If you want to know why American politics are so f-ed up a good overview is The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry, by Ned and Constance Sublette.
Published in 2016, just as American white supremacy began its campaign to take control of the nation (again), the authors take a deep dive into factors such as monetary policy and how Andrew Jackson converted the nation to what amounted to a slave-based economy. America never got over slavery.

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

@mastodonmigration And Starlink isn't alone. The Chinese are building a similar system and there4's at least one other Starlink competitor. What will the sky be like when there are 10s or thousands of these? And BTW, they will need to be completely replaced every few years and the idea they will "fall" fro orbit cleanly is a fnatasy promoted by Elon the Bad Musk.

Missed? This was intentional. It's what happens when monopolies are allowed to regulate themselves.

When your owner is a mega billionaire who knows about nothing but making money and zero about actually making products, this kind of thing will happen.

"The reality is you can't build a $100b industry around techn that's kind of useful, mostly in mundane ways, and that boasts perhaps small increases in productivity if and only if the people who use it fully understand its limitations. You certainly can't justify the kind of exploitation, extraction, and environmental cost the industry has been mostly getting away with, in part because people have believed lofty promises of someday changing the world."
