Server as heating device - how do I do this?

So I have this silly idea/longterm project of wanting to run a server on renewables on my farm. And I would like to reuse the heat generated by the server, for example to heat a grow room, or simply my house. How much heat does a server produce, and where would you consider it best applied? Has anyone built such a thing?

Dukeofdummies ,

I can't remember what youtuber did this. But some guy tried to heat a pool this way with their server rack

Dukeofdummies ,

For me it's very much dependent on the topic at hand.

Coding, kbin, email, calendar, dark.

Still gotta work in light mode on word... just looks wrong otherwise.

This has always been my concern with the tradwife movement. I can certainly see why there would be appeal but you need to be very cautious of who you want to be a tradwife to. You create a lot of dependence on your partner, You sacrifice a lot of power, and once you start doing this it becomes increasingly difficult taking it back.

Even with the perfect partner to be a tradwife to. You don't remove the problems with dependence. You can argue that "well I have full faith my partner and I will stay together" but at any point it can all get taken away.

With two partners a single layoff sucks, but you can stay afloat much better than two layoffs. It's like a two engine and a single engine plane. A two engine has redundancy, it can limp. Single engine becomes a glider after failure.

Speaking of failure, doesn't matter how angelic your partner is, heart failure will kill them and wreck your life too. Then you have life insurance but no resume or job experience. Hope you saved.

It's genuinely kind of infuriating, because start mixing in handywork, house repair, landscaping, childcare, cooking, cleaning, organizing, with the recently added 3dprinting, searching online for 2nd hand goods, volunteering within your community, a LOT of value should be getting generated... but none of it gets recorded... or removes your dependency on your partner.

I’ve seen so many older couples where the woman was 100% dependent on the man. He never allowed her to manage finances, have access to the bank accounts, pay bills, etc. and then after 30-40 years he leaves or dies, and then she’s left without any life experience whatsoever and has no idea how to manage her own life.

That's the part that really kills it for me. Even if you have the absolute perfect couple, its got glaring flaws. It increases risk for higher... comfort? Because in high risk high reward, if it pays off you are more stable than you started. That doesn't happen with a tradwife couple. You constantly have a higher risk, but a nicer house, a warmer family, better food, more involved community. (Again, I'm assuming the absolute perfect couple. I'm not even considering the power dynamics.) Which... it's bizarre because that all should be worth it but... it topples so much easier. Even in the best case.

Like... this seems straight up like a flaw in society.

Has ethernet become illegitimate? A librarian flipped out after spotting me using ethernet

I plugged into ethernet (as wifi w/captive portal does not work for me). I think clearnet worked but I have no interest in that. Egress Tor traffic was blocked and so was VPN. I’m not interested in editing all my scripts and configs to use clearnet, so the library’s internet is useless to me (unless I bother to try a tor...

I'm not surprised. I know people who don't even know what an ethernet cable is. I've worked enough IT to realize that a tangled mess of 6 cables can be as horrifying as a Predator to people. It doesn't help that everything is slowly going to POE, POE+ and even ++ now so it's doubling as power as well. In analog video days I could look at the back of a random device and instantly figure out it's purpose. That's rapidly becoming a rarity. For a worrisome section of the population, plugging in an ethernet cable is the equivalent of building a table or performing a back flip.

And when it comes to hacking, good god nobody knows anything. I remember we had a dozen students in high school (around 2000ish?) get suspended for "hacking" and really it was just that a section of the student body found a network storage location without any password protection and were using it as a flash drive on school grounds. Literally they just suspended anybody who signed their name on the homework assignments stored there.

The real crime was that drive had lunch pins for all the accounts in plain text to run their system, without a password!

You know what really irks me though? Even if we didn't go green. Those 40,000 jobs are going to vanish. Coal doesn't grow like trees. That mine will empty one day and it's going to get shut down without warning, without any severance packages, the company is just going to run. There will even still be coal in the mine, it's just no longer cheap enough to mine it.

Historically, that's how it happens. Even in this day and age the moment a better mine opportunity is found, they're gone. They make the town dependent on them, they use the town in every way they can, they donate to the schools and municipal water supply, and then they vanish without warning leaving the town in the lurch. Happens with copper, happens with gas, happens with silver and it happens with coal.

At least the green movement will give you a date, a head start, and at least an iota of sympathy.

You know I was actually thinking this the other day, I know so much about Egyptian, Roman, civil war, and WWII history entirely from video games... Ceasar 3, Civilization, The Nile, are any of those games still being made? I feel like it's just civilization. Really developer's back then didn't even have a reason to throw in the history stuff but they did, for context and just a love for history.

Dukeofdummies ,

What about terrorist cells?

Dukeofdummies ,

You know, genuinely I have no idea. Especially because due south my GOD is Iowa completely NOT progressive in any way, shape, or form. If you ever drive through Iowa and start flicking through the radio stations it's terrifying. One radio station saying that "so and so democrat is the antichrist" is one too many but there were several.

