Yesterday, Rick Beato claimed that “music is getting worse”. I wonder what he and his legion of subscribers qualify as music. Is it merely what’s on the radio? What’s rising in the streaming charts? What’s getting press attention?

ALERT for indie makers and publishers: On July 1, USPS rates will increase from a little to a lot for packages. Make sure you update the fees on your websites and e-commerce platforms!

Media Mail is 50–60¢ more expensive (overall, not per pound) for starters. Ground Advantage jumps a couple bucks or more as part of the base price.

https://pe.usps.com/PriceChange/Index

Use Pirate Ship et al for discounted rates—going to USPS.com will get you a better rate than the PO counter, but 3rd parties are better yet.

People really see it as open season on D&D artists, huh?

I'm not here to defend WOTC, but I see artists and art directors pouring their hearts and souls into work, and then getting dunked on from every direction. "It's boring!" "It's actually AI!" "It doesn't look like a REAL (fill in the blank)!"

Not only does it show contempt for their work - in this environment, where creative people are being shut out of creative work - it kind of sends a message that art by real artists isn't appreciated.

If you're a fan, got a rec for ya:

Starry Eyed Visionaries is an alternate mystery cult that adds a whole new flavor of creepy to the campaign conspiracy your Murder Mavens will be solving.

Three pages, dripping with style, for only $4. Considering how much it'll supercharge your next campaign, it's a bargain.

I would love a #podcast that is like #dnd “DMs Office Hours” where the hosts have guests on who are just bringing interesting problem statements to the table and discussing solutions. Sometimes gaming questions just pop into my mind and I’d love to like call in to some experts to try to spitball helpful solutions.

Just read an infuriating conversation around Cara that really echoes all the other conversations around websites that drive me up a wall.

The tldr is, if you haven't been following, Cara is a relatively new site that aims to compete with deviantart/artstation portfolio sites. Their big thing is being AI free, and also including Glaze, which is a tool that purportedly corrupts your art in an unpercievable way to keep AI scrapers from using it.

However, someone recently did research and released a paper showing that not only does Glaze not really work, but tools like Glaze will probably never really work. Which I'm inclined to agree with honestly, without having even read it yet.

And for the record, I haven't read it yet, but neither have the people whose replies I'm going to talk about, so it doesn't matter for the sake of this conversation lmao, what matters is what everyone involved believes and how it informs their conversation.

So, this guy informs the Glaze team about his findings first, so they can do what they can with it, then publishes it. Then he comes to the Cara discord and shares it with the people there. Basically he says hey, I released this paper recently, here it is, my findings are that right now your Glaze-applied images are not safe from AI.

Now, presumably, because this audience feels so strongly about protecting their art, they should want this information right? Like, if you want your art to be safe from AI scrapers, and you thought this was doing that, and it isn't, you would probably want to know. Like, I have a fence for my dogs. If a neighbor saw my dog jump over the fence, then jump back before I noticed, I'd probably like to know that my fence isn't working, because I have the fence to keep the dogs in, that's the whole point of it.

But no, these people get ANGRY. Why are you spreading this negativity? Why are you attacking Glaze? We need Glaze to protect our art! Why are you tearing down this thing we need? It's vital to what we do that we post our art online, so we have to have Glaze! What if instead of trying to tear down Glaze you helped make better tools? Stop being so negative and just trying to hurt us! We need Glaze!"

And it's amazing because...the whole point is Glaze isn't working! You DO need something that protects your art, but the thing you're using isn't protecting your art! Whether or not someone tells you that your art is at risk doesn't even matter. Getting mad at someone for letting you know doesn't make it no longer a risk.

Imagine me telling my neighbor "Hey, are you just trying to hurt me? I need this fence to keep my dog in. I can't afford a taller fence. This is the fence I have. Don't tell me my dog can get out of it, I need this fence to work. My dog will get hit by a car if the fence doesn't work, so why don't you stop telling everyone the fence is too short? Why don't you build me a new fence instead of telling me my dog can get out? Don't you know I need this fence?
It's stressing me out thinking about my dog getting out, stop telling me about the problems! Stop spreading misinformation about my fence, I've never seen the dog escape it, so it's probably not even true, you just hate my fence!"

There are comments along the lines of "We get it, it doesn't work, but it's all we've got" also. Like...okay, then what you've got doesn't work! "Listen, you say my magic beans won't grow a beanstalk, but the magic beans are all I've got, I don't have any other way of getting a beanstalk". Okay well then...you aren't getting a beanstalk still. I don't know what to tell you.

The problem here is that these people are purportedly interested in keeping their art safe from AI. But in reality, they are more interested in FEELING safe from AI. Glaze made them feel like they could do anything about the nightmare AI scraping hellscape we live in, and telling them it won't made them feel insecure again. Which is a real problem we have to deal with! It's not that those feelings don't matter. But the guy trying to help you by letting you know that your art is not safe, even though you were led to believe it was, because he wants you to decide whether to upload it with that in mind and be aware of the risks instead of being told it's fine...he's not the one that made the hellscape we're all in. Him telling you your art isn't safe didn't make it unsafe. Glaze can come in and tell you it's totally safe and you can believe it. The other guy could lie to you and say just kidding it's totally safe now. None of this matters. No matter what you're told, it's not safe. That risk still exists whether you're happy about it or not.

    A funny anecdote

Me and some friends were playing Call of Cthulhu in a park.
We were under some roof as it's raining.
A warm but gray kind of day. Perfect to play COC in the deserted park.

Under that roof was a few tables, all empty except for one at the other end where a lonely teenage girl was sitting alone, wearing a bright t-shirt and holding some balloons A sign near her was promoting some activities for kids.

We smile at her, but she react in a kinda shy way so we didn't insist.

(6 men over 40 vs a lonely skinny teen girl could appears threatening so we just ignored her from now on)

    Yet she stayed for hours.

    A few month later.

My friend is at a game shop and he overheard a conversation between a bunch of teens

"I learned about this game by listening to some old men playing in a park. Now I DM my own Call of Cthulhu group", said one off the girls...

    How cool is that? 😂
