It must be maintained, right? I can't imagine those flat stones all holding on through every flood for 600 years.

OhmsLawn ,

It's been mentioned before, but school busses are the ideal implementation of pure BEV. Their operation time to charge time allows them to be far more gentle on the batteries than mass transit, where you might only have a 4 to 6-hour non-revenue window to charge a whole fleet of busses that need to run for 18 hours at a time.

While the upfront and maintenance costs can be considerable, for mass transit, spending at least part of the route running and changing on trolley wire is a much more sustainable option.

OhmsLawn ,

Yes, every night AFAIK, but I sleep very deeply and seldom remember them beyond a matter of seconds. If I've had caffeine late, I do tend to remember them more.

Everyone got professional photos, except for Red Pine, who submitted a selfie while waiting in line at McDonald's.

How do you store your grounded coffee? ( slrpnk.net )

Hiya, just quickly wondering how people store their coffee? Mine is in a tin box I got second hand, cos I thought it looked nice. Any rules regarding storing grounded coffee? I don't store much at the time, it's just if I grind a little too much and what not. I'm assuming the general thumb rule for this is to store it in a...

Beans go in mason jars once I open a 1 Kg bag. Once it's ground, I'm drinking it.

What is something you can’t live without, technology wise that saves you time?

I have to say it’s my virtual assistant I’ve made. It saves me a lot of time with making reminders and such alarms for meetings or interviews, music etc.

OhmsLawn ,

Having just returned from a long carry-on trip, I concur.

I spent half April washing my socks and underwear in the shower. Even without washing my outer layers, it got really irksome. Thankfully, we had an apartment (with a washer) for the second half. That first load of laundry was magical.

English natively, enough Spanish to make friends, enough French to stay out of trouble, and enough Italian to get into trouble. I also have some transactional German (groceries, tickets, coffee, etc). I'm American.

It would take me a few months of daily practice to prepare and get comfortable with anything but Spanish. I haven't studied the other languages formally, only independently, for travel.

OhmsLawn ,

Yeah, I ate The Onion on this one. Opened the article trying to figure out what the hell they're doing now.

Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?

Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?

OhmsLawn ,

Yeah, in this case, both parties ate being a little gross.

OhmsLawn ,

Fat fingers. Also, for some reason, Android shrunk my keyboard, and I hadn't realized it. I just figured out how to put it back to normal.

I'll leave the typo. Wouldn't want to sabotage your comment lol.

OhmsLawn ,

I just spent almost two weeks on vacation in an apartment with an induction stove. I've had gas my whole life. I was impressed. It heated the pans faster and more evenly, the temperature was more tuneable and it was easy to clean.

While standard resistive stoves do get those rings, the inductive one almost certainly wouldn't, because the glass only gets heated by the pan, rather than the other way around.

The only difficulty was the Samsung UX. It was a bit of a chore to get the pan centered on the coil, and there was insufficient feedback when you got it right or wrong and if it wasn't in the right place it just wouldn't work. I got used to it, but I'd have liked some better markings, and an LED ring that would show when it was on. It also didn't automatically heat the pan quickly on startup. You had to set it to 9, then back off, otherwise it would heat the pan on a duty cycle.

If I were to upgrade my kitchen, I'd absolutely go with induction. However, even beyond my usual research, I'd make damn sure I got the best option on this. I love cooking too much to screw it up.

OhmsLawn ,

I remember waiting for the tubes to heat up.

OhmsLawn ,

I'm not a contractor.

I'd poke around for rot and mark the edges to make sure it isn't spreading. Maybe try to get up there and check after a storm.

It could absolutely be an old problem that stained the wood. I might make a 1-year calendar reminder if I didn't see anything after a rain.

OhmsLawn ,

I think the first time I saw him was when he covered as a guest for Tom?

OhmsLawn ,

That's a persistent itch.

Here are two channels I think Tom's viewers would appreciate.

Alexis Dahl makes interesting videos on history, science and life in Michigan.

The Tim Traveller makes ridiculous, yet strangely informative videos about locations all over Europe.

Both channels consistently provide answers to questions I hadn't thought to ask. Both do it with a genuine sense of wonder and a lot of heart.

OhmsLawn , (edited )

I was going to edit my other response but I'll just make a new one so OP sees it.

Calum Raasay , out of Scotland, makes some outstanding historo-scientific videos. He travels around quite a bit too.

Another that I haven't seen mentioned is Our Own Devices , he actually used to write for Simon Whistler. Most of his videos are shot in-studio, like Technology Connections and Joe Scott, but he also ventures out into the field for special projects. It's a similar mix to what you'd see on Forgotten Weapons.

OhmsLawn ,

That's a silly title.

The sun doesn't produce a lot of energy because it is hot. The sun produces energy because it is big. All functional experimental fusion reactors operate at much higher temperatures than the sun.

TIL about blindsight, a phenomenon by which visually blind people can apparently see or detect objects without using their visual cortex ( en.m.wikipedia.org )

It was a footnote in an article I read about a monkey using blindsight and that there had been several experiments with humans proving blindsight existed and that surprised me. As a footnote....

OhmsLawn ,

It's a very long Royal Institution video, but the first section covers this topic with footage of Helen the monkey. The whole video is fascinating.

