A friend worked in printer/plotter service for a long time. He picked up 3D printing, 3D design, and Photoshop stuff as a hobby. He made the designs for these lightsabers for himself, printed them, painted them - There's no metal in this picture.

He's at loose ends, mid-life, and wants to change careers. Big Time movie buff. I would love to get him in touch with some people in special effects/film and make magic happen. #movies #film #design #GetFediHired

INTRO —

Yesterday we learned how climate scientists feel about the looming existential threat of global climate change. They’re terrified. It’s obvious to them and it should be to us that the only rational option is to change course, quickly and decisively.

So, are we ready now to face some hard questions about what level of degrowth is actually necessary? To examine what that might look like, and how different it would be to live in a truly ecologically sustainable society?

Today I will devote an extended series of posts to the best description I’ve found yet about how severe our present situation is, and what we can and should do in the face of such daunting challenges. I’m going to excerpt heavily from a recent long article by Ted Trainer, an Australian academic, author, and advocate for degrowth. Trainer is a retired lecturer from the School of Social Work, University of New South Wales. He has written numerous books and articles on sustainability and is developing Pigface Point, an alternative lifestyle educational site near Sydney.

In the linked article, Trainer criticizes and debunks inadequate proposals such as the Green New Deal, along with the whole idea of ‘green growth’. He argues, however, that we must not only reject capitalism but also must recognize the inability of Marxism or even state-centered eco-socialism to make all the necessary changes that could avert societal collapse and global catastrophe.

This is a brief introduction. Eight separate posts will follow soon…

ARTICLE TITLE: A (Friendly) Critique of the Degrowth Movement

SUBTITLE: Sufficient degrowth cannot be achieved without enormous and radical transition to some kind of simpler way.

THEME: The recent spread of degrowth is encouraging — however, the movement is founded on a number of confusions and mistaken initiatives. This is understandable given its early stage, and can be regarded as a healthy exploring of possibilities. The literature welcomes pluralism, but we should try to find unifying directions.

I enjoyed the article. I am something like degrowth-curious. I think I am in that "Finally fed up with " grouping.

But reading the description of that society - It sounds very fragile. Very utopian.

Not the resource simplicity, I get that. The social structure. Voluntary bees, committees, no unemployment because all labor is utilized. It seems like something that doesn't outlive the dedication of the 1st generation? It requires ideological purity to maintain.

Good point.

If not then though, another generation. I just picture a hypothetical young me, all anti-authoritarian and angry at the system (but in this case I grew up in degrowth utopia), looking around at the gigantic structures and ruins of the past and asking all sorts of questions about why and how they did those things, and not being satisfied with the true but frustrating answers society is giving me. Youth is like that.

Curious how Mastodon reads compared to the YouGov poll of the US population below

How many Books did you read last year?

Need higher tiers. At least one a week.

That's novels though. I can't tear through non-fiction like that if I want to retain any of the information.

This whole thing... Say the entire AG team is one giant orgy... That lessens Trump's criminality, how?

Can we say non-sequitur, class? So frustrating.

"Elon Musk is such a man. Look at WHO WROTE the science fiction he likes and what those authors stood for.

It tells you something."

Wait, wait. You can't just wave at sci-fi and imply something sinister. I resemble that remark. Which authors? What does it tell us?

Fair enough. 🙂 Nothing in there I disagree with. That's pretty much my take on Heinlein. I wasn't considering the Nazis... You're right.

This is a subject of more than passing interest to me. I feel like I internalized the same ideas as them, but drew different conclusions. Perhaps I'm desperate to differentiate my self from... whatever Musk and his ilk are.

It's so nice that on you can question someone's statement and get a thoughtful answer that answers your question in response. Mmmm civil conversation.

I feel like this thing with him is moving in the right direction. That has nothing to do with us being safe though, because the GOP is solely composed of fascists.

It is the whole party, but I do I think Haley is less dangerous in absolute terms. I've considered whether she's more dangerous for being more rational and sane, but I don't think so. (That might apply to DeSantis.) Haley is wishy-washy and her fascist vein is shallow like most of her personality. I think she would moderate in office back to nearer a Bush style neocon. To the extent that can be called moderating... Jesus. Strange days.

I think it's partially the absence of the continuous automated commercial posts that make up the background 24/7 noise on other platforms. Here we get "work" posts more when people are actually working.
