was crystal clear the night of Iran’s massive attack on Israel: most Iranian missiles and drones were destroyed before they reached Israeli soil. The US, the UK and France, as well as Jordan, participated in Israel’s defence....

UnfortunateShort ,

I love how people are concerned about nukes. A lot of air-defense equipment has been delivered to Ukraine and for some time they were able to defend their skies quite well. There were/are much more direct problems than any potential escalation:

  1. Russia is firing much, much more (and prob. more lethal) stuff at Ukraine than all of Israels foes combined.

  2. Ukraine is a much, much bigger country than Israel, with many potential targets spread throughout. This massively complicates defense and logistics.

  3. Israel already had excellent air-defense when the conflict began, while Ukraine needed to arm up with whatever western nations feel they could spare.

  4. Many if not most of these nations weren't really prepared the sudden spike in anti-air demand, lacking the capabilities to replenish their equipment. At best they can provide munition, but getting new systems is a problem at this point. That's why for example a new Patriot production line is build in Germany.

There is room to expand warrantless surveillance? Colour me surprised.

There are two wolves inside you: One hates US politics, the other hates TikTok.

Arch is perfectly fine for gaming. I use EndeavourOS with KDE and Steam + Lutris (as Flatpaks) on top. Quite similar to the setup you would have on Steam OS, but I would highly recommend using btrfs as your file system and setting up snapshots.*

While I have had little to no problems so far, compatibility issues can still occur on rolling release distros, and it's extremely convenient to just be able to undo an update.

*This is quite simple btw., you just need to install snapper, snap-pac and btrfs-assistant. The latter serves as a GUI for btrfs setup in general. Create a config for your filesystem root ('/') under 'Snapper', and under 'Snapper Settings' enable 'Snapper cleanup'. You can also set the number of snapshots to retain there, but note that two will be created per system upgrade by snap-pac. I would suggest to also enable balances and scrubs for '/' and '/home' in the maintenance-tab.

UnfortunateShort ,

Ok, you cannot name murderers "shooters on scooters" without wanting to make people feel bad for laughing.

UnfortunateShort ,

Too bad that just in time for this fuckup, AMD stopped chasing halo SKUs again. Just comically bad timing.

UnfortunateShort ,

The problem is not finding a job, it's finding a job that pays well while not destroying your mental health, and ideally also feeling somewhat rewarding or otherwise meaningful.

You can earn money doing "something IT" no problem, but say you don't wanna do webdev, your options are easily cut in half. Don't wanna do ML/data science either? Half that again. And then you apply what I mentioned above und suddenly you look at a tiny market.

UnfortunateShort ,

It's quite good value, especially the 2-year plan, if you actually use all the stuff they offer. I got my family there, but they are still not to eager to integrate all there is into their routines.

UnfortunateShort ,

Everyone who does not want torx and nothing but torx has never screwed torx screws.

UnfortunateShort ,

It's not exactly the same tho. At least in Firefox there were/are still quite a few differences. Notably experimental privacy features and anti-fingerprinting measures are enabled in private windows

UnfortunateShort ,

I want to add that you can not only use USB keys as second factors, but also as a password replacement on Linux and Windows. It is extremely convenient to press a button instead of typing a 16 character pw.

New Israeli report alleging ‘systematic and intentional rape’ by Hamas relies on debunked Western media reports - The Grayzone ( thegrayzone.com )

The contents of the Israeli Association of Rape Crisis Center’s paper alleging “systematic” Hamas rape derive largely from discredited second-hand testimonies and debunked media reports. Among its most heavily cited sources is a dubious NY Times article that triggered a staff revolt at the paper.

UnfortunateShort ,

I wholeheartedly agree with you, thought the fact that they are not trustworthy is a different conversation than whether they are right on this one. They might be, it's just that you shouldn't take merely their word for it.

I think this is a good reminder that one should always check their sources tho

UnfortunateShort ,

Send a bomb threat from all major mail-providers any% speedrun anyone?

Seriously, as if no one ever send a threat from a throwaway Gmail account. The bullshit governments come up with to dismantle privacy...

UnfortunateShort ,

I recently did just that, even via VPN. They simply didn't ask me to. Maybe a regional thing?