OhmsLawn ,

This video uses blind sight in the Intro as a hook for an hour long lecture on sentience.

OhmsLawn ,

Is this a new NYT sharing policy?

I got past the paywall with the message Shared to you by a New York Times subscriber. First time I've seen that.

OhmsLawn ,

I appreciate it!

OhmsLawn ,

It looks far less habitable up close lol.

I shit-canned about 20 years with active alcoholism, but then made a fairly good showing in the following 15, I'd say I'm probably 10 years behind. Thankfully, my current job has a real pension, rather than a defined-contribution plan. I should be ok, assuming the city is.

OhmsLawn ,

Mid 40's by birth

OhmsLawn ,

I used to wrench on tugboats. I got fairly good with imperial over the course of 5 years (we didn't have enough metric parts for me to get used to them). US car mechanics really live in a mixed, but primarily metric world these days.

I can't speak for everyone, but toward the end of my time I began to think of the bolts with far more context than in the beginning. They became less similar, seeming more like individual components than different sizes of the same component.

It's really similar to learning anything. I just spent a few evenings making photos of the southern sky, something I've never really studied. At first, it all looked like random dots, but by the third night, I started seeing them a little differently. The shapes started to have their place.

I can only imagine what it must be like for physicists. When I see even the simplest modern equation, it's completely devoid of meaning. But, there are these people that can look at a whole chalkboard and pick out the one function that's out of place. It's almost a craft, beyond simply understanding the mathematics.

I feel relief after pulling off my toenails, whats wrong with me?

When I pull off my toenails I feel relief. It still hurts to do but afterwards I get a sense of overwhelming calm. Ignoring the pain aspect, It's kind of similar to the feeling of having a blocked nose become clear. Is this indicative of anything?/ does anyone else experience something similar?

OhmsLawn OP ,

I get that it's a hassle to find overhead space late, but I've never been in a situation where there wasn't anywhere at all to put my bag. At the very least, the flight crew can usually put it aside somewhere.

Granted, I haven't flown US domestic in years, so the nightmare might be worse than I imagine.

OhmsLawn OP ,

I was just mentioning this to my lady before boarding. I found that video absolutely fascinating.

OhmsLawn OP ,

I'm actually in that group 1 position right now, in a LatAm A320 premium economy seat. Besides the service upgrade and baggage allowance, it's just economy with the center seat reserved. Oh, and free messaging WiFi, too, which somehow includes Lemmy Sync.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Absolutely.

OhmsLawn OP ,

That's awful.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Yeah, no. I'll stand up right away, help people around me reach their luggage, along with getting ours down and prepared to roll. Nobody behind me on the plane is going to appreciate it I'm fumbling around with my bags while they're trying to get off.

OhmsLawn ,

I'm fine with an afternoon with nothing to do, but I'd really rather be at home. The day progresses slower without something to do. Four hours can feel like six if all I'm doing is checking my email every half hour. It feels like two hours when I'm in full flow mode.

OhmsLawn ,

Fast travel.

OhmsLawn ,

I feel like, unless they were monthly (or longer), I'd risk turning into a complete psychopath.

OhmsLawn ,

Somehow the idea of being sticky in space seems so much worse than being sticky on earth. Probably because you can't just rinse it off.

OhmsLawn ,

We had a brace of rented Nissan cargo vans at work, the small ones. Those were truly terrible. They had CVT transmissions that just would not hook up. I'd get to the top of an SF hill at a stop sign and just sit there with my foot planted, waiting.

We replaced them with Ford Transits. The CVT in that model is only slightly more usable, but we all still fight over who gets the older model, with the torque converter.

OhmsLawn ,

We are two people and run the dishwasher every 2-3 days, but it's really nice to go lazy and throw a pot or pan in there, along with a few plates. You're not gonna get away with that if you go with the little dishwasher.

Also, you're basically using the same amount of energy and water either way. Probably less for the larger one if you compare them full.

OhmsLawn ,

20 on my SFW account. I almost never browse by subscribed, though. Not enough content.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Safe travels!

OhmsLawn OP ,

Sorry about the disruption!

I used to live right across the street from a rowdy-ass bar. Ever since that time, I've slept with a loud air filter.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Ok this is now splitting my brain too many ways.

It isn't Sunday night there, is it? It's Monday morning at UTC-9. Shouldn't it be Monday afternoon there?

Oh. Wait. You have Easter Monday off, don't you? I think I get it.

Sorry. I've been up since 00:30.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Oh lawd. Yup. Blame the lack of sleep.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Not a whole lot. Made it through the dark hours without any trouble. Now we'll see how long I can zombie my way through my normal work hours 😵‍💫

OhmsLawn OP ,

I know. We actually don't (can't) force OT. Strictly voluntary, with a 12-hour maximum.

Unfortunately (on this topic) I'm the acting Supervisor, so it kinda sorta falls in my lap when everyone says no. I don't actually have to do it, but if I don't, then there would be fairly major reporting problems with the state, not to mention public safety issues, and that would be more trouble than adjusting my schedule every once in a while.

We're, like almost all city positions, critically understaffed. Hiring is slow, but hopefully we get a new crop of people to train in the next several months.

OhmsLawn OP ,

Considering the two other options, I really like it. I like going home in daylight during the winter, and I like sleeping at night.