Because my first thought would be urbanization, but really Wisconsin and Minnesota population distribution is not that different. It's also not bleed over from Canada because we're both about as connected as the other. Large forests and lakes between us. Prince was genuinely propping up the local music scene a TON before he died but... I don't think a single industry could be responsible for it. (it's a difference though) Then we even elected Jessie Ventura Governor, which... maybe scared other politicians to get in line? I genuinely don't know. I grew up in an incredibly conservative town in Minnesota but at the same time I had enough info to go "some of this sounds like utter bullshit". I remember listening to Joe Soucheray as a kid (even showed up on his radio broadcast at the fair once) it's not like conservatives aren't there, but not in the numbers.

Dukeofdummies ,

I hate the idea of hints. Because A. You then have to make the person your interested in make their own way towards you, and B. Then they have to notice it and then take a risk. I think it's FAR better, to give your crush an opening, serve them a line on a silver platter.

For example:
My wife was interested in me and she opened with:
"Am I too close?" To which I could've replied "nah you're good" or "yes, a bit" without any fuss. but, since I was also interested, I replied.
"Oh nonsense, if anything you're not close enough" which, can easily be dismissed as me being silly, but nope, she's interested. So she responds
'OH really? So how close can I get?"

Like, set up a romantic line. If there's a romantic line to be had. If they're interested, they'll take it.

Dukeofdummies ,

I respect that, but you can still make that known at the polls with write-in, with third party, or just scrawling "fuck all y'all" over the ballot.

Even if it doesn't lead to someone winning, every one of the above does get recorded. Every year mickey mouse gets a fraction of the vote, and lets be real, if Mickey ever got 5% of the vote, every candidate would be announcing their runs at Disney World with the hope they could attract just half that group.

If you do nothing at the polls, everyone will assume you don't care and don't care back.

If you do something at the polls, that doesn't help either party, then the two other parties might actually be incentivized to get your vote doing things you DO care about. You at least show up, so you are someone they should care about.

If for no other reason, it's a record of someone flipping the bird to everyone in power, a small act of defiance that can't make it back to you because voting is anonymous. If you're really that powerless the process should only take 5 minutes because the lines to the polls will be short.

vote vote vote. even if it's "none of the above"

Dukeofdummies ,

I sincerely doubt they give a shit about it.

I mean, they definitely won't give a shit if you don't vote. If anything it simplifies their math. If you don't show up if you're mad or sad you sure as hell won't show up if you're glad. So you can be safely ignored.

Biden already gives a shit about ~20% uncommitted in Minnesota, ~10% uncommitted in Michigan in the last primaries. nope, uncommitted didn't win but they're freaking out high ranking Democrats. There are more uncommitted than the percentage he won by in some of these states. They didn't win but now a LOT more politicians are struggling to dismiss Palestine. Hell Pelosi was out and out accusing protestors of being shills for China and Russia last week.

Democrats are currently avoiding college campuses for appearances because they realize how unpopular this war in Gaza is.

showing that there is a voting population that is unhappy carries weight, and it sticks around for years to come. It's a record just like the census.

Dukeofdummies ,

Perhaps the main use for technology is increasing the amount of inequality society can tolerate without collapse. I can’t fix inequality – that just seems to be what the humans want.

However by investing in surveillance technology, computer vision, and AI I could perhaps help our society to bear unbounded amounts of inequality indefinitely, without collapse. Social collapse is a less-than-zero-sum game, whereas an unequal society is still generally more-than-zero-sum. So I posit that the latter is objectively better.

... Are you suggesting that we increase inequality to make the world better? Like we need an overlord, be it robot or human, and the rest of the population needs to be placated, worked to the bone, and easily replaced?

I gotta assume I am just vastly misunderstanding something in this argument, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. Is it just sarcastic?

Dukeofdummies ,

I mean, the sad part is that there's really no other place guys and gals mix besides work or school. Once you graduate it's just work that remains. I don't even mean romantically either. I think it's hand in hand with the loneliness epidemic everyone keeps talking about. Where do you meet new people? Women can be so rare in some men's lives that to just say "ask if they like you" almost implies that they should ask every woman which both sides know is not what should be happening.

Ideally you would be mixing with strangers at a pub or something where if you put your foot in your mouth and somebody says no to friendship/partnership you both go your separate ways and no harm no foul, you probably won't even run into each other for days/weeks, but now everything is just shitty.

  • Clubs are too loud to talk at, so while you might be adjacent to a bunch of new people you won't be with any new people.
  • Bars work somewhat decent, people are friendly, the counter is where strangers mix. It does require you to imbibe a steady stream of booze though. You'll also have to jump around until you find one that you like. Same thing with smoking areas, smokers are crazy friendly, asking for a light is a great ice breaker. I actually used to carry a lighter just for this reason, and I never even smoked. Still a terrible habit to adopt to get friends though.
  • Any speed-friending or dating events/sites are just crawling with cringey people (I once went to one and had someone try to sell me a timeshare)
  • Everything has gone up in price, which sucks because now you go to an event and have a pressure to make it worth the money which just adds to the shittiness of the night.
  • The most reliable place people hang with strangers is the internet, but even then it's not a conversation. It's letters and pen pals.

