I am always interested in what's part of someone's personal Star Wars canon - the works they personally consider a core playlist, which win the mental argument of what's "rightest" automatically in their head if there's a contradiction.

But!

I do not give the smallest shit about what anyone thinks the central "official canon" is; that is a deeply fucking boring way to try and power move the speaker's favourites to the top.

This makes fan discussions tricky.

Astropub ,
@Astropub@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I don’t know why people get so worked up about what is and isn’t canon. I would rather have a story that’s so good that I give zero fucks if it’s canon or not.

The freighter, chartered to breach the blockade and deliver vital resources, was reportedly intercepted in a whirlwind of chaos where many crew members were murdered in cold blood and the cargo was destroyed.

    I'm having a hard time making my current project, a weird sci-fantasy setting. It's in the same category as "Ultraviolet Grasslands", "The Electrum Archive", & "Vaults of Vaarn", but its most prominent features are an iridescent river & a titan's corpse. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue and doesn't abbreviate nearly as well as "UVG".

    I tried Opal River, but that's apparently a real thing already associated with kayaking.

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @BrianBinh you could also try using words like celestial and pair it with geographic elements. If the corpse is big enough it could be something like “the guide celestial/titan range”, I’m sure you’ll come up with something good.

    Hi TRPG braintrust!

    What are some interesting CC-BY or otherwise open TRPG games that my students could potentially adapt into video games?

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @SymbolicCity @ludopolitics I didn’t realise Vaults of Vaarn was CC, it’s excellent.

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @SymbolicCity @Astropub @ludopolitics I have the hardcover at home and can check, but once the zines are CC, you can’t take it back. Copyright would only apply to previously unpublished material.

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @SymbolicCity @Astropub @ludopolitics so it looks like the print version is “copyright Leo Hunt” and according to the website, the print edition collects zines 1-3 and includes different art. I’ve not gone through and compared them. Looks like your suggestion to work exclusively from the zines seems to be very much on point.

    @robindlaws so I was thinking about Mohilar and the Bogey Conundrum over coffee(no Roman Empire for me). I was wondering if you’ve written/discussed your thoughts as to leaving such a big in setting mystery up to the GM/table? You gotta admit it’s an interesting take for an investigation focused game. I’m curious about your thoughts on it.

    Astropub OP ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @robindlaws @Astropub I figured it must have come up, I’ll poke around. It’s an interesting world building choice. It’s often taken for granted in a lot of world building that you need to fill in all the corners, but RPGs are different from all other types of media with the emergent world building at the table.

    Gonna go fly away in about half an hour, but: A stray thought:

    1. D&D DMs are often the ones who care about the rules most.

    2. People who care about the rules a lot often want to tinker with them.

    3. It's never been easier to become an small-press/indie designer.

    4. There's apparently a DM shortage.

    5. Obviously, they're all running off to make their own things.

    Yeah? Yeah?! No. Probably not. But maybe?

    Astropub , (edited )
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen an option worth considering for 5. After thinking hard about the rules and tinkering, potential D&D DMs would rather play/run anything the fuck else. I mean maybe the problem isn’t a lack of DMs but that people just really don’t want to run D&D.

    An older post, copied over to the new blog:

    Huge chunks of early D&D were built using the wrong parts of the fiction they were sourced from.

    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen having read many of the sources, I’m always particularly surprised when someone uses terms like “Vancian” or refers to Tolkien when complaining about how D&D presents material. After some discussion it often turns out they’ve never actually read the source material (seriously Tolkien!?!?). I particularly take umbrage with the term Vancian, which does an absolute disservice to Vance’s work by comparing it to a truly lesser effectuation.

    Understand that even in most inexpensive housing markets housing assistance for the poor is closed to new applications and has a TEN YEAR waiting list. Plus multiyear waitlists for income based housing. Supply side, cities stop housing from being built.

    Homelessness is a manufactured crisis.

    @thoughtpunks I’ve been homeless twice in my life, both as a child and an adult. One of the core problems in western economies is the homeless industrial complex. Many businesses and charities have no interest in ending poverty or homelessness because they make so much money off of solving it. @SymbolicCity @pandatheist interesting. I’ve gotta admit that I’m getting fatigued with all the labels in ttrpg, it feels like it’s all getting a bit reductive. It’s nice to be able to find the style of game you like, but it also reduces your chances of exposing yourself to something new and different. I avoided OSR for years because I hate THAC0 and some AD&D2 design philosophy, I figured it was all just more of that. Knave is my favourite ruleset now, and I’m glad I gave it a shot.

    @thoughtpunks be a hard choice between or . I would happily play either, but 2300ad probably win just by being the first game I paid for with my own cash.

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @thoughtpunks With 2300AD it’s definitely the setting, I can’t think of any other games that capture a near future setting quite the same way. Lots of games skip the “boring” era of space exploration, but 2300 embraced it. Star Wars was just a cultural touchstone for my friends and I at that time. I’m not as big a Star Wars fan these days, but I’ve always loved the core rules.

    Brutalism gets a lot of hate, but I suspect it's mostly because the name sounds bad. It's named for its heavy use of unpainted materials like "béton brut" (French, "raw concrete"). It was a style built on post-WWII optimism about making a bigger better future, but everybody hears the name and thinks "Oh, grey dystopia!"

    If they had called it Nudist architecture, I bet it would be a lot more popular among folks who aren't architecture and design nerds.

    Astropub ,
    @Astropub@dice.camp avatar

    @BrianBinh well, the issues I have with brutalism are it’s association with the “state” which should always be smashed. I also find Neoclassical architecture vulgar for the same reason.