UnfortunateShort ,

You will find services that provide you with a phone number that can be traced back to no one, if you dig a little... In some countries you can straight up just buy an eSIM with a false identity

Israel’s Ruthless Propaganda Campaign to Dehumanize Palestinians ( theintercept.com )

The Israeli government rapidly deployed a multipronged propaganda strategy to win unprecedented support from the U.S. and other Western governments for a sweeping war against the entire population of Gaza. To oppose Israel’s war is antisemitic; to question its assertions about the events of October 7 is akin to Holocaust...

UnfortunateShort ,

The current Israeli government is to blame for a significant increase in antisemitism across the globe and I hope many of its citizens recognise that and draw consequences. There is no alternative solution to two states. You don't own the people and you don't own the land.

Weird way to spell fish

UnfortunateShort ,

EndeavourOS:

  • Install portals along with Flatpak, depending on DE (+ GTK, always)
  • btrfs + assistant, snapper, snap-pac as default (ideally also bootable snapshots)
  • Provide not only printer, but also scanner support
  • Enable pstate driver for AMD CPUs by default
  • 1-click solution to enable recommended tweaks for gaming / interactive use
  • On KDE desktop:
    • Add dbus service to start Kwallet
    • Configure Kwallet to require no password, but confirmation for access
    • Ship with Discover
UnfortunateShort ,

That's why you need to rock and roll

(Arch btw.)

I have a Pixel and they have quite a bit of stuff where you need to opt in. Actually, surprisingly much stuff where they very explicitly state it's kept completely on-device, so I assume this is one of those. As other people pointed out, the GDPR fines would be waiting just around the corner.

I think I actually got the advanced suggestions already, but not the stuff regarding tone and context

    UnfortunateShort ,

"American" is hardly an ethnicity (except maybe if you are referring to native Americans of course), so this has nothing to do with racism. Secondly I assume the author of the comment is refering to the simple fact that the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have drastically different connotations in Europe and the US.

    UnfortunateShort ,

I have a wallet that's supposedly shielded and it turned out to be useless. Then I got a jammer card as a marketing gimmick. It doesn't just shield, it creates interferences. The stronger the EM field the better, to some degree. It actually works flawlessly. At least with my smartphone I can't read any NFC chip near that card.

    UnfortunateShort ,

Compared to Gitlab, it definitely is shit already. And that has nothing to do with the artificial restrictions. God I hate this website. I appreciate their service, but the UI is genuinely trash.

    UnfortunateShort ,

Isn't h265 proprietary? Maybe they just didn't want to pay license fees

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it's 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you're about to execute... And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

    UnfortunateShort ,

Accidentally deleted system Python, which on GNOME meant my DE was toast as well. Luckily very freshly set up, so no harm done.

Related note, add this in your shell profile:

    bash
    export PIP_REQUIRE_VIRTUALENV=true

    proper scripting language
    set PIP_REQUIRE_VIRTUALENV true

    UnfortunateShort ,

Why people no buy our GPU anymore?

Because I can get a whole fucking console for the price of a lower midrange GPU. My only hope is Intel's Battlemage at this point.

    UnfortunateShort ,

I have an all-AMD system, but they have become too expensive as well. Just Nvidia with a 20% discount, safe for the 7900 XTX which is completely out of question for me to begin with.

    UnfortunateShort ,

Afaik there are none, but I don't really get why I should use these services anyway. Pulling out my phone is only marginally faster than just using a card directly. They do improve security, kinda like a real life PayPal they prevent others from getting your card on file, but it's not worth the cost in privacy imo. That's part of the reason I use a credit card in the first place: Credit companies act as a proxy between you and your bank account and they offer some fraud protection.

    UnfortunateShort ,

Great, now we need to convince Linus that anti-cheat is definitely worth being implemented in Linux or what?

Might be a fun project tho... Actually, might become the anti-cheat to rule them all. Who likes cheaters anyway? 🤔

    UnfortunateShort ,

It's a guide, it's there to guide you, not to break your knees if you don't follow it all the way

Low battery life due to high power consumption on t490 thinkpad. (help needed)

So i have gotten a t490 just recently, and ive installed fedora on it, gnome power profiles daemon said it was "on my lap" and wouldn't let me change the power profiles even when on a desk. So i masked that, and installed auto-cpufreq, but the laptop still draws about 10W (according to powertop) when watching a youtube video,...

    UnfortunateShort ,

These probably contain everything you ever wanted to know about the topic:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_management
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_frequency_scaling

Be aware that some tools might be in conflict with each other. I recommend auto-cpufreq + thermald. You could add TLP to the mix, but then you need to configure it carefully to avoid conflicts.