Way too many people just have work left to meet people and that's not exactly a great place to pursue a relationship because careers cause way to many tripwires. A foot in the mouth brings in HR. Someone gets promoted and now there's a power dynamic. Yes it's inherently riskier to pursue people there. I think guys complain about it more just because they're more isolated and deal with it more.

I spent a lot of time when I graduated trying to find somewhere where I could find people and I finally landed on the convention scene and even met my wife there, but it took almost 5 years of leaving my house, trial and error, lots of events, and some truly boring expensive nights.

Dukeofdummies ,

so then, do they get along with other spiders as well? maybe we can finally farm some spider silk without the genetic splicing?

Dukeofdummies ,

That's... kinda a useless question.

Average 40 year old will have anywhere between 5 to 10 presidents in their lifetime. This is more of a history quiz than an opinion poll. How many presidents can you name? What did they all do?

Dukeofdummies ,

Honestly then Democrats win, because Trump is running. Even if he's not eligible he will whine and moan and a considerable segment will write him in or protest or not vote in protest.

Dukeofdummies ,

Not only that but on the technical side it is a TERRIBLE idea.

Obsolescence is affecting all technology faster and faster. Would you fuse an iphone to your body? In 8 months they're releasing a new one. Even if you decide to go open source, you can't connect it to an OS or a computer because then updates are required

If it has network capabilities it needs to be constantly updated for security, or else your prosthetic leg becomes part of a botnet launching DDOS attacks like those toothbrushes. Even worse, what if instead of a ransomware attack it's literally becomes a ransom. Want your bionic heart to keep beating? Gonna have to pay the hacker who cracked it.

It gets even worse if the company that builds it goes belly up. At least with a peg leg you can carve a new one, once software gets involved you lose all control unless you're building it yourself.

Just last year Poland literally had to hire hackers to hack their own train because train manufacturers artificially locked them down when they were repaired by a third party.

ownership of electronics is getting absolutely shady fast and you want to integrate them into your body??? You want to give it access to your brain??? Imagine if someone hacks your brain computer interface Elon Musk!

Dukeofdummies ,

look, I can understand the argument that you must vote for the most effective way to contain an evil. It's a good solid argument.

However it starts taking damage almost immediately when:

  • The plan to fight the evil is using the most disliked president in recent history to win a popularity contest.
  • They pre-emptively destroy any and all opportunities to find a better candidate to win the popularity contest against the evil.
  • They refuse to debate anybody just like the evil they want to defeat. Making it impossible to verify they're the one for the job.
  • They forcibly re-schedule the primary schedule to delay any signs that this plan might be a terrible idea.
  • Their age is seriously in question, their mental acuity is in question, and they also decide to dodge being in a completely unscripted environment for two hours while standing.

Certainly with all this you can at least understand why someone would rather vote third party, because this Biden option is not making me feel any safer.

At what point can we stop pointing the finger at the voters and start pointing at the guy they're "supposed to vote for"? Is there a point we can ever point that finger at Biden? Or is it like Trump, where we need to vote for him "even if he were to shoot someone in the street"?

Dukeofdummies ,

Secondly (more controversially), is a picture of a noose racist? I mean, it certainly has racist connotations and I personally wouldn’t have used it, but (bear with me) I’m not sure racist is the concrete conclusion. Lots of people have been hung throughout history, if you’re not viewing it through a racial lens then are you a racist or just very insensitive.

I see what you're saying... but it seems like a technicality that's not worth exploring here.

If instead it was a guillotine with a caption of "this year's detention activity"... it's really not any better. Like it's no longer racist but... now it's just purely about killing kids in a more equitable homicidal format. It's very dark humor in a very public place.

It's a lot of time and effort and argument to debate "yeah this was terrible but it might not have been racist". Does a definitive answer of "at least it wasn't racist" make this appreciably any better? Does it make them any more likely to get a teaching job after this?

It also doesn't change the core argument the teacher is making in the story. "You lumped me in with a bunch of racists because I was white. I took down the image because it was offensive. Obviously. Why would I leave it up if it was offensive?"

Dukeofdummies ,

Which, genuinely, if it was cheap I wouldn't care about. If it had no wifi or heated seats, no touchscreen or self driving. If it was just a cheapass vehicle for point a to point b and back, I would not mock it. It would have a place in the world and it would fulfill a purpose.

But currently it's place in the world is for the people who are unable to touch Elon Musk, but want to caress his face or be stepped on in a masochistic fashion by him. This truck is as close as they can get.
