I commissioned a drawing based on the “Sugar Defender” video from mansand on tumblr. It’s so good I’ll post it when I get home!

Pretty cool (and I enjoyed the video link!)… but the ants in the drawing seem quite … masculine. Is it just me? 🤷‍♂️

Weekend reading: I wrote about what “Project 2025” wants to do to America.

“Project 2025” is designed as a grand battle plan for the Right’s open war against multiracial pluralism – and it will be on the ballot in November.

A thread, based on this week’s piece:

“How seriously should we take “Project 2025”?“

Quite seriously. The reactionary right has been doing this for decades; they have lots of practice. They started small in a disorganized network of thousands of narcissistic bullies taking over churches and driving out moderate or liberal voices. They moved on town councils, and then whole christian denominations, state government, every institution they can gain a toehold with.

One of my VERY favorite interactions on Tw1tter was me describing a saddle pulmonary embolism where I almost died -> me refusing to be on site when I could virtually assess psych patients from home during March 2020 -> me suggesting workers must assert themselves for their safety and the safety of others.

This lead to a nurse jumpiing in my replies saying basically it was unfair that they had to expose themselves while I didnt...

This commonly used set of pictures is missing the final and most important panel: JUSTICE, where the completely unnecessary wall is removed and everyone can appreciate the game directly as they are.

    That's some platform, GOP Fascist Party: "NO SEX FOR PLEASURE!" Should garner a whole lotta votes.

    1/...

    Via Adam Jentleson:

    Highly influential heritage foundation, which would help staff & direct a future Trump admin, literally said that a key conserv policy goal is “ending recreational sex.” they said it, not me. IMO we should take them both seriously & literally

    Funny how “returning the consequentiality to sex” never seems to apply to the person with a penis.

    Last year, workers took 20 sick days as Germany's economy shrank by 0.3%. A study suggests with less sick leave, the economy would have grown by 0.5%.

    This is why the US wants to weaken COVID guidance despite no change in science. They want to risk worker health for the economy.

    All these folks who think you can negotiate with reality (who as children never learned the difference between needs and wants) think that reducing sick leave will magically mean less sickness 🙄

    What it will actually do is drive a bunch of people out of employment altogether, and make the rest sicker as the poorest people go to work sick anyway, spreading disease among co-workers and clientele.

    The books of the Bible(s) would be extremely challenging ancient texts in the best of circumstances— without complications, or such high stakes they would be very hard to read, even for serious scholars— So, this idea that you can just “go read the Bible” and find wisdom is frankly buck wild and dangerous. I was brought up constantly being told that I should “study the Bible” but of course I didn’t. I don’t think the people who tell you “read the Bible” really expect you to do it. 1/

    DavidM_yeg ,
    @DavidM_yeg@mstdn.ca avatar

    @futurebird @ianhecht

    99% of “read the Bible” comes from a Christian context, so I always ask, “where should I start?” From a Christian ‘follower of Jesus’ perspective, it should be something like, here’s a little book (supposedly) written down by Matthew, it’s a pretty good way to ‘meet’ Jesus.

    1/

    DavidM_yeg ,
    @DavidM_yeg@mstdn.ca avatar

    @ianhecht @futurebird

    I’ve read it, and the guy I met was mostly (along with some esoteric ‘I am’s) a wild radical who didn’t seem to care too much how ordinary people lived, but saved especially scathing criticisms for the rich, powerful, and self-righteous, and mostly was someone who particularly loved to tell stories; interesting, obscure, and challenging stories to make you rethink your place in the world.

    @DavidM_yeg@mstdn.ca avatar

    @ianhecht @futurebird

    What I especially love about these stories Jesus told was that the people around him, the ones with the most context, are often just as mystified as I am. The most common response from his disciples seems to have been variations in the theme of “huh?”, or “what the heck did that mean?”, and “please tell us straight up what you meant?”

    Can we please stop saying "enshitification"? It's profiteering. Stop being vague.

    DavidM_yeg ,
    @DavidM_yeg@mstdn.ca avatar

    @boldewyn @heydon

    The widening use of enshitification for anything shitty irks me too. It describes a very common and specific process through which markets are captured and then milked for every last dime of rent possible (especially in ‘tech’ related fields).
    The recent profiteering the grocery industry has made off pandemic disruptions is awful, but is not necessarily enshitification per se, although I would turn to @pluralistic for the final word.

    "Rhapsody in Blue," George Gershwin's iconic, soaring work, premiered on Feb. 12 1924 as part of "An Experiment in Modern Music," a concert that sought to "make a lady out of jazz." Ryan Raul Bañagale, Associate Professor and Chair of Music at Colorado College, writes for @conversation about its composition, enduring popularity, and whether it is an appropriation of Black music.

    Conversations about appropriation and authenticity are always fraught, conflicted, and controversial because of two factors:

    • it is an inherently human thing to share and adopt ideas, practices, arts, and technologies with and between peoples.

    • modern society has decided that only certain people get the privilege of profit from them, guarded and gated by the force of coercive capitalism.

    It’s interesting to read musicologists and the general public buy into the ‘tortured artist’ trope by disparaging the artistry of anything written quickly as ‘off the cuff’ or ‘cobbled together’ because the composer didn’t tear their hair out agonizing over every note.

    I’m making some “fractions sensitivity training” warm up questions for grade five and six. Any particularly silly or subtle suggestions would be a big help. These are too boring.

    A. How is 15min like $0.25?
    B. How are three cat paws like 45min?
    C. How is 12min like holding up one finger on one hand? .. or like $0.20?
    D. How is one ant leg like 10 min?
    F. How is holding up four fingers on one hand like 48min? … or like 8 dimes?

    Ideas?

    Donald Trump is looking for a new lawyer. And you might think "wow, came to his senses about Habba?"

    Don't think that's what it is. Habba tried to accuse the Judge of not disclosing a "mentor relationship" w/ the prosecutor. Very irregular and she quickly withdrew it to avoid being referred to the bar, probably.

    The filing is based on a NY Post article and was probably Trump's idea.

    He's not looking for a better lawyer. He wants one who is even worse!

    I hope he represents himself.

    Since he finds himself in court a lot lately, he will use every interaction to delegitimize the courts and justice system every chance he gets. If he can get a significant enough chunk of people to accept that the courts are not legitimate, he can accomplish a lot of really bad, scary mayhem.

    "Instead of Trump being able to turn the trial into a martyrdom opportunity, Carroll’s lawyers leaped on his behavior to strengthen their case against him. 'You saw how he has behaved through this trial,' advised Shawn Crowley. 'You heard him. You saw him stand up and walk out of this courtroom while Ms. Kaplan was speaking. Rules don’t apply to Donald Trump.'”

    This analysis is correct but misses the forest in examining this tree.

    “But for the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, it defies explanation.”

    Exactly.

    His engagement in these cases is doing an excellent job of demonstrating his contempt for the courts… that’s the point. It signals his followers to also have contempt for the courts. It tells them that law is not an impediment to action and it is an implicit promise that he will overturn the courts in their favour.
