What's growing on, Beehaw?

I've really been enjoying our haskaps (Lonicera caerulea) this week while waiting for the strawberries to ripen. The blackberries and raspberries have just been pollinated so there's still some time before those come into season, and the recent warm-but-not-too-warm weather has kicked our beans and tomatoes into gear....

CounselingTechie ,

I do not have pictures right now, but my plants are doing better. A few more of my peppers in my larger pots are beginning to fruit with more flowers, and a few tomatoes are beginning as well. I feared that my watermelons were dying, but they are back to life and flourishing right now.
With my beds themselves, two of my three tomatoes in the beds are doing alright with one doing better than the other, while the middle tomato plant is dead as dirt for some reason. Similarly my onion bed did not survive the storming we had a week or two ago. Sadly I am going to need to figure out the plan there.
My indoor tomatoes and indoor onions though are doing very well!

CounselingTechie ,

I am debating if I wanted to try a second time around with the onions, but maybe try more Egyptian Walking Onions instead of traditional white onions; however, I also have debated if I wanted to just switch to the next in the set for crop rotations. I have decided that next year I am going to attempt crop rotations with my four major sub-sections, being two sets of pots, and two raised beds.

CounselingTechie ,

Hmm, alright then. How best would you say to go about practicing?

DMs of the : Have you ever made a PC race illegal?

@dnd

I am feeling inspired by worldbuilding where all Dragonborn have a bounty on their heads, which was set by the current king. I would like to do something similar in mine with Orcs, but I'm not sure how to handle that lore-wise.

CounselingTechie ,

There are some campaigns where I will make it where a race would not exist because of lore or history reasons, such as Yuan-ti all being sealed and banished away for example.

CounselingTechie ,

Living in an agricultural community where several of the ranches and farms have artificial ponds, I almost wonder how well this would work there. Extra plants and harvest but also the shade created by the plants in theory may help combat some of the evaporation.

CounselingTechie ,

I see your invention and raise you one even older! A stick.

CounselingTechie ,

Hmm, alright then. I did not actually know that, thank you!

CounselingTechie ,

I was thinking the same thing, how easily the two units could work together.

CounselingTechie ,

You put it best, but I approve seeing more trains made.

CounselingTechie ,

I admit I only recently begun to learn about the concept of crop rotation, but it is one that I am attempting to incorporate into this year with my garden. Especially with me having 16 plants specifically in large pots instead of my raised beds, I have to be more aware of that practice.

CounselingTechie ,

I have been following them for a year or two now, and it is just amazing. I have thought about how hard or easy a system could be built to connect it with lorawan or similar.

CounselingTechie ,

X-49 was one of the most amazing concepts, since it did a good job of showing us a cybernoir story!

CounselingTechie ,

I love how almost 20 years later, it still is shown around as a warning to people.

CounselingTechie ,

Fully agree with this, having known both parents who homeschooled their children, and the children who were homeschooled. To put it bluntly, I have seen the trauma that many of the children have in how they are controlled and the emotional abuse that their homeschooling did to them because it was their parents controlling every aspect of their life. Now, with the parents, I also shall say the harsh fact that the majority of the parents I know that want to homeschool are the types who want to decide for themselves what their "little genius" will become, creating an entitled image of what they will make their children become, and will not permit anything that isn't their image. The child is not allowed to actually develop.

And I'll say that as a parent.

CounselingTechie ,

Thank you for sharing this. I admit, the nature of hopepunk was something I found recently through solarpunk and it kept going in my heart as an ideal to push for, especially in the work and life environment I am in.

CounselingTechie ,

Sadly accurate given that I live in the bit of purple in Colorado, and it has been 70s here, which is normal for our spring season.

CounselingTechie ,

That is even more worrying since that isn't normal for your spring season.

CounselingTechie ,

This is an interesting discussion point to look at, because for some people they seem to not understand that others, such as myself, genuinely love having many different styles and colors to choose from, as a way of self-expression.

I have clothing that is five to six years old, and also have clothing that is only a year or two, I will not deny. The clothes I had to get rid of where due to how much my body changed in the past five to six years, where I gave them to my local segunda where they give them or sell them for cheap. I got my use out of them. I even have a few outfits I've only worn so far once, because I've only had the one time so far, but when occasions arise I'll wear them again.

CounselingTechie ,

That is most interesting, you seem to have misunderstood where I specified that some of the clothing I've had for the past five to six years. Then again, it also appears you misunderstood where I specified that the clothing I've had to get rid of I give to a local segunda that primarily gives away the clothing to those who could use it, and would want it.

Did you perhaps, not read what I wrote, but merely judged me based off the initial sentence? If that is the truth, then it is alright, but please, do in the future state so first so I know what to expect of you.

I wish you well, MuchPineapples.

Getting the last set of pots this weekend, got large terracotta ones that I am going to be having ollas in with some container style tomatoes and peppers. Maximizing space without necessarily building more raised beds as I don't have the stuff for that, right now.
Waiting on one of the local stores to get plants started for selling so that I can transplant them into my garden beds.
Going to try okra this year! Determined to see how it works!

