I think these types of conversations are important for men and women alike. I’m a straight white man who is comfortable sharing his emotions with my partner, friends, and co workers. I have a bad habit of putting others and their needs before myself but I also make sure I take care of/pamper myself. When someone challenges me, especially to physical confrontation or some other potentially dangerous behavior, I can easily decline and look “weak”, I’ve never been in a fist fight in my life and I’m happy about that. In my mind and the way I was raised (in WV of all places) these are strong masculine traits: be open and honest with people around you, take care of others and yourself, and don’t do anything overly dangerous just to look tough or more important than you are.

The thing is, all of these a strong qualities that I want in the people I associate with, men and women. There are toxic behaviors on every part of the gender spectrum, the trick is recognizing them, not playing into them yourself, and helping family and friends through open dialogues not meant to shame or embarrass but real conversation.

My post is kind of rambling and I apologize for that but I wanted to put this out there because I saw a few comments about how some women and certain behaviors, like protecting a loved one from a mugger, can perpetuate toxicity. And to that I say, if there are people like that in your orbit, you either need to cut them out or if you love them and want them around, you need to have a conversation with them about their toxic behavior.

Nice! I’m a trim carpenter and I work in historic preservation. I’m a project manager now but I worked my way up from laborer.

Considering Neanderthals never lived in the US I don’t know what this nutball is on about.

Taco2112 ,

Most went north to Oregon originally then south to California. The Sierras are also a bitch, see the Donner party for more info.

You lefty’s are a contentious people.

The movies just came out. I’d like to see Fall Guy in a theater but I’m busy, even movies that come out on streaming still take me a few weeks if not months to get to. I got shit to do.

Hollywood really needs to stop declaring flops within the first few weeks, whether it’s streaming or films in theaters. I really wish things were allowed to grow organically. Video games are essentially in the same boat. Unlike my dad who stopped watching movies because of the “Hollywood liberals” I’ve stopped watching/buying any new movies/tv shows/video games because everyone is looking for an immediate smash hit. I give them at least a year now. If enough people are still talking about it, I might buy it.

I finally watched the first Dune last month, still on the fence about buying
Baldur’s Gate 3, I’ll probably get around to it eventually.

After wasting all that time typing this out, I realize that I don’t really care that much. The producers and powers that be don’t care about me so I’m not their target demographic. But, I take comfort in the fact that by the time I get to some new(to me) piece of media that it’ll be good because it stood the test of time(at least for a year or so).

At first, I kind of understood how it could be seen as unflattering but changed my opinion when I learned that her money came from mining, the painting is far too kind. As someone who grew up where mining was part of the culture, fuck her and every other mine owner.

To be fair, the protest against Charles I of England got fairly violent but that was 400 years ago.

I may be wrong but I believe dish soap is an alkaline/base and I know vinegar is acidic. If you mix the two, they are going to neutralize each other. I’d try just the vinegar and some hot water, that’s I use to clean water scale build ups.

Taco2112 ,

Wait, this is a joke? I’m pretty sure we talked about the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl at the annual “You didn’t vote Republican so you’re part of the Deep State” meeting back in August

Oh shit, was I supposed to keep my mouth shut?

Where are the good political songs? ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

I feel like there are lots of parallels between the eighties and now (recession/inflation, yuppies/inequality, skin-heads/fascists, hot-cold wars etc.) but there used to be protest music! Where is that stuff now? Music that's intelligent and outraged - like we should be!...

Taco2112 ,

If you like Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello did a solo project called The Nightwatchman that had a lot of great protest songs. I think it’s closer to 15 years old, so not the last 10.

The Soft Landing Is Global, but It’s Cushiest in America: Economies all over the world are lowering inflation while avoiding serious recession — but growth in the United States stands out ( www.nytimes.com )

The world is starting 2024 on an optimistic economic note, as inflation fades globally and growth remains more resilient than many forecasters had expected. Yet one country stands out for its surprising strength: the United States....

Really, it congress who should be trying to tackle the issues but they don’t want to make decisions so they’ve basically relinquished their powers to the president who can only govern by executive decision and the Supreme Court who were supposed to be the ones making decisions on unclear laws. At the end of the day, the President only has so much power and Congress is where people are failing to do their jobs.

Taco2112 ,

If a court enjoins you from doing something that needs doing, put on a silly hat and keep doing it, and tell the court "no, this is totally different, I'm doing it while wearing a silly hat, your order didn't mention anything about this silly hat." And when they enjoin your silly hat, get a silly wig and keep doing what needs doing.

Sounds like you’re okay with Fascism as long as the party you like is in power.

Taco2112 ,

Yes, the lesser of two evils, the thing that brought us to our current situation in the first place. How about no evils? How about we actually hold those we elect accountable rather than just letting them throw up their hands and hope the President does something.

I know you and I are only two people but shouldn’t we encourage dialogue and finding common ground? I know one party is out of their mind right now but taking their agency from them and saying you don’t know what to do because your stupid and I know better doesn’t help, it breeds more discontent.

Taco2112 ,

I think we agree on a lot but would rather see congress do their jobs and take responsibility than for them and the US public to have an over reliance on one person we hope will do the right thing.

Taco2112 ,

Not if you live in America, you can write in your vote for anyone you want. But it’s America so the two major parties each nominate one person and then most people choose between those two people and usually one becomes president. Donald Trump and Joe Biden are the current likely nominees from the two major parties. Some people do the write in thing and usually the person they write in is not elected president. It’s not a great system but that’s the one in America for the 2024 election.

Taco2112 ,

Exactly! Sorry I used the word likely instead of presumptive. As for the other parties, people can vote for their candidates too but like the write ins, they usually don’t win.

Taco2112 ,

So a loser wants to hire another loser after their last loser lost.

Taco2112 ,

Don’t forget to add that he’s a loser

Taco2112 ,

What a bunch of turds. They want to “secure the border” but don’t want immigration reform because immigration reform would allow in….immigrants. But, I’d bet money that most(all?) of the people in congress against immigration reform would happily use the Statue of Liberty in their ads.

Taco2112 ,

They want “boarder security” not “immigration reform”. They can campaign to their base on the first but not the second.

Taco2112 ,

Same thing happened with US military aid in the Middle East for the last 20 years. We haven’t changed anything so why would this time be different? guessing in another year, we’ll see the same headline about the aid we sent to Israel.
