Matt ,

Google does not let you unlock the boot loader if the device is carrier locked. It needs to get paid off and unlocked before the boot loader can be unlocked to install custom roms.

Matt ,

I use Radicale for my calendars, reminders, and contacts precisely because of how minimal it is. It has been very reliable for me and is very easy to back up and restore since it is just files.

What email provider do you use for sign ups?

I used to use Protonmail, however the verification steps become tedious when creating unique emails for sign ups. I've switched to Tutanota despite it contravening their one account policy. What do you all use for one off emails (for sign ups etc )? Or do you prefer one of those 10 minute email sites?

Create a different alias for everything using a service like:

  • SimpleLogin
  • Addy (AnonAddy)
  • Firefox Relay
  • Apple Hide My Email

iOS Reminders app synced with Radicale server.

Libro.fm and Downpour both sell DRM-free audiobooks and offer an optional subscription credit model similar to Audible.

Matt ,

There is a setting to automatically check for updates. I would see if that is enabled.

VirtualBox still does not support Apple Silicon well. UTM is a great free and open source alternative.

Anyone know of a good wiki/knowledge base software that is portable?

I have a bookstack instance self-hosted and I quick like the program and workflow. I like having 'books' of information to separate/organize my information. It feels very much like folder heirarchy to me, and while that has its issues, I prefer it. Being able to add tags to pages helps alleviate some of those issues and helps...

Matt ,

DokuWiki. Everything is a text file that can just be copied to a web server. It doesn't even require a database. And since all the wiki pages are plaintext markdown files, they can still be easily accessed and read even when the server is down.

Telegram still requires a phone number to sign up, but they have had usernames that can be used to contact people without needing their phone number. Signal is only now finally rolling out usernames.

Which privacy services would you donate to?

Due to financial problems, throughout my privacy journey I have only used free tools to enhance my privacy. I was recently thinking about the question: If I had the money to give back to the services I've used, which ones would I donate to? Here is my personal list, which is still a WIP:...

Matt ,

Plus donations to Mozilla cannot even be used for Firefox development due to the structure of the foundation and corporation.

If you are using Linux, it does not get any simpler than Gnome Boxes. If you need more options, virt-manager is still fairly easy to use.

Matt ,

No, KDE does not have their own virtualization gui. Boxes can still be used on KDE as well though. If you really want nothing to do with Gnome, then virt-manager will be your best option.

Matt ,

Thunder is my favorite with Voyager a close second.

I wish Debian had a version with more recent software that is suitable for regular use. I know many people use Testing and Sid, but Testing often has delayed security updates and it’s not unusual for Sid to break. And both get weird around the freeze for the next release. It would be great if there was a version like Tumbleweed that was constantly rolling and received automated testing to prevent many of the problems Unstable experiences.

I currently use Tumbleweed on my computers and Debian on my servers, but I would love to use Debian on everything.

Roku supports Miracast, so it should work.

Matt ,

Firefox Sync is end-to-end encrypted and open source, so your data is secure.

I would look at the Radeon 6700 XT if you only plan on gaming. Despite being a last gen GPU, it outperforms the 4060 for around the same price. The 6700 XT is more comparable to the 4060 Ti. And it also includes Starfield if that is a game you are interested in. Here is a good ranking from Tom's Hardware showing how most GPUs compare to each other.