CounselingTechie ,

Honestly, one thing to look at would be using ollas, or terracotta pots that irrigate the plants for you. It is an easy way to once to twice a week water your plants. I use it almost exclusively in my gardens because my work schedule is too hectic sometimes for daily watering, plus it is much more effective in deep-root watering.

CounselingTechie ,

Yep! they are also good because they are a deep root watering too! I used the ollas last years for my dynamite peppers and banana peppers, and they were wonderful honestly.

CounselingTechie ,

Of course! If you have any questions feel free to post around here too! There are a few different places to get seeds or plants from that are container friendly, which can help for something easy to work with.

CounselingTechie ,

You put it best. Many want the cottage/cabin in the woods for the vacation space to post pictures on their instagram or such. There is little allure to the true nature of the lifestyle, the simple cruelty of it. The aesthetic is not the lifestyle, and I wish people would understand that.

CounselingTechie ,

I find myself more surprised at this not being as well known as you put it. The information was presented in a rational manner and I will be looking it over again in the near future.

My journey growing letteuce in my living room over the winter (see album in description)

I started in mid-November and have already had 5 harvests! The outrageous red and oak leaf letteuce have done the best. None of the black seeded Simpson survived. They're all leggy because of the distance to my grow lights but one of these days I'll get around to setting up a way to drop them down....

CounselingTechie ,

That is amazing!
I ended up this winter testing out growing lettuce but I started small, growing mini butterhead lettuce, and was pleased with the results. I am excited for the next winter, going to try to be brave and try some more traditional types.
What may be a method you think for helping the black seeded Simpson to grow better?

CounselingTechie ,

Maybe! I won't lie, I am not the most knowledgeable of lettuce but experimenting is always the best way to find a good method!
For myself, I am going to be yes, though outdoors instead of indoors.

CounselingTechie ,

I shall be the one to open the jar, for I am curious.

CounselingTechie ,

The best way I have learned to perceive it is that those of the "left" are best akin to a set of islands, loosely connected in that they are close enough to each other in range. Just like how different islands have different cultures, ecosystems, terrains, you find that the different groups of people of the "left" are that way, with their sole united fact being that they aren't the "other side"; however, when you ask where the line of the other side is, they all mark the line at a different point, some even going to far as to say those on the other lines are part of that "other side."

In my own experiences, I have seen this in discussions of equity, especially racial equity as a person who is mixed race, equity and rights for those who are LGBTQIA+ as a person who is part of the acronym, and the care for the environment.

I sadly have no true solution for this issue. People almost strive on the idea of disunity, being the sole group that has their perception of the proper answer, the single truth, and developing inane criteria to compare others to that aren't part of their same group, solely to justify hating them.

CounselingTechie ,

Your statement I honestly agree with. I deal with this at my work a lot with coworkers. There is a major push against self-accountability, and the push for self-growth. Some accept the perspective that they are the only ones with a correct answer, and that those who don't provide an echo chamber are wrong because of some inherent trait, examples being age or culture most commonly in my experiences.

I often wonder when fully it started. I see those in their 40s to 50s with it strongly affecting them, but just as strongly I see those in theirs 60s to 70s, and those in their early 20s and like me are in their early 30s. There seems to be no easy discernable pattern for finding a solution.

CounselingTechie ,

That is so amazing!!

I got my tomato seeds for my various types I am going to be growing, and then also am going to attempt growing okra! I also got my classic herbs, some peppers, some onions, and garlics too.

Starting indoors then will transfer as necessary.

CounselingTechie ,

Very nice with the ground cherries!

CounselingTechie ,

Make sure to have a good coop for the messenger pigeon

CounselingTechie ,

Still thinking about the sheer number of retro-computing people I know.

Also you say this about the potatoes, tomatoes, and chickens, but what about the other plants? Your lettuce is looking wilty.

CounselingTechie ,

I have tried to think about the feasibility in installing a solar water heater on a monolithic dome styled house.

CounselingTechie ,

I admittedly have been interested in the cargo bicycle/tricycle concept for an ambulance in the past, mostly from wondering what is the balance that they found works to mitigate risk of jostling patients in transit while maintaining a fast enough speed, especially when taking into account different road conditions, as could be common place in a rural community.

CounselingTechie ,

Very interesting, would you mind also linking this in !opencourselectures as to add it there?

CounselingTechie ,

I was thinking the same as you with the waste heat bit.

Radio pagers are superior to mobile phones from a permacomputing PoV

One or two AA or AAA batteries can power a 1980s pager for a whole year without recharging. This is because most pagers of that time period are one-way. Since it only listens, it avoids the energy cost of constantly transmitting to all towers in range. So it’s even better than a feature phone (dumb phone). The beneficial...

CounselingTechie ,

With the idea of pagers I had found myself thinking about LORA setups and the viability of using LORA for more use.
