I'm adding a queue for incoming activities in , and I have a concern. If an error occurs while processing an activity, should it retry?

@hrefna @thisismissem @hongminhee @helge does it not support a 201 response with a status url? That's the pattern used elsewhere for this

KevinMarks ,
@KevinMarks@xoxo.zone avatar

@hrefna @thisismissem @hongminhee @helge that does seem like an underspecified area. Webmention does define a 201 status response, for example.

Someone here once told me of how Microsoft had these customers who pay $$$ so a real driving force in the development of Excel are these horrific, unspeakable, monstrosities of spreadsheets critical to the operations of some very serious companies, serious bookkeeping, serious material operations. The elderich horror spreadsheets are decades old, have 100,000s of rows, spaghetti code formulas— Microsoft always checks updates will not harm them. IDK. if it was true: but it felt true.

KevinMarks ,
@KevinMarks@xoxo.zone avatar

@futurebird it was certainly true at Apple when I was there 25 years ago that we had hacks in the OS to keep old versions of apps working that had been passing bad parameters to system functions that had been previously ignored. One I remember was variable rate playback in QuickTime. You were supposed to pass a fixed point speed, but in early versions it only played at 1x speed for any +ve number.
There was a hack put in for specific apps that passed in 1 rather than 0x00010000 (1<<16)

After some conversations with friends NOT on the fediverse I've arrived at calling it "independent social media."

This is better than "open source" or other titles, it better conveys the central difference.

@futurebird this parallels us coming up with "indieweb" a while back

“Type 3 Error – from an old blog post about statistics. A “type 1” error is, in the textbooks, a false positive, while a “type 2” is a false negative. But the Type 3 error is, in my experience just as much of a problem – it refers to “a correct number which isn’t the one your boss wanted”.” https://backofmind.substack.com/p/lexicon

slams desk emphatically THANK YOU. This matches my exact experience with small talk and gives me a good analogy for it.

The one comment on cockatiels is just chef's kiss, because that is exactly how it works with birds (and in people, though we like to deny it).

It's not my favorite mode of interaction, but if you understand its purpose as a social ritual it seems a lot less meaningless.

The other thing: I like to stick it at the end of the conversation.

The cost of achieving a 90% clean grid using today’s technology is approximately zero.
And this excludes the external costs of fossil fuels: climate impacts, air pollution, geopolitical instability.

@rahmstorf this seems to ignore storage options, especially well understood ones like pumped hydropower. If you reframe the wind/solar excess as intermittent abundance, then using it for desalination and aquifer restoration fits in very well with dispatchable hydropower

@hrefna @erincandescent the feedparser sanitization rules are good practice https://feedparser.readthedocs.io/en/latest/html-sanitization.html but you can start simpler like mastodon does at the moment https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/23913
I'm not sure it is fully documented outside the code though https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/main/lib/sanitize_ext/sanitize_config.rb

If you prefer, you can use Mastodon entirely through the web without any app at all. Mastodon has an excellent web-based interface which tends to get the latest features first.

To access the web interface, just go to your server's website and log in with the same details that you use on the app. More info at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-log-in-through-the-website-help-my-password-doesnt-work

You can also install the website as a web app:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-apps-for-mastodon-and-the-fediverse

The website works on computers, phones and tablets.

KevinMarks ,
@KevinMarks@xoxo.zone avatar

@FediTips even better, go to https://phanpy.social/ and log into your mastodon account there to get a much more fluid web UI

    @vampiress @stilgherrian there was a super weird example of this in Silicon Valley - all these toyshops, kids bookshops and kid friendly fancy cafes opened up in Los Altos Hills.
    It turned out Google founder Sergey Brin had bought up the shops to make them what he wanted for his family.
